nub question about defense...

I've been playing a blaster since my first day so I'm new to defense and defense bonuses... Here's the question - let's say I have 20% melee positional defense and 10% SL typed defense, so does that equate to 30% SL defense at melee?

No, they are seperate, whichever is the better # will be used.

no, positional defense does not stack with typed defense...the game uses the one that is highest and ignores the other. So its a waste to put bonuses in both.

No it's not. Is it better to focus on one over the other? Yes. But in this case, that 10% is still protecting them from all melee attacks that have no S/L component to them.

Herein read the gospel of Saint Arcanaville of the Immaculate Deflection.

Yes, all of it. It will answer any question you might have about Defense and give you a solid understanding of the system.

Untrue. If you have 20% melee defense and 10% smashing/lethal defense it will work as follows:

The 20% melee will give you defense against anything flagged as a melee attack, regardless of damage type.

The 10% smashing/lethal will provide defense against any attack which is flagged as that damage type, regardless of where it is coming from.

A punch thrown at you is flagged as melee and smashing and will only receive the 20% defense number because it is the higher of the two.

A bullet fired at you is flagged as lethal and ranged, so the melee defense is useless, but the 10% defense to lethal comes into play.

So, no, it is not a waste to gain bonuses to both.

The simplest way I can explain this is this:

Find the attack types of the attack: for example: energy, smashing, ranged.

For each of those types, add up all of your applicable defense, in this case to get your total energy, total smashing, and total ranged defense.

Pick the best one of those, and use that.

Basically, attacks don't check against powers they check against defense valus. The defense values are just buckets that the defense powers fill.

In the above case, you would have 20% melee defense, 10% smashing defense, and 10% lethal defense. Your best defense against an attack that was typed smashing/melee would be 20%, and your best defense against an attack that was typed lethal/melee would be 20%. Your best defense against an attack that was lethal/ranged (assuming no other defenses) would be 10%.
