Crappy Graphics Are Crappy

So whenever I log into the game, after about 10 minutes my graphics turn into this:

If I lower the graphics quality, it will fix it temporarily for another 10 minutes, then again it will appear like the image. As long as I continue to change the quality, it will make it better.

This all begin the day i14 went live. I have no other info as to why this is happening.

Hey, stuff like this started happening to me a few weeks ago (though it was mainly more like half invisible textures, or textures applying to other textures, rather than being spread out like that). My graphics card was overheating, but was only happening in CoH. I kept playing, and eventually noticed physical damage (blown capacitors) on my card after about 5 or 6 screen lockups which forced me to manually shutdown. Now it seems to give me texture glitches while playing other games, like TF2, as well. I advise you check your card for damage. I've heard this (or similar things) happening to other people as well, it seems highly suspect, yet I can't see why one game being patched would cause video cards to massively overheat to the point that they're so damaged they start overheating during other games as well. It may just be your video card's time to die, but considering the multitude of threads similar to this I've seen cropping up since my problem began, City of Heroes seems highly suspect to me.

So, right now, I'm pretty much not playing City of Heroes while I wait for a new computer I ordered to arrive. Don't want to risk completely destroying my card before it gets here, and playing CoH on my laptop is nearly unbearable for me.

It's the card overheating, guaranteed. That is the only thing here which has ever produced that effect.

So do the regular stuff. Make sure the card and fans are clean, that the inside of the case is clean, that all fans are spinning. Get speedfan or something similar and check the temperatures.

Then go out and buy a new card because you are going to need one in a month at most.

After the latest patch, I am also running into huge lag.

BigSung. Your problem is that your video card is bottom of the line. It's really not suitable for this game except on the very lowest graphics settings. This latest update through the Magic pack added several intense graphical features in the form of the new costumes and powers. Odds are that your card is simply being pushed beyond it's limit.

And even if the card can still play in minimal graphics mode your drivers for it are 3 years out of date which makes a big difference.

I noticed the issue on the driver, so I have gone and updated that one with the latest. As for video card, I might have to look into a new one. Any video card that you recommend that doesn't cost an arm and leg?

While you're waiting for a graphics card which can handle 3D gaming: update Windows; update your graphics card driver; get rid of all those background processes (Yahoo, roxio, java, etc...).

To the OP: Your card is almost certainly overheating. Get yourself a can of compressed air and clean the dust out of your case, if you haven't done so already. If the problem doesn't go away, you should figure out a way to improve the cooling capacity of your system, although given the fact that it's an HP, this might be a challenge.

If the card is physically damaged (blown out capacitors, burn marks, warping, etc.) then you should get yourself a new one to avoid further damage to your system.

The graphic problem only starts when I enter the AE building. As long as I don't enter it I'm fine.

Well, yeah. The AE buildings usually have lots of people in them so your card has to work harder than usual to render all that stuff and starts to overheat. Try going to the AE building in Brickstown. That one is almost always empty.

Your right. I switched out my graphics card and the graphics problem, crashing, and quite a bit of lag all went away.
