Speed or Jump?

Spiders can move both very fast and some species can jump as well as move very fast. I've only used fly and super jump as travel powers, I'm inclined to get jump, however both offer what seem to be handy combat powers that could be used regardless with a crab.

So opinions and thoughts on the matter: For a crab spider which seems more feasible?

Well, that depends on what species you're being inspired by to create your spider.

I plan on making a crab spider inspired by Pterinochilus murinus, which is a species of tarantula that has a nasty bite (it won't kill you, but you will be hating life for a few days afterward), a bad attitude and moves incredibly fast. My travel power options are Super Speed or Teleport.

The teleport option is because the P. murinus is capable of moving faster than the human eye can follow, giving the impression that it teleported from one spot to another.

Another tarantula species I was considering was Heterascodra maculata which is similar in temperament to P. murinus and can also jump. The travel power options there would be SS or SJ, possibly both.

If you've never used SJ for travel before I would sugest trying it out on your spider. It's my favorite travel power and the prerequisite for it is useful for any character.

I have used SJ, I haven't used speed. I'm very familiar with SJ on my main. I didn't get Flight til after 40, so most of his travel time was with SJ. I didn't use any of the melee powers though, I just used Combat Jumping and Super Jump. I'm not thinking of any specifics, since I don't know a lot about spiders. I know you have a ton of knowledge in that regard. My color scheme is more geared around a brown recluse, but I don't think they have any jump abilities.

I am leaning toward Jump, I just wanted to see what other people thought between the two.

I would take SJ.

If for no other reason than the fact that redside is a pain to navigate with SS.

I know very little about the brown recluse other than you probably want to avoid being bitten by one. I actually don't know that much about spiders. I know a lot about tarantulas, which technically are not true spiders, though they are related more closely to them than any other arachnid. I won't go into detail on the differences, but scientifically tarantulas and spiders are not the same thing.

I remember you and i discussing your knowledge on tarantulas when I was talking about making a Crab Spider. Anytime you want to discuss it send me a PM I'd love to know more and your insights.

Since I'm already biased towards SJ, and you pretty much have the same opinion on it that i do, SJ it is

Thanks.

I find no problems, 99% of my redside toons have superspeed. You can always buy a jetpack for the times when up is your only option.

At what level does superspeed become fast enough that mobs ignore you?

You got a 35ft stealth bonus right when you get it

Oh, I don't really have problems with it. It's just that in certain areas it's nearly impossible to take a straight line anywhere without being able to get over buildings.

It's more that it's inconvenient and annoying, rather than unfeasible. As I mentioned above, my (eventual) crab spider will probably be getting SS as it's travel power. I dislike SS redside, but I HATE teleport, any side.

Indeed although most villains side pre-jetpack can plainly state w/o knowing a zone like Grandville. Anything but fly can be a pain to use while traveling around. The introduction of the jetpacks were a real nice QoL for both sides in general.

It seems all my toons, regardless of 'concept' wind up with what is for me, the best mechanical advantage:

Hurdle with one Jump Enhancement
Health with the two +Recovery Procs
Stamina four slotted with Performance Shifter with the +End proc

Hasten 3 slotted with Recharge
SuperSpeed with a Stealth IO.

Purchase the fly pack in Grandville (Blueside, I conserve the various fly and jump pack temp powers and use the GvE jump pack until I can buy a jet pack at level 40 in the Shard)

And there you go: Lots of extra recharge and recovery. Superspeed (always on, even in combat) with an excellent jump height and speed with temp powers to overcome the momentary hurdles. Practical invisibility.

Crabs look mighty stupid using Fly, so Fly is right out.

As far as I can remember the redside, Superspeed navigation is downright annoying.

My vote is Superjump (some spiders jump, right?) and a jetpack for the emergencies.

Yep, that was the theory, but like I said in the original topic, most spiders also have superspeed, and as Claws pointed out, some can even move faster than the naked eye can see, so he was thinking about teleport.

All of this is invaluable feedback, thanks a ton for the ideas and input.

Just in case people were wondering, this is the design for my spider.

I use Teleport on several of my Spider characters; RPing it as a hack into the Reclimator Grid around the isles like Manticore hacked into the Mediport server.

Thats a very interesting way to RP teleport into a character origin. I'd think its a fairly unique way in fact.
