Download CoHelper and post the results. That's your best option if you other players being able to help you. But, first thing that comes to mind to me is check your firewall and make sure the ports the game uses are open. I'm pretty sure there is a stickied thread about firewalls and such causing similar problems.

Try not using steam, and instead download the updater from here:

ftp://client.coh.com/US/

specifically, this one:

ftp://client.coh.com/US/CohUpdater.exe

Download it to your DESKTOP, or a folder made for it on the desktop (important to NOT run it from the City of Heroes install location) and run it from there.

Hopefully, that should fix you up, because Steam is not needed to run Co*... as far as I can tell... as I don't run it.

Whereever you got it from it's in need of serious updating.

We are currently on 19.20090619.5T2

Follow houtex's instructions and the game should update itself to the proper version.

WAIT!

Do not install CoH onto your windows drive, you'll save yourself some headaches that way.

OMG, NOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo........!

It's been installed on my windows drive since '05... so...

Oh, the updater. No, it's ok, I'm not tellin' him to install it there on the desktop, I'm tellin' him to download the *updater* to it, or a folder in it.

Correct, DO NOT install it to the desktop. Let it install wherever it might, it'll probably work better that way. Typically C:\Program Files\City of Heroes. Although you could change it, that'd be totally up to you.

Actually, with Vista or Windows 7 it is recommended not to install it to the Program Files directory.

Besides, it looks like he only has one physical hard drive. I suspect the D: drive that is showing is a partition that is holding a restore image. In addition, there is only 1864 MB free on that drive. If he did manage to install the game to that drive, it would leave him with virtually no free space on the drive.

Two other things to do after getting the game installed from the download. Update to SP2 in Vista through Windows Updates. Update your video drivers to the 185.xx drivers from nVidia. DON'T get the 186.xx drivers as those are causing problems in Vista and Windows 7.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Mine's installed in C:\Games\CoH, so there's that. I never install a game into the Program Files anyway. I's just sayin', default is probably ok... But I don't do default, so I'm screwin' up the works for recommending anything. Meh.

Actually, that is the same path mine is installed to.

On my previous computer it was E:\Games\CoH.

Go figure.
