Issue 15 on the Training Room today
I never said CoX was at 1/5th I said some other games from the dinosaur age of CoX that are considered on life support are at between 1/5th and 1/10th and still posting similar subs to CoX.
CoX has never soared high or fallen. When it was at 220k did that factor in the EU and/or the asian subs that have since been shut down?
I think a better question to ask rather than just blindly stating that non-fantasy fails to attract big numbers is WHY?
Supers and comic based media are all the rage right now, practically every super powered movie has done well-verywell and even a number of graphic novels turned movie have shined.
Why has CoX as the only super powered MMO failed to capitalize when the world can't get enough super powers? I think partially because the vast majority of super spin off games have been total trash, it has hurt the genre. But with everyone's eyes on Supers *if* CoX is truly great it should have rose like a bat out of hell.
I think the reality is, while a really fun game for many of us (me included, I'm just shy of my 3.5yr mark) CoX really isn't that great.
You're free to bash Jack all you want, but bear in mind very few people will even know who he is, or why some people hate on him. I won't for a second pretend he didn't make some colosal mistakes, but imo he delivered us all a fun game that during his time felt a lot more super powered than it does now and it used to have a lot more exciting and electrified atmosphere. Now everyone hides in instanced missions and you are dumb to venture into the streets.
Where are all the supers?
Plugged into the VR machines across town.
Oh.

Because nobody (mainstream) knows about it.
Even when it was new, CoH didn't advertise worth a damn. A few print ads in a few comics, and that was it, really for the major advertising - maybe some gaming magazines, but nothing else big. You simply don't get players without advertising.
Also, movies and graphic novels do not require any sort of time commitment. I bought copies of the game for my brothers, I included thumb-drives with the latest (at the time) patches, Mid's, vidiot-maps, and instructions to get started... and I still can't get them on, even though they say they want to play. They say they don't have time to even load it up and create an account, much less actually play it on a regular basis, and these are guys in their mid-20s with no family.
On the other hand, I need to remember to call them this week to find out what they thought about Wolverine and Star Trek.

For a time, yes; but given that Jack Emeret's still at the helm;

He's not the lead developer.
Before anyone mentions it, neither is Bill Roper.
(I'll probably get called a fanboy for correcting this. )
