Hero = EB or AV?

I ask this because I'm playing through the "Hammer of the World" arc with my bot/ff on difficulty level 4. According to the difficulty, I shouldn't see AV's, but I came across Malaise who was classed as a "Hero." I'm sure it said hero, because I read it a second time, and almost quit the mission right there. I was on my way to bed, though, so I just said "to hell with it, if I faceplant I'll try with a team."

This wouldn't even be a question except that I was able to take him down in seconds. No inspirations, no special temporary powers, just the standard bubble bots and blast. I even had him immobilized with the mace mastery power IN ONE SHOT. That shouldn't be possible if he was a hero/AV, and I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be able to nail even a boss with a mag 3 immobilize. Are heroes not as tough as AVs? Should a downgraded hero show up as an elite boss? Could it have been a glitch? He gave me something on the order of 15k exp, but I did have patrol xp at the time.

I've noticed some irregularities in the title of Hero. It doesn't seem as much a rank as it does a title for them. It's supposed to be the equivalent of an AV, but I fought two 'Heroes' the other day that were about the power level of a boss or lieutenant.

I think it gets applied to the enemy, and doesn't degrade based on difficulty, even though the powerlevel does.

He ran through a bunch of AE to level and forgot to buy enhancements!

The label that shows up in the target window can be misleading sometimes as the devs can pretty much make it say whatever they want it to say to fit the story. If you want a more accurate indication of the class of the enemy, right click on them (or pick the actions menu in the target window) and do a show info.

I suspect he was reading as "Hero" but actually classed as an elite boss.

So what do you think he was? I was able to immob him in one shot, but he seemed to take longer to kill than an LT (especially considering he was stuck in the burn patch the whole time). He didn't take nearly as long as the other elite bosses in the arc (although, I couldn't immobilize them in the burn patch). And the exp was WAY high for an LT.

It's really the immobilize that's giving me the headache. Am I missing something about magnitude? I thought you needed a mag 4 to mez a boss, and the mace is only mag 3.

Heros are the exact same thing as Archvillains, except for one thing: when your difficulty/team size cause them to scale down to Elite Boss status, their rank doesn't change in the targetting window.

If you were solo of difficulty 4, he was an EB.

but this isn't always the case. Unless they scale down to ridiculously underpowered EBs some times. I have fought Heroes that are well under the scale of EBs.

Hero as a term is completely meaningless; that's why I always use AV to classify that rank.

Darrin Wade's arc has Kadabra Kill and Sigil both labelled as "Hero", but they're only bosses.

Malaise, in that arc, has boss hit points and is labelled "Hero".

In Mender Tesseract's arc, Miss and Ms. Liberty are EBs that are labelled "Hero" (no, they weren't scaled down - I was on Relentless).

And there are many arcs where "Hero" means "AV" (such as Positron and Valkyrie in Ambassador Kur'rekt's arc).

Strange, I just ran into Positron, playing solo/level 1, and he was listed as an Elite Boss. I teamed with a friend an hour later who had the same mission [but the difficulty raised to 4] and his title changed to Hero with the increased team size/difficulty.
Mission was "Defeat Positron" from Ambassador Kuhr'Rekt.

Edit to add: I agree the title "Hero" is used inconsistently.

[/ QUOTE ]I'm fairly certain when that happens, it's a bug. And it's not limited to Heroes, either. Good example: Ghost Widow in the Mender Silos TF, and in Sister Airlia's arc, is actually Boss level.

If you're unsure about the rank of the enemy you're about to fight, check their HP. AVs have much higer HP than EBs do.

(QR) If you take a look at the Mission Architect...there's several versions of the Freedom Phalanx and Vindicators that you can use as allies/enemies.

Among them are 'Signature Boss Pets'. I suspect these are the same ones that turn up in the Mender Silos TF and possibly elsewhere. The signature characters in this category are labeled as 'Hero' when you target them, but really only have Boss durability.

The very first bank mission I ever did solo I got a hero spawn. Though I did die a couple times, it was no more than a boss w/ the hero tag. The bad part is when they show up as an EB when they are actually a hero.

But yea, as far as I know, if the tag doesn't mess up, hero should equal AV.

A HERO is supposed to be AV rank. MONSTER and HERO are alternate terms for the AV appellation for when 'ArchVillain' doesn't fit the character.

The problem is that too often when a HERO is downgraded to an EB rank, the HERO appellation remains; and vice-versa -- a heroic foe that is AV rank is called an EB when they should be called a HERO.

At level 50, the standard hp of foes should be:

Minion: 431
Lt.: 803
Boss: 2,570
EB: 5,354
AV/HERO/MONSTER: 28,271
GIANT MONSTER: 70,679

So, if you ever come up against a heroic EB or a HERO, immediately check out its hp, and that will tell you its true rank.
