Too much melee defense for /ela?
I'd say melee defense would be more important, largely because you'll be there most of the time and the heavy hitters in terms of damage tend to be melee attacks. Range def is nice to have, but it's pretty easy to close the gap.
Yeah, looks like our thinking is on the same page. I really don't know of anyway to get any more melee defense without gimping myself, but I think 38% should be enough really increase my survivability. And the 13% ranged wont hurt :P

I've been reading about others messing with their /ela, so I thought I would dust mine off. I stripped my /shield of his IO's, he got boring, and am gonna try to IO out my /ela to make him survivable. (If possible )
My build so far has only 13% ranged defense, but 34% melee defense. (I'm missing my 1 touch of death IO atm, none on market.) So you can say I have about 38% melee defense. Besides that I went for a little regen, but Mainly focused on melee defense.
The question I had was: Should I be focusing more on adding some ranged defense too? 13% isnt really much, but my logic was that most mobs are melee oriented, and the ranged attacks normally aren't as strong anyway. (Freakshow for example) But should I be trying to mix it up some? or will the large melee defense bonuses be a bigger help?

I dunno if working on defense is really the way to go for ELA, especially when the values you'll be working with are so so low. There are way too many "defense debuffing" mobs and such out there, that even just a couple riffle bursts (which will pretty much definately hit you) and you can say goodbye to ALL of your defensive "advantage." ELA also has zero form (afaik) of Defense Debuff "resistance, so getting hit with defense debuffing attacks will have full affect on you.
For me, the way that I increased "my" ELA's survivability was by taking all my +HP accolades, taking and fully slotting both Tough and Darkest Night, and slotting for +HP and +Regen IO bonuses. After I did ALL of this, my ELA was finally much more survivable than before. I tried the "defense" route as well, but was not impressed, so I wouldn't suggest it personally.
Against enemies that do not debuff too heavily, melee defense builds work quite well.
Electric against Cimerorans is awful. The defense debuffs they do will destroy your defense. However, there are plenty of other types of mobs at level 50 to fight - rikti and malta being the notable ones.

Even still, there is enough defense debuffing mobs out there, and mobs with higher base accuracy, as well as tohit buffs, that I still don't find defense on ELA to be as suitable or survivable as what I mentioned.

Its a good alternative since the S/L resistance is 40ish percent (53+% with tough) having a high melee defense is okay when fighting foes without defense debuffs.
Also your primary has a lot to do with it too.. if your SS, Elec or Stone melee you have ways to controll mobs from attacking you.
If your primary is Fire, EM, etc without a way to control mobs AoE wise.. then this is really the only option left. It does work for mobs that do not nerf your defense. Also it helps generate fury without taking the hits since they are still attacking you, just not hitting you as much. Also stacking the GW patron -dam -tohitt debuff helps too.

Fight my brute
Well.. I did get my IO to get my defense up to 38%. I did LGTF, didnt really notice much there.. but majority of them are ranged anyway lol. So I went in an AE mission with mobs who are primarily melee attackers. I could literally stand there and not get hit for a while, had about 10 of them attacking me, it was nice. I'm thinking when I respec though, I may take off a few sets and drop my melee defense down to 30% and grab some other bonuses.
There is a mission Viridian gives, an unlockable contact that gives a freakshow mission to "kill dreck". Freakshow don't have a defense debuff in their ranged attacks do they? I dont believe the mission is timed, so I was thinking this guy might be good for farming it. Would be a nice way to get some purples since they are unbelievably expensive :P, and I just enjoy playing this toon and would be nice if I could farm with him. I do think I need some more regen, and grabbing the +hp accolades would help i'm sure.
Ty for the info everyone, and if anyone else has anything to add, I would be glad to hear.

About how much Regen did you manage to get?
Just curious. Still trying to figure out how I want to slot my Nrg/Elec/Elec brute for the End Game.
Quick reply:
Try TV's Devouring Earth/Freakshow map. Set up a bind to take out the cairns first and you'll be happy with your melee defense.
Here's the outrageous SS/Elec build I use on live. Focus is on +HP and recharge. The idea is that I can find a giant stack of inspirations before my Hit Points go from about 2100 to zero. Some of the holes were for PvP IOs or things I was too lazy to drop in.

That is interesting.
I assume you chose the status resistance unique and aegis unique so you don't get as many stacking stuns from certain circumstances. I never really found a use for those uniques.
I frequently horde up trillions of Malta, Rikti etc. and the stuns do often break through. Sometimes I just use Power Surge for bonus mez protection

Does it work well for AVs? Will they resist most of the to-hit debuff?

For any build that relies heavily on defense, you want to take out the Quartz pets first. They give the DE strong ToHit or Acc buffs, essentially negating player defense. Then take out the Cairns.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to farm that mission. The DE are a bunch of Granites :P
Has anyone even tried the "defeat dreck" mission vill side? It takes some work to unlock the contact, and i'm assuming thats the reason no one knows about the mission :P I still haven't unlocked him lol, but i'm working on it.

Only cairns seem to spawn on that map for me. As an elec/elec brute you have to be a bit creative about what you can farm, and yes, I became very efficient at farming them with some practice. Freakshow are great, and DE isn't that much of a threat, and the map is huge. It has its usefulness. I've moved onto other builds and maps, of course, but for an electric brute it isn't such a bad map to try.
However, Dreck would be a good one. I don't recall if it's timed or not redside.
Well, I got to the dreck mission, Its not timed. But its also in a warehouse.. Which sucks.
