Absence from a Task Force, what happens?
Nope, no benefit. He has to be there at the end to get the merits.

From what I've seen, you have to be there for the start of the last mission. If you log before then and the team finishes, you get nothing. If you enter the last mission and then DC at some point, you should be fine.
Last mission to get badge and merits.
If you DC anytime during last mish (even when exiting completed mish after badge awarded) you won't get merits.
This has happened to me a number of times, and support can't/won't help.
During our last Synapse TF, every single one of us DC'd exiting the clockwork King's warehouse.
While it caused some strange things, I think we got our merits... I guess I don't know that for sure but I have more merits than story arcs + Positron would account for. I'm pretty sure I got them.
Drat... now I'm going to have to go double check. lol
Must not be consistent on DCing in last mish then, I had a total ISP breakdown early in an Eden trial once, couldn't stay connected for more than seconds, and eventually gave up. Never made it to the first wall. Logged in the next day, and had the badge and recipe roll. Haven't had it happen since merits came out, though.

As far as I'm aware, you will get the badge if you DC in the last mission, but you will not get the merits. My BS/DA scrapper DCed at the end of Dr. Q. I got the badge, which unlocked the Rularuu broadsword (which I didn't have before so I KNOW I got the badge) but no merits for it.
If you already have the badge you get squat.

I've had this happen multiple times (client crash upon mission complete) and I got the merits every time.

I believe the game calculates your participation in the last mission based on some combination of:
1) percentage of mission objectives completed while you were in the mission
2) percentage of foes defeated while you were in the mission
3) percentage of time you were in the mission compared to total team time spent in mission
4) and possibly other factors
You can lose connection, you can arrive late, you can probably sit AFK inside the door, you can even log out before the mission is completed. If you meet the minimum requirements (whatever they are), you still get the rewards.

Thanks for the answers.
To be clear, my question wasn't "So I want to be a slacker, join a task force, not do anything and still get credited, how do I do that?"
My question was "Bob, Jim and Mike start a Task Force. At some point, Mike logs off. Bob and Jim complete the task force. Mike logs back three weeks later, way after the TF is completed, what does he see? Is he back to normal ungrouped status? Is he part of a completed TF or can he complete on his own the missions that Bob and Jim completed in his absence?"
He'll be back to normal, ungrouped status.
This is something that I always wondered.
Suppose my friends and I, 6 people in all, start a random task force. Then, a few missions in, one of our friend has to leave. What will this friend see the next time he logs on if we completed the TF during his absence? Does he get any benefit?
