System Slowdown
[ QUOTE ]
Recently, I've had periodic slowdowns on my system, regardless of what I'm doing. It's more noticeable in CoX, where every couple seconds the whole computer seems to pause, even mid-typing (unresponsive, say mid-sentence, then immediately catches up a couple seconds later). It's happened five times so far just typing this out (six now ).
[/ QUOTE ]
First, time it. Is the interval between pauses always the same and, if so, what is it?
Second, there may be a process eating all your cycles and it *may* be easy to spot. I see you're on XP. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL (simultaneously) to bring up the Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and click on 'CPU' to sort that column with highest CPU usage at the top. Watch it for a couple minutes and see if something keeps jumping to the top of the list and taking 90+ percent usage.

No such luck on the process list -- nothing tops out any higher than 47% or so. Timing the delays suggests it's about 2 seconds each time. Running my anti-malware programs (sequentially, naturally).
Also, exploring my computer invariably produces open, unresponsive windows.
Could you also post the CoH Helper log, that says some additional information about your system (such as processor and drivers).

Sorry, it's been years. Um... how do I run one?
The link for coh helper and hijack this are in my sig, just run them and post the results for each please.

I think this is pretty straight forward. Only 1 GB of RAM and there's lots of stuff running in the background. I'll bet that when the machine "slows down", the hard drive is going crazy. It's going crazy because it's swapping memory out to disk. I recommend having at least 2GB of RAM, especially with all that stuff running.
Could be. I also wonder just what apps are on the D drive. It has only 5% free space. You definitely need to free up some space on that drive.

D: drive looks like it is a manufacturer's Restore partition.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
I agree with FryGuy. You have a ton of stuff running in the background and only 1 gig memory. Always go with the obvious solution first (if it's inexpensive at least).
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Inexpensive, but must wait on the weekend. Curses. Insert entitlement nerd rage here.
Any recommended options in RAM, then, or is that something I need to research?
Looks like your system can only take DDR2-533 memory; up to 4GB (4x1GB).
If this is your system then these are your system specs.
Looking at Newegg, these appear to be your options.

I'm also quietly hoping that it's not something catastrophic that I could fix myself. Sadly, I'm not good enough with computers to rely on my own judgment. Anyway, here's my HijackThis:
