I've been hung up trying to figure out what to use the actual canopy on top.... anything that thin (floor tiles, etc) generally isn't viewable from underneath

Having the exact same problem.

The ceiling/roof is low enough, you can easily just make the columns at the corners go all the way up, basically using a 4-post bead instead of a true canopy.
The only thing I can find that would make a (relatively) decent top for the canopy is the SG Altar/Podium thingy..... but that's a damned big bed.

you could use the would cabnits from the wall items as the box for the canapy and flags for the curtens. not sure yet how to make a wooden post to go from the floor to the canopy box

If you want smaller posts, you can also overlap 2 corner bookshelves and just rotate them so that the sides line up.
