Hello all, sorry for this noobie post.

Would dominators be effective and fun to play in PvP? I have read up a lot (obviously not enough!) but cannot decide on their PvP'ability.

The only stiplulation are that I would say is that I will probably concentrate on ranged, rather than melee attacks (yeah im a chicken). I will also play a lot by myself and so would need to be fairly self suporting adn fun to play the character on my own.

Mainly i wanted advice on the main primary and secondary skills to use (and avoid) for PvP

Any other on particularly useful (or unuseful) sub skills also appreciated,

REALLY apreciate any help at all

Thanks

Not a silly (or n00b) question at all - at least on union there seems to be little action in the PvP zones and there are hardly any posts about builds in the dominator forum. I'll suggest looking at the US boards (if you haven't already) for more info. Even over there, the jury is still out. I'd say Dominators could be useful in PvP, but it depends on the type - 1 vs 1 arena match, Pentad, PvP zone ...

I'd tend to either ice or energy as a secondary, for power boost - dominator holds appear to be 65% (figure from a post in the us dominator boards, unconfirmed) of the duration of controllers, so you need the extra oomph - I wouldn't count on getting Domination up too often - your bar resets at defeat.

As for a solo PvP type, I'd suggest pretty much any AT other than Dominator. You could do it (I plan to), but you would be remarkably squishy compared to many other PvP builds. Stalker strikes me as much more PvP oriented, but I haven't got one past 6 yet...

US forum seems to suggest Mind/energy, Ice/Ice, Grav/Energy (opinion is split on this one). /PSI comes in for a slating. Other sets have their own fans.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. I have a mind/energy build posted somewhere, but it isn't PvP specific...

Much as I love my Plant dominator I'm not sold on her PvP ability. I agree with Light they might be a lil squishy for solo. What is you power choice btw?
As for other AT's;
Corruptors for ranged AT and perhaps stalker with certian additional power choices for a melee. I'm told MM's are mince but dunno.
In saying that in a team a dominator certianly has a place, some controllers are doing legitametly well on the hero side. And with the addition of domination in a straight team fight or base raid dominators could hold their own.
I play both plant and mind dominators and I'm dfinding PvE soloing not to bad.

As we're still the first wave we need to rely on experiment and our US collegues for info.Give it a go(if u But good luck whatever you settle on.

Not sure if that was directed at me or not - my PvP dominator is Mind/Energy, with everything from mind except total domination and only the melee attacks/snipe/obligatory first blast from energy +Powerboost. Fitness (hurdle/health/stamina), leaping (acrobatics/cj/sj) and leadership (for +perception) and you're out of choices.

Don't see this build racking up a lot of PvP kills until 35, at which point it turns into a bit of a one trick pony when it comes to kills. I do see the massive and varied number of status effects (I took energy over ice for disorient) enabling a team I am on to rack up a fairly impressive number.

One word of warning is to keep an eye out for players carrying a small truckload of break-frees... they could be very lethal for a solo dominator :s

That's one reason for going mind...

I play a Mind/Psy Dominator and I love it to bits.
I've done a few PVP's, but all in all it just seems that I just about never hit in a PvP game, although I do fine in the PvE.
In the event of someone asking, I'm slotted 2 DMG, 2ACC, 2HOLD/SLP

Admittably it was a few levels lower than I am now that I went PvP'in and I really do want to go test it out now.
Maybe I can get a few holds off now.

I love PvP, it's fun.

Unfortunately my comp fan sounds like a car engine so I've unplugged my PC until I can find & fix the problem or have someone do it.

I just hope that when I relog on and go PvP'in this time around I can give a few people major holding problems

Dominators later on will be a key element in PvP battles due to their nature, their seconday godlike effects and the status protection drops they offer. I suggest u try the Mind set from primay and Psychic from secondary for a variety of reasons. Despite not its good soloability compared to other sets in a team Mind/Psi is godlike. I pvp a lot with my mind psi dominator and is already being feared by many who have seen him in action. Consider that my final build is still not there.

Powers that u must have is the stamina pool for the dominator and hasten to keep the attack cycles going.

I have ice/ice, mind psi and plant thorn since last posting on this thread i've been looking into each a lil more. Ta for answering, the power set question for you.

Its all down to how you play i suppose, for secondery and which to choose its a case of do i want to be safe in the back spamming holds or live dangerously with a lil melee(ish) powers - me? I was kamakaze as Raven for healiong and am no dofferent as Dom or Corr lol.

Dominators will deffo rock within a team, the more the merrier tbph. With the mind psi set you have the advantage that few heroes if any have protection to them, the only prob i found was with confuse and trying to stop the team going for the ones who are killing for you till it wears off - tho some heroes do notice and dont play ball

I'm finding thorns are working great (toxic damage and can bring down flyers)and plant has a good range of powers from holds to confuses and sleeps. Its a matter of choosing well, hasten would be handy and maybe leadership, dunno about travel powers tho, i have fly on one and SJ on another - I prefer SJ but thats just me.

Its great to see controllers and now dominators are getting the appreciation they deserve and praise that might have been lacking without PvP lol
