Stealth vs. Stealth
stealth io's do not grant any defense. the stealth power from the concealment pool does raise your defense.
The stealth power has a few benefits over the stealth IO:
1. It provides some defense (albeit very little).
2. It's a toggle, so you can instantly become visible if desired.
3. It doesn't cost millions of inf to get.
Disadvantages:
1. It costs a fair amount of end to use. If you run out of end, you become visible immediately.
2. It imparts a runspeed debuff.
3. The defense it grants drops to near 0 if you attack or take any action that causes it to suppress.
4. It is yet another power pick you may not be able to afford. It also ties up one of your 4 power pool picks.
5. It cannot stack w/ most other stealth powers, whereas the stealth IO can.
IMO, if you find one through sheer luck, or can afford it, get the stealth IO. The leaping one is usually a little cheaper and can still be slotted in sprint.

Most stealth powers give the same bonuses as the Stealth power from the Concealment pool.

i believe in that statement they're talking about just the stealth effect itself, not the +def bonuses.

Don't Stealth IO's suppress as well? Considering they don't grant any defense, it seems I'd still be in the same boat.
Also, from what I'm seeing, the stealth IO grants a 30 ft radius, whereas the stealth power grants a 35 ft radius and invisibility grants 55 ft radius (+ 10% defenses, except psi).
If the power will be suppressed either way (IO/power) why shouldn't I go for the extra radius & defense that the powers offer?

you can't attack while in invis but you can attack while in stealth. best idea is to get an io and stealth.
Ahhhhh! missed that "minor detail" lol
Thanks for clearing it up.
Looks like squishy defender will be squishy.

use mid's and make a build and play with it before commiting your actual build to anything. plus with io sets you can make your squishy not so squishy.

force field defenders can soft cap their defence for godmode and sonics can run around with resistences that make brutes and scrappers cry defenders dont have to be squishy
There is a saying that the higher your defense, the more each add'l % counts. If you don't have any other significant source of DEF, the 1-2% stealth grants you is meaningless. If you're hovering around 40-44%, then that add'l 1-2% is hugely valuable. To think of stealth as a DEF power is really not the best approach to take. Think of it as an aggro management and opening attack placement tool.
I don't know the Defender I'm playing is liking the defense bosst from hover in PvE play, so I'd see the stealth defense bonus similarly. Any little bit helps.
Another thing to realize is that the stealth IO will stack with the stealth power effectively granting you invisibility. That is of course until you attack.

Interesting thought, enderbean.
Icesickle, I know I wasn't totally clear in my OP, but the build is for soloing a defender that I already have in existence, ie., her second build. She is Kin/Arch (I know, I know, odd combo)....she teams great, but solo? yeah.... a little squishy.
The trick has been in finding a good balance of defensive powers without sacrificing what little damage she can do with Arch. Soloing her is very slow going... I was thinking I could use stealth to help her get through things a little faster. Hence, the weighting of stealth IO vs. stealth power.
Thanks everyone for their respective perspectives.

[/ QUOTE ]Most forms of stealth will suppress to 0 when you're in combat. The ones that also provide defense will cut the defense bonus to 1/2 or 1/3 of its normal value while in combat.

Okay, I've been working on a Defender solo build in Mid's and slotted a Celerity +Stealth into my Sprint. pretty standard.
Then, out of curiosity, I popped in the Stealth power from the concealment pool... and noticed that my defenses jumped.
In comparing the two, there was no additional defense listed for the Stealth IO. It listed only the perception/range as the affected stats. Is this truly the case? or is it simply a matter of the defenses not being listed or reflected in Mid's?
I did check the P-wiki and attempted a forum search, but most of what I saw did not answer this particular aspect/difference between the two.
