Fortitude - and interesting ways to slot it...

Right a quick question!

How is Fortitude best slotted?

I'm introducing a friend to CoH and he wants to tank so I thought to myself that it would be the perfect opportunity to do that 'pure empath' build I've been wanting to do since I got the game.

The character, Metys, is a Magic Defender: Empathy/Rad Blast

I intend to take only Proton Volley on the secondary because, well, I want a total empath build. However, when slotting Fortitude I'm a little stumped. I plan to take Leadership, Fitness and Teleport.

So far I've come up with this rough slotting of it on the Sherksilver Hero Planner:

Fortitude: Defence Buff x 2 + To Hit Buff x 2

I didn't think it needed the recharge and as for range, I intend to slap it on my friend and any others who require it before they enter battle.

For comparison, said friend is playing a Magic Tanker (Fire/Energy) - hence choosing a secondary that can reduce a target's defence when it hits and obviously he'll be needing a bit of extra fortification - especially before her gets his anti-mez

Thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Usual slotting with ED is 2 recharge, 2 Def and 2 to-hit I think.

It does not need ToHit for Pve, and not really for PvP either. Slot it with 3 rech 3 defbuff, or 3 rech 2 defbuff 1 tohit.

If you are taking Leadership don't bother slotting Fortitude for to hit buffs for PvE. In fact I wouldn't bother even if I did take leadership.

A 3 slotted tactics gives a 19.5% to hit buff.
A 0 slotted fortitude gives a 25% to hit buff.
Both together are a 44.5% to hit buff.

Assuming that the person you are fortituding has 1 ACC slotted that means both will cap anything with a to hit chance of 27 or more. That means he/she would be hitting anything less than +7s 95% of the time. Are you planning to fight +7s?
Unslotted Fortitude alone will cap anything less than a +5.

Slotting recharge on fortitude is far more important than defence or to hit. As it means you can make more people amazingly good. However if you are duoing mainly I would slot probably defence first.

@Unthing ... Mostly on Union.

Depends how many people on the team you want to keep Fort'ed. I've seen a few Empaths whine about getting Speed Boosts because it messes up their "Fort Cycle" . I'm guessing with Recharge slotted in it, they can keep X amount of team-mates perma-Fort'ed.

Not that I know a lot, I'm very much on the receiving end of things regarding Empathy.

It's 3 people with perma fortitude if you slot 3 recharges

recharge, recharge, recharge, recharge and more recharge, hasten, and beg for boosts.

Personally I slot 2 def, 2 to hit and 2 rech, but it's mostly set that way for the crazy people who think that enemies don't come in colours other than purple.

It depends on your normal team makeup, if you normally have a fairly wide-spread team the tohits are actually useful, if it's a lot of squishies who insist on taking aggro, the def is useful, otherwise recharge all the way.

Specific to you Rose, if you're ever going to team with Grav or Doc, lots of def and tohit - and be ready on the healing. Especially if Doc starts muttering about wormholes...

The best way to slot it is 3x tohit buff/defence buff/recharge HOs, but I only know of a few people with enough of those enhancements to actually do it.

Since I doubt you have the HOs, go with 3x recharge 3x defence. The base tohit puts you to the cap for anything up to about +7 enemies.

The fort cycle is quite important though but its upto the empath to keep track. If its not ready to rebuff the tank through not keeping track, a tank can have instant death the moment it runs out.

In teams you could play to get away with only ever having to fort the tank and even /sr scrappers could only need to play using their aoe def and mezz protection so all that recharge need never be used. Rather than try to perma fort 3 ppl late game its just the tank or anyone that suddenly ends up in over their head.

My problem with sb is i overshoot my run and find either a hole to fall down, edge to fall off or make the perception range of another group. Shame we cant have a walk mode.

Yup, I'd go 3x Recharge and 3x Defence.

Although I have it slotted: 3x Recharge/ 3x ToHit/ 3x Defence/3x Range.

Hami 'O's are lovely in Fort, i dont have the 'dream' fort set-up by far, but the Hami 'O' i have in Fort in one of the slots gives;

*To-hit: +41.8
*Def: +20.0
*End: 33.3

Interesting to hear how others have slotted it.

Thank you all for your positive and helpful responses. I've always been a bit 'scared' of playing an empath - similarly tanking scares me because I've teamed with excellent tanks and empath defenders/controllers before - so even though I've got more experience at playing than my friend, I feel like a total amateur atm.

*toddles off to the Hero Builder to make some adjustments!*

Meh, you learn by doing. However, imho, you've taken the most important step to being a great player in any AT; you've come to the forums.

80% of what I know I learned here.
The other 20% I just make up
