I think hate lists are uncommon in this game, unless everyone has one with me on it and no one's told me

They weren't being sarcastic The term "hate list" doesn't really come up in conversation on these forums or in the game.
In fact - this is the first I've heard of them.
In my opinion, it's a mark of how generally friendly CoH/V is that we dont actually have hate lists.
The closest we get is players that you've had to put on /ignore or /gignore - for whatever reason.
Personally it takes severe abuse for me to put any player on ignore and have only had to do it once in a year of playing.

Wow - I've been playing MMORPGs since 1998 (Asheron's Call to Anarchy Online to Star Wars Galaxies to City of Heroes to WOW (briefly) to Matrix Online (briefly) and back to COH!) and I don't even know what a Hate List is
Ah right, OK, maybe the term isn't as widespread as I thought :-P
but yes, I meant the list the NPC has to determine who it will attack next.

SWG/EQ2/WoW refugee is looking for a casual friendly SG that will accept some lowbie characters. (currently lvl-14 MA/SR scrapper, a lvl-13 Eng/Eng blaster and a lvl-4 dark/dark defender)
I have prior mmorpg experience (see above) so I am aware of the basics (aggro range, hate lists, dealing with runners, not running away from healers/tanks etc etc) but am not so familiar with behaviour of all MOBs in the game so will happily follow advice from more experienced spandex wearers.
Play times vary (shift worker) and I have a generally casual approach to game play, however if I am able to assist with TF's I will.
