Wouldn't say its the highest populated, but certainly more vocal on the forums (well, one or two group are

Scrapper is a good choice for a first character, I've found it the easiest to solo if you can't get a team, but the high damage means you'll always be an asset if you enjoy teaming.
I'd recommend /Regen as your secondary power set. Its very powerful, and has several powers that run automatically to speed up your health and endurance bars.

Apart from that both Defiant and Union have players who are helpful and considerate. Seeing as you will have 8 character slots in both Union and Defiant why not "suck it and see" - If you want to go hard on the roleplay front then Union is the server for you - specifically 9pm "under Galaxy Girls skirt" is the place to hang out (Galaxy City big statue of Galaxy Girl).
If you want to focus on PvP then Defiants Paragon Defenders are he people to hook up with. If your borderline insane try Sanity Inc on Defiant. There's a bunch of right weirdos on Defiant called Honourable United... not sure if there any good though
First off, posting the same thread in different forums and posting in Caps are both against the board rules.
Back on topic. There's very little difference between the servers. Populations are almost identical, though Union seems a little bit busier on the CoV side than Defiant.
Captain Cathode has also given the impression that Defiant has the more active PvP community which is not true, again they're pretty much even. As a matter of fact, I've been teaming with several Defiant PvP guys who've commented on how busy Sirens is on Union.
The only real difference is that Union is the 'unofficial' RP server. That said, they acount for a small section of the population so don't expect everyone you team with to really think they are 'Zorg, the sun swallowing alien' as I can count on one hand the amount of times I've had an 'in character' moment since CoH was launched. RP is there but only if you want it, it's not forced on anyone.

As most people have pointed out the server populations are very much even so you won't be at a disadvantage by choosing either.
The union forum does have more posts simple becuase of 2 threads, the Galaxy Girl thread (which is for the RP'ers) and a thread called Rangers AWAY! which is basically were a section of the union community, which we call ourselves the 1AT cos its a selection of SGs where all members are 1 archetype only, used to post. We now have our own forums (see sig) though so many of the members no longer visit here that often :P
Anyway hope you enjoy your time here. If you choose union then perhaps we will meet sometime

I have to disagree here i'm afraid, I would strongly suggest experiencing The Hollows as you will learn a lot about the teaming side of the game and is actually quite fun. I do advise to beware The Gulch though.... Can be deadly!

Good Morning.
As I type my game is patching for the first time and as with any MMO i have several choices to make. Hopefully with the advice in this post the ability to choose my server will be a painless one. Looking at the board post it seems that Union is the highest populated server. Is this correct? and as a result there are many experienced players maybe willing to help an experienced MMO but new COH player?.. Any advice on server, character build etc. would be appreicated. (Im leaning towards Union and Scrapper at this time). Thanks in advance.
