Just created a fire/fire tank and ambled to lvl 6. Looking at the available powers, I see a lot of scondary ( 3 I think ) involve a fire sword. Now the problem is, a fire sword does not fit my character concept. So the question is, can I create a viable tank without taking any of the fireswords, or will my damage output be awful ?

Not even Fire Sword Circle? That is the best power from /Fire imo. With Combustion, Burn, Blazing Aura and Fire Sword Circle you'll do great AoE damage and things will drop quite fast. The challenge is standing on your feet long enough to do it.

the two best, imo, powers in /fire are FSC and GFS.

you'll still be able to tank without them.. cause tanking is more about taking damage than dealing it, but fire/fire uses killing the baddies as a big form of damage mitigation... so you'll certainly be making life a bit harder for yourself by dropping your highest damage ST and AoE.

personally, i'd keep FSC and just ignore the fact that its a fire sword... it all depends if you'd take fire ball from the epics, if you do that you could maybe use that to replace FSC.. (although fsc is far superior to combustion and fire ball)

Yes, it's doable, my initial build for John Wednesday about 30 months ago had no powers that involved drawing a sword - it didn't seem right for him at the time. However, at that time Burn was the best damage power in the game.

It's a hard call. I don't personally rate GFS much, but FS is good and FSC is great. If you were to live without, I'd suggest dropping into a pool for another Single-Target attack, and consider Breath of Fire (I appreciate many - most of whom have never tried this power - do not like it, but it's really not bad).

thanks for all the advice guys ( and gals ). Think I will give it a go, maybe copy myself onto test and do some alternate builds. If my 'concept' is to gimped, I may have to revise it.

GFS and FSC are infinitely better now that they've fixed the animations to remove the 2 second pause before you can use any other powers.

The biggest problem with BoF is its long activation time.

Everytime you use the fireswords you can always close your eyes XD.

Your damage output will be subpar, particularly against the combustion burn FSC combo. Bright side, team with as many controllers as you can get as then you could be spamming a sooner 6 slotted Burn for awesome damage and if your heavy on concept its all more slots for Pyre Mastery later.

Some people have different level up builds for speed and then change for conceptualness when more convenient later but at the end of the day concepts are more interesting and can make the game more challenging.

I've done this, also insisting on flying... you won't have problems tanking, a well slotted Combustion is what makes the difference there, but you will be subpar damage for a Fire/Fire tank.

@Unthing ... Mostly on Union.
