Could they be killed by something while running away?

I don't think so. These are just the standard guys you rescue. They shouldn't be attackable.

I'm not certain if this is related, but I've noticed quite a few arcs that when entering, you are given the "You cannot enter" pop-up note just before you are zoning in. I'm also seeing that allies are not behaving properly. If set to follow, they follow for a while, then stand in one spot and don't move and wind up getting "lost". Spawn points on maps seem to be out of whack too.
All of these combined, I'm inclined to think its a bug. /bug it or petition it... they may know of something causing the issue.

I had that same thing happen to me while running my arc yesterday. Every time I went to enter a mission I got that. On the last mission I got a different popup but I couldn't read it fast enough before the zoning screen popped up. I also had a released captive that just disappeared as soon as I defeated the last enemy that was guarding him. No final animation, no 'thank you' line, just poof, gone.

I saw this in the Beta and bugged it. As soon as your hostage leaves the map, the mission fails. You can see it in the test mode, with the map open, there is a green marker for the hostage. When they hit a door, you are booted from the map with mission fails.

Yes, that's exactly what's happening. I tested it again and followed the first freed captive. Sure enough, as soon as he went out the door, mission failed.
Surely this isn't happening with all rescue details? Is it specific to this map?

It happened to me on the Midnighter Club map and it sounds like Inazuma is using a standard office map. I just know I bugged it in the Beta and on Live, and I can't publish my arc until it is fixed.

I sent in a bug report and petition about this, along with a few other things.
From what I got in response, there are some bugs with ally behavior, rescue missions failing and spawn placement not working.

This just happened with my timed mission, on the Steel Canyon map. As soon as the captive hit the truck, mission fail. The arc has three other missions with captives, with no timer, and they are fine.
