Does a scrapper need AoE in teams?
Find the biggest, meanest, ugliest bastards in the spawn, charge them head on, and beat the crap out of them until they are dead. Let the team sort out the rest of the mobs.
The ST nature of Martial Arts is the main reason I don't like the set. I find Dragon's Tail does not add sufficent AoE to the set.
Oddly, I never felt DM was AoE light, but that largely because I took the time to learn Shadow Maul. SM is DM's only real AoE, but it comes up often enough to use rather frequently. Hitting 3 or more targets with SM is one of my favorite sound effects in this game.
It also depends on what you pair DM with. Soul Drain + Death Shroud is serious AoE damage, though not burst. Soul Drain + Fiery Embrac + Blazing Aura is better still. When measured over time, only Throw Spines can out damage BA and DS.
After leveling lord knows how many alts to level 12-15 with Sands of Mu I have become a freaking expert at getting 3 mobs into Shadow Maul
Never thought about Death Shroud that way. Thanks!

My new favorite combo is Soul Drain -> Shield Charge.
That typically kills all the minions/lt's and leaves little mop up.
I just feel so beastly with DM/SD, but there are certain things that just kill me that I'm still getting used to.

Mashuguna, a couple questions to ask yourself about the question you posed is this:
Do you feel inadequate in larger teams? Does it feel like you aren't doing enough for the team by taking out the tougher targets?
My personal take on it, although I don't have any characters quite that high, is that you are filling a completely different role. Unless you are just doing Mission Architect farm maps where huge spawns of the same HP enemies are around, there needs to be one or more people on "tough target duty".
Blasters as well as other AOE type classes can decimate the minions and lieutenants, but the bosses remain alive due to their larger HP pools. At the same time, most blasters don't want to be taking hits from bosses, so you are providing a great service by A. Killing the bosses and B. Keeping their focus off of the squishies!
If you love your class, and you feel like you are contributing to a team, nothing should stop you from enjoying the game!
If you find that you love the massive amounts of orange numbers more, make a class with loads of AOE!

I've played CoH for years but I am just now getting some toons into the upper 40s. I am seeing what fighting is like in the 45+ world and it seems like an AoE fest.
But I love my DM and MA scrappers!
So how do single target scrappers fare post level 40 on teams?

They do okay, but depending on team make up, a single target scrapper could feel a bit redundant. To be fair, if you have two fire blasters on the team, any scrapper could feel redundant.
Honestly, I don't really see the point of getting even more AoE on most teams. The teams I tend to join already have loads of mob destroying capability that lets the group plow through swathes of lts and minions. The hold ups tend to come from the actual hard targets that I excel at beating into small bit sized portions (or bite into small beating sized portions). By focusing on single target damage, I allow large groups to actually get to the next spawn faster by drastically decreasing the time required to defeat hard targets.
As already mentioned .. if you don't have massive AoE .. go pick the biggest ugliest critter and have at. With luck it will die just as everything else dies and the rest of the team doesn't have to waste time and power and AoEs inefficiently whittling a boss down to size.
Or if your claw/sr... Go pick the biggest target, then proceed to become a clawful blur of slashy death which sometimes awes the team as you just survived the party wipe, and killed the next spawn over too.
