New Player: Updater stuck at "Connecting"
No, they are not currently down. Are you using satellite internet? There seem to be issues with that for some reason.
Just in case you are using satellite, or for anybody who is, there is a workaround.
The solution to start the updater. Then once it is running start another copy of it, and so on and so on and so on. Wait till one of them connects then close down all the others and go ahead and play (after all updates are downloaded of course). While you are busy waiting for the updater to connect make a new shortcut. Target the cityofheroes.exe file, not the updater file but the cityofheroes.exe. Make the target look like this
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh
With of course any modifications needed depending on which drive and directory you have it in. Once you have completely updated the game you can then use that shortcut to play without updating. Any time the game is patched you will have to run the updater again to update your copy, but after that you can again use the shortcut.
If on the other hand you aren't on satellite then the most common causes for that particular problem are having a reskinning program (such as windowblinds or the default that comes with alienware computers) operating. In that case just tell it not to reskin either cohupdater.exe or cityofheroes.exe.
Another possible cause is having a graphics tablet connected. If that is what is causing the problem then the only solution found so far is to remove the tablet and uninstall its software and drivers. So hopefully it isn't the tablet.

You guys are really unhelpful. How stupid can this company be NOT to run their patches on a bittorrent client, a solution that is universally known to work for everyone?
No I am not running on satellite, and the amount of people running on satellite is so small it makes your suggestion rather useless to most. I'm on cable, never ever had any connection problems to anything. Heck, I even run my own dedicated server for live video conferencing for my website so I know a thing or two about running connections.

I can understand that you are probably very frustrated, however nobody is paying us to try to help in these forums and we don't have to put up with attitude.
Chances are pretty good that your rude comments just killed your chances for further suggestions here.

[/ QUOTE ] Considering we had somebody post just the other day using satellite, I didn't think that question was out of line. It's been brought up several times in the past, and a common cause for your issue. That's why it was brought up.
While it's not the ONLY cause for your issue, it's an easy first question, and if that was the case, somebody would post the workaround. If it wasn't the case, we can usually move forward with something else like the standard CoH_Helper and HiJackThis reports requested from the stikied "Common Solutions & Posting Guidelines" thread.
Like BayBlast said, being rude doesn't get you anywhere. I can tell you most of us are not having an issue getting in right now, so there must be a connection problem somewhere... either at your end, or somewhere in between. You make it sound like you know more about this than we do, so I guess there is nothing else I can suggest for you. Good luck.

Must be an import from WoW where insulting other people and proclaiming your own skills is absolutely mandatory in the forums.
Did you bother to read the rest of my post where I mentioned reskinning programs or the graphics tablet?

You just lost any help from me. Have a nice day.
On the one hand, helping DiEnd would make us a better place than the (the game what's name shall not be mentioned) forums, along with wherever else this kind of response by the beleaguered might be acceptable and even expected, and therefore help cement the Co* forumites as the best in the intarwebs.
On the other hand, I kinda been staying away because of this kind of biting of the hands that attempt to help. I was understandably curious how things are doing these days, but yet see it's still around. Sigh.
So, just in the case that not only DiEnd might be able to be helped, and indeed, to hopefully engender among *all* who are suffering to not lash out at the poor community here when they have trouble...
We're volunteers. We try to help. Assuming you know it all, or that we know it all about you, is absolutely wrong. Biting back, being completely jerk about any response, no matter how asinine it may seem to you, is a one way ticket to ignoreville, or at the very least, an avoidance of the thread in general, because we've been burned enough by poor attitudes of those in need.
In closing, I suggest you read the stickies and pray you find an answer, DiEnd. I kinda doubt you're going to find it here, both due to your response, and due to your lack of posting anything remotely helpful in regards to your machine's specs, it's software, drivers, etc. We aren't mind readers, you know. Instructions for those items we need are in the stickies, btw. Please post them up if you decide to come down off your throne of importance... and maybe someone will be back with you.
Have a good day.

Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012
Hello everyone. I am new to this game.
I just set up a trial account and got the updater started. Unfortunately, it is stuck on "connecting". By the way, the top picture in the screen does not appear. Instead I got a black box with a red x in the left top corner (as in the updater cannot obtain the data).
I opened the ports suggested on the website but still to no avail. I also decided to try and connect directly to my router, still no dice. I have no firewall installed, windows' firewall is also disabled. Are the update servers down?
