When I Tank.

lol, nice thread. I agrre with the sentiment, I take it as a personal failure if any member of Spanky's team dies, but then again, you don't always get to hand-pick the muppets you team with (and I've made enough silly mistakes in my 2-year 'career' to be that muppet sometimes).

When I eventually convinced him to let me attack 1st, he ran in with me. I couldn't pull aggro from him fast enough as he was hitting with an AoE before I could TP behind the mob & Taunt.

[/ QUOTE ]Wouldn't it be more efficient to get IN the mob with your aggro aura on?

[/ QUOTE ]

For the most part it would - unless the enemies use a lot of cones. Standing in the middle of a mob of eg. Nemesis can get your squishies killed quite quickly, despite you having all the aggro. If you're on the far side of them all the cones are pointing away from your team.

great guide good idea to link to it. and good post about the tanking experience too.

I've been thinking about this recently. I (Mercury Angel Inv/EM/Energy Mastery) tend to jump/fly into mobs, lay down some agrro-smack then run on beyond the mob, turning around to draw them to me. This means I can quickly see who is agro'd to me, just hanging about or running back towards the rest of the team. I can then pick and choose with taunt or energy mastery ranged attacks to grab the attention of runners at a distance, and quickly run back to catch any leakers if needed.I had a conversation with a couple of emp defenders ages ago about how you feel responsible for keeping the team alive. The emp defenders generally got a sympathetic hearing from the group, and plenty of "good healing" but when I mentioned feeling the same sense of responsibility as a tank, I was pooh-poohed. I was tempted to stop tanking for them to prove my point, but that would have been petty...

refer to my mention on another thread about wanting to tank few, but hard enemies

The thing is, that's what you do in almost every major MMO. CoH is fairly unique in the amount of foes you can fight at once, and I (and I know many others do as well) really enjoy that aspect of it. Getting floored just about every time when you're against more than 3 foes is not fun.

Bit late replying to this but you're absolutely right.

There has to be a mix and match of us fighting "worthy" opponents and a whole slew of "cannon fodder" types to give us the illusion we're "super." Especially nowadays.

The game would either take an excessive amount of time to create with all the signature heroes required to achieve that or become a very short game.

Why do you say that?

Cannon fodder types are Id presume the minions that we have to fight on the way to the bosses, expendable people who are all of the same rank, with the same "Look at me I am in a gang!" dress code to slow us down, defeat us or whatever but in general the less important ranks and then we get to the boss types.

Bosses etc who maybe are worthy opponents depending on what character you happen to be playing. These worthy opponents tend to be named therefore called signature type characters who we wouldn't want to see all looking the same with a name change.

Each signature character is probably a days work or more and so in order to have the game the size it is, with the vast amount of foes to defeat, they aren't all that common. If there was more worthy opponents the game content would lack in other areas. But I am sure they can be made worthier if you either up your reputation, gimp your build (I pure build) and 8 man team it being on the more dangerous side of things whereby you always bare the biggest brunt you can get the challenges you need.

Each character has their strengths and weaknesses and basically the game is based around having each one atleast being able to defeat 3 super powered white coded minions who would simply be cannon fodder to some characters.

I actually learned most about tanking with my PB, probably because Dwarf is a tank taken right back to basics! I now apply these tactics to my actual (all be it low level) tank

[/ QUOTE ]

Interesting that, because i had a similar experience. It wasnt until i got dwarf on my PB that i realised how much more active i had to work to get aggro as a dwarf than as my tank and i realised what tanking was.
Before that I had just ran in and start hitting, and let the aggro come naturally..

*shudders.

Lets not compare Dwarf and tanker too closely as i may have a coronary.

I tend to find that the turning principle isnt always the best tactic. It has its many uses as do herding, Point blanking and taunt pulling. The key to being a good tank isnt just being able to take all the hits and bounce round like a man/woman posessed trying to keep all the aggro. Its also about keeping the team informed of what you are trying to achieve and where YOU NEED THEM to be. Its all well and good saying i like to bounce over their heads and taunt them away from the rest of the team, but how is that going to work when you cant see round that corner they are stood on, or just as you leap over, one of the blasters lets off a shot and all hell breaks loose.

So what is the most important part of baing a tank? is it remembering your basics?

Nope, any idiot can stand there and spam taunt till their fingers are sore, but whats the point in that when your suicidal scrapper mate has just legged it into the next mob without warning.

Is it knowing the best way to tank every different kind of enemy?

Nope. Ok great you know how to deal with those Nemesis ranges AoE's lovely, now watch the team empath stand right next to you and get bounced across the map.

Is it Being able to stand in the "Room of death" and take the whole room on without dying?

Nope. there is an aggro cap for a reason, and if you P**S if the whole room they arent just goin to take it out on you!

Its Communication, plain and simple. Not barking orders like "Herding to here!! dont attack until i say ready!"
its letting the whole team know what you intend to do in each situation, and checking that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet, ok that scrapper has run off to do his own thing, some would say let him die and he will learn, sorry but that attitude dont sit well with me, communicate with them, ask them what they are doing, explain that you are a team and will do things as such, if they dont like playing as a team, then there are plenty of contacts that they can get their own missions from and solo to their hearts content.

Digression over,

Point i am trying to make is that you can build the best tanker in the world and break all records on one team, but when you join a PuG, if nobody says, "ok follow the tankers lead" etc etc, how do you know that they are going to know what you are doing?

KNowing the basics is fine but its as much about sharing this knowledge with everyone else as it is actually doin it.
