Rp Help.
Really, there are many places to go for Good RP. The kicker is to get yourself involved in it.
Walk up and introduce yourself to people. See if you can get into their conversations, and try team with other RPers for an even better experience.
Pocket D is not always the best place in the world, depending on where in there you go, and what else is going on there at the time.

I'd join a quality RP SG. Take your time and make sure you find one you really dig; there are a lot of SGs on Virtue even these days, and there's really no good reason to settle for one that isn't really what you're after. Take your time, check some different groups out, maybe see if you can get in on some teaming and/or RP with the ones that catch your interest in order to see how well you click with them. It's a buyer's market, so to speak, take advantage of that.
Oh, just because nobody's said it yet...
Welcome to the Game and the forums. We're a pretty casual bunch here so feel free to ask questions.
RP isn't too hard to get into. The posts above have given some good advice on that. I'll just repeat about taking it easy at first.
I'd start with some light RP on pickup teams. In character jokes, things like that. Maybe ask some simple questions to those people who are part of an SG about their group.
Think of it as getting to know strangers at a party. JUst don't be rude and you should be fine.

thanks, I appreciate the advice, I got to say the boards here after reading a bunch of messages seem very friendly compared to other games message boards.
I know how to rp quite well. Been doing it for awhile, just in other fantasy medieval games. This is a different beast as it were.
I also noticed that when some people talk to each other they use their characters "real" name versus their hero name. Is it considered improper to try and use the hero name?

Not really, it's just like in some modern comic books where some characters call each other by their real names sometimes. In private sometimes JLA members will call Green Lantern Hal (or Kyle, or Jon, or whoever), Batman Bruce, Superman Clark, etc. Some characters have that kind of relationship, some don't. It really depends on the characters.

My hero, Shadewing, uses that name for everything. Maybe it's because she forgot her real name for some reason, or just likes Shadewing better, I'm not sure yet.
There's no harm in using a characters "real" name or hero name.
Like...Another character I have, for her actual screen name has her real name, plus a title her friends gave her (backstory, whee) She'll probably never get a hero name, either.

The number one way I meet RPers is I recruit for teams (or ask for a team) in broadcast while In Character. Then, once on a team, I roleplay my character in the mission amongst my teammates.
When you broadcast for a team in character, all the other RPers in the zone perk up. When you RP on the team, the RPers on your team will join in.
Then once you've found those people, Friend them.

It also helps to put something indicating that you RP in your comments for the team search function (open your team tab when you're not teamed, and type your comments into the field there). I use it to look for people to fill out TFs fairly regularly and I always go for RPers first if I can find them.

I've not personally ever been contacted via RP based on my search comments, however I also do search for RPers first when pulling together a task force.
Personally, I don't RP out in broadcast, I'll just: ((Any sewer teams out there?)) or the like, and I'll get the odd RP team or two.
Also, you don't have to roleplay everything you do. The RP buffs are probably going to be on my backs about this, but...It's your $15 a month, if you're in pocket D, or anywhere else, and just wanna wind down, not in the mood for anything, and someone starts to RP with you, you have all the right in the world to go ((sorry, not really in the mood to RP right now.))

You mentioned seeing different fonts and bubble above the heads, so maybe I might be able to give you some info there.
Text in italics are emotes or when people are actually doing/thinking something instead of saying it. Sometimes the person emoting might follow an action with speech as in the following example:
Batdude leans back against the shadowed corner and whispers to himself. "I'm Batdude."
Of course, that's not necessarily an action I'd recommend and not necessarily how everyone uses the emote function. Just keep and eye out and you should be able to guess by how it reads in the chatbox.
What I WOULD recommend if you're interested in roleplaying is just roleplaying within a team. Even if the team itself isn't necessarily a roleplay team you can still have fun and there's the chance that you'll meet other roleplayers as well and spontaneously start something fun.

Man, this is like the second thread like this in the past few days. All right. Here goes, I'll show ya how it's done:
/em, Helps.
There. It's not really that hard. Just remember to type the "/em" or use an ";", or else it will look like you're character is saying it instead of doing it. ))
Hello everyone, I am completely new to CoH. I really dig the atmosphere of this game, over any other. I have played countless MMO's and this just happens to have a great feel to it.
My question lies in, where does one go for good RP? I tried the place called the Pocket D. It seems its the typical goth club atmosphere. How does one approach someone in that setting. I kept seeing differnt fonts and bubbles above peoples heads.
Sorry for the so many question.
if anyone needs a background on my hero i can provide one.
