Returning after 2 years

Hi, it's been awhile since I played (about 2 years). I was initially thinking of just hopping back in with my old character (fire/energy) at about lvl 20, but I'm betting there have been so many changes since then that it would be better to just start over from the beginning.

I'm primarily a solo-er due to time constraints, as well as not really being able to sit at the computer for the (at times) several hours that grouping involves. Also, due to small children, I tend to have to jump up at random intervals to take care of them.

At any rate, I'm wondering if there are any good updated guides to playing a solo blaster. I've seen some people say fire/ice, or what have you, but no actual builds-most seem to be focused for teaming. Are there any? Or does anyone have any advice on a good solo build?

As far as solo builds go, I'd aim for good Single-Target (ST) damage in both the primary and secondaries. For this reason, I'd go either a Sonic/Energy or an Ice/Energy. Fire primary has good ST damage, but it's focus is primarily for AoE. Ice primary has a wide array of ST holds, and every single attack is a slow. It is a close second to Fire in terms of damage output, but Fire has less survivability in the drawn out battles.

Sonic doesn't start off as strong as either fire or ice, but as your recharge goes up you can deal more damage due to the -resistance effect, and has some great tools for survivability (cone sleep, for instance, as well as a good stun that pairs well with most of the /energy attacks).

If you're aiming for a less survivable toon that could be more damaging if/when you get on teams, I'd stick with fire/energy. It's still a solid combo. If you're really not looking to team EVER, then I'd go either sonic/energy or ice/energy.

I'll post my Sonic/Nrg build later when I get home from work.

Also, in terms of the changes since you've been gone, refer to the link in my sig (3B Guide to Blasting), it points you to my post, made in '08, that describes the changes that happened in i9

Fire/Energy is a great combination of Single Target and AoE. Not just AoE. Very few powers outside of Ice can beat Blaze in terms of damage.

You can start off with your Fire/Energy, it hasn't changed very much outside of a magnitude reduction in Total Focus.

I'm kind of partial to Fire/Ice

You get the best of both worlds. The /Ice gives you plenty of tools, allowing you to fully utilize your AOE potential, solo or teamed!

Shiver is a boss killer IMO, slow em down then melt em!
Ice Patch even makes Rain of Fire not so bad...

Were you around for the changes of Defiance 2.0?

If not, you are in for a pleasant surprise the first time you get mezzed. Your Flares and Fire Blaze and Energy Thrust will still fire! hurray!

I love Defiance 2.0!

(It does some other stuff as well, like give you an increasing boost to damage).

I have a soloing Fire/Energy in the mid 20s. You will be fine with your random-interuption playstyle with one of them.

I started up Archery/NRG. pretty fun and feels strong on single targets atm.

Can anyone expound on the virtues of Energy/Energy or Energy/Elec ? Those two seem to fit the development of my character concept the best, but like the OP, I've not been around for years!

Thanks!
