Did you try uninstalling the game and reinstalling? May take a while, but from what it sounds like you're wasting that much time already.
Here is another thought are your video drivers current and what happens when you get the forced disconnect.....is it a loop sound crash???? I know you don't like leaving these forums but I'd try up in tech support and they'll have you post some info and I'm sure they can help you out.
A temporary workaround is to make a shortcut of cityofheroes.exe on your desktop. Then edit the command line to run:
cityofheroes.exe -project "coh"
This will bypass the updater, and probably skip the verifying image as well, I guess. It is possible that certain files are corrupted, or the game actually crashes in some way everytime you quit. You can try to reinstall the whole game as suggested if you have the mood to do so.

Have you checked to see if your drive needs to be defraged?
How old is your hard drive?
How much free space is on your hard drive?

I'll call you and work you through it.
I'd make sure all your drivers are up to date.....and if your running vista make sure your running as admin...that will cause lots of problems if your not.

I asked about the age of your hard drive too.
I started having a similar problem with CoX. It was a sign that my hard drive was going south. Within a week or two, I started getting error reports about the hard drive. I replaced my hard drive and the problem went away.
If you game a lot and your computer gets hot, I'd expect you might have hard drive issues after 4-5 years.
Even if it had to verify the files and repair a couple of them it shouldn't be taking as long as 40 minutes. My first inclination based on that sort of timeframe is a hard drive issue.
If it's not already enabled in bios, turn on the S.M.A.R.T. drive feature; if it's about to fail it will catch most of the symptoms and report it during the boot sequence.

hard drive is one year old. smart drives on.
im just gonna have to format, i keep getting a new error, say there isnt enogh drive space, and thats extreamly not true. has to be a virus that windows one live cant find
Sounds like the hard drive is failing. Best to make backups of your precious files as soon as you can. I'm willing to be wrong, but having those backups in place is the way to go.

I had a similair issue to this last year, but it didn't take me as long to get back in. Mine was a graphics card issue as the game would run fine for 2-3 hours and then crash with a sound loop. Then I would have to re-verify every time, but it only took me about 10-15 minutes to get back in. Bought a new graphics card and had no more issues.
Coming back out of the woodwork after a couple years away from the game...
i had to replace a ram stick, and my hardrive...

ya, drive was 80, ram was 60
Boy, two things becoming intermittent around the same time. Those sorts of hardware problems can be especially frustrating. No wonder you sounded like you were pulling your hair out.
