- CJ/SJ: are the enhances a typo? I would slot 1 Jump for each.

Yea my bad. My first thought was to pick up AS to go for Fly.
Thanks for all the feedback guys

Earth powers are accurate because they lower Defense for you as their secondary effect.
Quicksand debuffs Run Speed & Defense, it doesn't affect Recharge. It might be worth slotting for -Defense instead of -RunSpeed here (especially since you'll probably be stacking it with a Hold or Knockdown patch too so they'll be held or on their bums mostly). Combined with RI it could save you Accuracy slots elsewhere. Works well with the Vets reward powers (Sands of Mu & the Undead Slaying Axe) too.
Are you able to do enough damage? Thats the only concern I'd have with Earthies, and why I'd tend to take the single target immob with them, slotted with 1 accuracy & 3 damage. I'd maybe take AS & Fly too if you were still having soloing issues.

I'm probably inviting you to flame me, but shouldn't a controller focus on control and leave damage to the damage dealers?
I know there are many out there that mislike this purist approach (eg the recent similar thread on tanks) but in some cases there's just no point trying.
As a new player, I slotted much of my earth powers with damage, but soon realised there was not much point and the slots were far far better used to slot acc or duration. Now the only power I have slotted for damage is Stoney, whom I'm thinking about speccing out.

I wouldn't flame you even if I disagreed, I'd just disagree I see your point. And I agree 100% on a toon where you have a damage dealer or two to team with: Earth Control has insane amounts of control & combined with the debuffs of Storm they won't be moving or hitting or anything.
But those sessions where theres no teams going you don't want to be completely incapable of soloing either. Happens a fair bit to me. Especially in the late 20s / 30s on the European servers, it can be a bit of a solo slog sometimes.
If you're part of a regular team go the Control route certainly. But don't relay on being able to get PuGs at the drop of a hat and make the character unsoloable based on that, you may find yourself logging in for a few mins, unable to get a team and switching toons.
yup...earth really cant solo. well..i know someones gonna reply saying "i soloed mine to 50! it rox!" but being serious...it would take years. You CAN solo with ANY toon, granted. But i have a quality of life i'm just not willing to compromise, and soloing at the kind of pace my earth/emp could is pushing it too far. I cant imagine getting by using the ST immob, fossilise and something like air supe...perfectly doable, but i would switch toons as you say, i have other toons for soloing. This is somewhat seconday dependent i grant you, but still...Earth don't cut it for damage. I tried taking the ST immob and slotting it for damage, and taking stoney and slotting him likewise...and was bitterly dissappointed. I ended up geting rid of poor stoney altogether and slotting the immob for acc and range for pvp, i know my limitations

I have totally felt what you mean about being unable to solo. I can easily lock down large mobs all by myself, and keep them that way for quite a while... but once the control is in place it takes AGES to actually kill anything, even with containment.
I tend to build all my characters with teamplay in mind, I suppose if I wanted to solo I wouldn't be paying a sub to an MMO - though I can understand those that enjoy it. TPF stands for TeamPlayFirst. Fortunately, I team regularly with my gaming buddy who's a scrapper and she keeps the damage levels high.
By the way, this thread has started to make me paranoid. The last few nights I've played as Mr TPF, I've started to feel pretty weak in control. Volcanic Gases seem to be far far less effective than they used to be... I've seen arachnos mobs walk through them, I've had Freaks firing for some time before being held, and even my fossilise is now taking 3x spams to actually hold non-bosses. My slotting hasn't changed and I'm still on green enhancements... I hope this is just paranoia and bad luck rather than an I8 thing.
I think you'll find thats probably just i8 power-lag. nothing has been done to earth control...that we know of.

Which is what I thought ... (apart from the critical hit on holds).
something odd happened the other day actually. I've played ALOT of controllers but i was on my grav/rad and i scored no fewer than about 20 critical holds in less than an hour. This is odd because they happen so rarely i tend to forget it's even an inherant power. This has never happened before on one of my controllers, or at least not so that i noticed it.

afaik Controller hold crits are all set to 20%. So 20 in an hour is within reasonable probability. The only fix I've heard of was to Fossilize which was apparently never critting before I8.

Controllers get Criticals on their holds as well as Containment?? I never knew this, in fact I haven't even noticed it on either of my trollers (an ill/storm and earth/rad), how does it work?

heh, see it's so rare a lot of people don't even know about it...i didn't until my second controller, i NEVER noticed it on the way to 50 with Lady, though i'm sure it must have happened.
Basically controllers have a chance (20%) to land a critical hold thats double mag...so you'll notice on occassion you will hold a boss in one go rather than two. It's just like scrappers criticals really, although you wont notice it against anything but bosses (and Lts with mez res like fortunatas).

That's almost right . It's actually a 20% chance of adding a Mag 1 hold which lasts 75% of the original one. Mag 3 Hold + Mag 1 = Mag 4 which is why you can sometimes hold a boss in one shot. But it doesn't actually double the Mag of the hold (like Domination does).
