Fullscreen and Resolution Issues

Hi there,

I've recently installed the Mac OSX client. My computer is a Mac Pro with 3 monitors. 1920x1200x2 and 1920x1080. I'll start with what my goals are and then follow up with what I've tried to accomplish these goals. I should also note that I have extensive experience configuring and running City of Heroes (somewhere between Issues 2 and 3) and World of Warcraft under Transgaming's Cedega engine, which appears to be identical in configuration to Cider.

I would like to be able to play CoH at 1920x1200 resolution on my "main" monitor without it being obscured or positioned according to the menu bar and the dock and without my other two monitors being blacked out.

If this isn't possible, I'd like to be able to play at 1920x1080 window size or any arbitrary window size. This will allow me to still use the majority of my resolution and be able to see the contents of my other monitors.

(At this point I'd like to point out the difficulties I had in changing the resolution within the game and having this change persist upon launching the application again).

After discovering that Command + Enter would put me into Window mode, I tried this. I found that my game running at 1920x1200 ran just as well, but the window decorations as well as the menubar forced part of the window to be rendered below the bottom of the visible area. As well, the OSX dock protruded into the game.

I then tried changing the in-game resolution to something lower and switching to Windowed Mode. This is the closest I've come to success. Unfortunately, there wasn't a full and proper range of resolutions that was offered to me, so I ended up with 1600x1000.

With a 1600x1000 window, I tried resizing it. Manually dragging the corners didn't work. I discovered the /screen slash command (that conflicts itself when you type inproper arguments to it). I was able to use /screen 1680 1050 to make changes but unfortunately the window didn't resize to accommodate the increased resolution.

I also tried adding a "Desktop" = "1920x1080" line to the [x11drv] section of the config file found in the Application Bundle itself. This change didn't get saved as I'm sure it was overwritten by the CoH updater. I am currently at work and have added the "Desktop" = "1920x1080" line to the config file in ~/Library/Preferences/City of Heroes Preferences/

Boot Camp became not an option once I realized that the graphics performance in OSX was superior. So if anyone has gotten this working in a similar way or has tried, I'd really appreciate some feedback.

Thanks,
Jackson

This is about as close as you'll get, except you can right-click the dock and turn Dock Hiding on.

You also should be able to drag the CoH window off the main screen to another monitor's space.

Modifying the Transgaming configuration files didn't get me anywhere, I'm not sure if those settings are referred to outside of the drive mappings.

And using /screen to set a resolution that isn't offered by the Graphics options will reset to 800x600 on next launch.

It is unfortunate that no one has had any success with this. I guess my next best option is using CrossOver Games or Wine.

I'm curious about this as well. The same thing happened when we added a second monitor to our iMac. Does anyone know if this is something to do with Cider, COH, or a combination of the two? The blacked screen is not usable to COH at all, as far as I can see.

Just an FYI; the Mac client performance is awful. I get much better performance on higher settings with no lag running the Windows client in Boot Camp. On my Mac not only does the client crash regularly, but even at lowered settings I get severe lag.

The lag is particularly bad in the Vanguard base in the RWZ. My Mac client ends up looking like a slide show where the Windows client under Boot Camp on the same machine has no lag in that area with higher settings. Losing performance under Boot Camp using the Windows client shouldn't be your concern.

I guess your mileage may vary, but I believe the Mac client has performance that's good enough for me not to deal with the hassle of Boot Camp. Boot Camp was taking up a lot of maintenance time (as Windows tends to), plus the Windows CoH client wasn't really stable around the "bleeding edge" video drivers laptops (Macbook Pro, late 2008) usually get.

On my Vista based gaming PC, I have issues there too with occasional crashing, lots of lag, and "pauses" every 15 seconds. Vista has been such a pain, I've been threatening to use the Mac for CoH full time.

The difference, I believe, is that the Windows client problems are a mystery, while the Mac client's problems are well known and on the list to be fixed eventually. It might even be possible for them to be fixed before the PC issues.

BTW, you can reduce the RWZ/SG Base/Pocket D lag by turning on Advanced Settings and sliding World detail to 100% or less. I have mine set to 100%, and after a few seconds in a large SG base the lag subsides and it behaves almost normally.

Yep, I did that. That isn't as bothersome as lowering character detail which really reduces my enjoyment of the game. I still am getting noticably worse performance Mac side. If it didn't also crash I could live with it.

I am not seeing issues with Vista which really pains me because otherwise I hate Vista. I hear Windows 7 is really good, though I am a Mac person at heart. Although I *am* having issues with Boot Camp and Vista -> the Mac client isn't properly passing keystrokes to the system which prevents Ventrillo from working properly. Vent won't work with a key press activated output. I don't have an issue with Vent running on the Mac side.

I am anxious for a Mac fix, but I haven't read anywhere that the Mac client has been improved except this last patch fixed a rare memory leak. If that is supposed to fix some of these issues I will eagerly try the Mac client on test.

Only one way to find out. We can use as much feedback as possible on the new client on the Training Room.

I just want Coh to allow "native" resolution for multi screening, instead of stretching. I got 3 of the same displays, and it makes me sad that i cant have super wide screen mode on (instead everone and everything gets pulled out of proportion so even an 8 ft tall twig like toon looks grossly overweight). If not that i wish we could set a window for all of the chat windows, nav, bars, map... etc, and one to jsut enjoy the look of the game. I hate wasting such a beautiful game on having to see all that other stuff to survive. On my mac this all becomes even worse. I think you should move your dock onto the left most "wall" and play on your middle or rightmost display. Thats how i do it (usually in windowed mode so i can have Paragon Wiki open on the other screen).

Someday I can hope that those of us who use multiple screens will be taken into consiteration when MMOs are made/developed.

I don't think this will happen. It used to be that you could set the camera distance to a much larger number than it is currently. I remember stretching my windowed CoH to span 2 monitors. Very slow frame rate, but it was an impressively wide view.

You cannot do that now because I think the cap on camera distance is set such that there is no advantage given to other players in PvP. The field of view would be greater on dual monitors and therefore you'd be able to see opposing players approach you.

Like you, I play with dual monitors, and I'd love to be able to have the UI elements truly float off the screen so I could plunk them on the other display(s). I was envisioning a Herostats like program that wouldn't just monitor the information coming from the game, but would be able to replace the UI elements such as the friends list, channel chats and hopefully even the map.

well make that 1 dozen and 1. I'd just like to be able to see the stupid game. After trying to get onto it since Beta I finally am able to do so and voila the external monitor that I require because of my eyesight is unusable because I can only mirror rather than arrange with CoH.

way to make EVERYONE feel welcome. You're a minority, you don't matter, nice tone.

THIS problem is easy to fix.

If you're using a Mac Pro, hook up the external monitor and set it in the Displays pane of System Preferences to be the default monitor. Your smaller single monitor should go dark, and CoH should work fine.

On a Macbook or Macbook Pro, boot it first, then hook up the external monitor, and also an external keyboard and mouse (both required to make this work). Close the lid. You might then have to wake it up again using the keyboard. After that, you'll be using your external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

The specific situations CoH does *not* support is playing the game spreading the UI across two monitors at once, or using the desktop on one monitor and the game on another.

Just wanted to add, once you wake it up you can open the lid without messing up the external monitor setup (The LCD on the laptop will remain off). And if you're playing CoH, I would HIGHLY recommend that you open the lid. A lot of heat gets dissipated from the keyboard and closing the lid kinda messes with that.
