Looking for a Secondary

My stone/fire tank is about to hit 50, and since I'm making 2 or 3 new characters, I'm putting a new tank into the toon list. I know I want him/her to be Willpower primary. However, tanks are very much not my first AT (I'm a blaster at heart), so I'm wondering which secondary folks on the board here think works well with WP. I'm hoping to stay away from Fiery Melee, since I don't want to repeat that set for now. Otherwise, I'm pretty open.

Champion: Feride Edain, Level 50 Vigilante Blaster; Quicksilver Cure, Level 33 Controller; Silent Gemini, Level 44 Tanker; Aisa Moirai, Level 19 Villain Dominator
Virtue: Aurora's Blaze, Level 50 Peacebringer; Atrytone, Level 50 Tanker

Since WP is click and forget, any secondary goes well with it. You might wanna look into the secondaries with AoE mitigation like Stone melee and War Mace because the knockdowns/stuns/etc give you room to regen with Rttc.

You may want to consider Ice Melee. I tried this combo on a whim, and its been a whirlwind of action. I have tried several tanks and deleted them, unsatisfied with sucking an empty blue bar and lackluster damage, so what do I do? I take the least 'protective' of the primaries and least damaging of the secondaries, and its proven to be amazing fun.

He's 16 right now, and I am looking forward on how Ice Patch will alter my style.

The only secondaries I'd really steer away from on a Willpower tanker are Energy Melee:

--- almost no AoE, stuns actually hurt WP tankers, and even its single target damage is no good until 35-38;

and Dual Blades

--- random requirements of the combos means taking every power but Taunt, which you also need; and you will not know which combos you want until you try them all.

Everything else can be made to work, though if you solo a lot I'd also avoid Ice. (If you level entirely on teams, it is quite useful). I wrote a guide that contains a discussion of the merits of the several secondaries from a team tank perspective.

My typical advice for the WP primary is to pair it with a strong AOE secondary; you'll have to depend on the secondary for aggro control due to an extremely weak taunt aura.

Top choices would be /Fire, /Stone Melee and /Mace in my opinion. /Fire offers the most AOE of any secondary, and it's probably the fastest at killing groups of baddies... the downside is it completely lacks any form of damage mitigation other than killing the mobs before they kill you. Stone Melee is probably the best damage mitigation with all the knockdown and stun, and it offers two AOE attacks, one a large radius KD/Stun and the other a moderate damage PBAOE. It also offers a very solid single target attack chain that does very good damage.

I don't have any personal experience with Mace but from looking over the buffs it's gotten in recent issues it ought to be a solid performer; it gives you stuns, KD and several cone attacks coupled with pretty decent damage.

I suggest War Mace. It has near Stone Melee's mitigation (knockdowns and stuns) and better damage output overall (AOEs).

Other sets in order of how well they work with WP:

Stone
Super Strength
Battle Axe
Energy Melee
Dark Melee
Fire Melee
Dual Blade (I don't have experience with Dual Blade so it gets the bottom of the list

Will Power generally is prone to large alpha strikes since it's major form of defense is regen and thus reactive. As such you are going to tend to want to gravitate toward secondaries with physical mitigation (AOE knockdowns, stuns, etc ...) so that you can stagger an alpha strike and ensure your regen capabilities aren't overpowered. I highly suggest taking Tough/Weave with a WP Tanker.

My experience with WP is from my L50 WP/Stone Tanker. I like the Stone Melee set and it has more of a "smash" feel then virtually any other, however from a performance standpoint I wish I had taken War Mace.

Hope that helped.

Energy Melee works better with WP than Dark Melee? Also, an argument could be made for Battle Ax being more effective with WP than SS.

WP/DM sounds interesting to me...could skip the Fitness pool..

The extra regen from Health is too good to pass up though.

YMMV---IMO

I like the WP/DM combination a lot, myself. You can easily achieve excellent toughness, especially when you have Tough and Weave.

But don't skip the Fitness pool: aim at having Stamina at level 20 same as you would with any other character. Having Health definitely plays to your strengths, and the two purely defensive toggles (Mind over Body and Heightened Senses) do more harm than good at the levels before you can put SOs into them, so I postpone them until after Stamina. By doing this, you will have a tanker that is a lot more fun to play as you level. And you will actually be able to sustain Tough and Weave when you get them.
