I prefer the normal render to the 'toon' one.
The toon shader seems to work well on the effects, but not on the character.
I think it works great on both..

Aah, that explains a lot.
Just drop the toon shader altogether then. It makes a terrible black outline. Your other pictures with the normal shader are much better, IMO.
But I do like toon-shaders and black outlines! 
Well this one I did directly in D|S, normally I prefer toonshading in C4D, looks even better (to me) but it takes more time to set up the shaders and may even take more time to render.
Well... I'm sorry, no offense meant, but I don't like them. I might find the second one acceptable, but not more.
