Will the new 24" imac run COx without lag?

I have always bought PC's in the past, but now I thinking of switching to Mac.
I would love to get the new Mac Pro tower but it costs way too much.
The next step down seems to be to new 24 inch Imac. Is the Imac enough machine to run city of heroes on recommended resolutions without any lag?
How does Cox run in general on the mac so far?

Runs quite well on my 15" MacBook Pro. Though there's the occasional crash, but that's greatly minimized by using /reloadgfx every so often.

I bought a new iMac, the one with the GeForce GT 120 video built in. It runs ok at 1920x1200, but is a bit laggy. I turned it down to 1600x1000 and it runs fine. Loses some sharpness doing that, since LCD monitors work best at only one resolution. Switch to windowed mode, regain the sharpness, but your window is smaller than the full display. I normally run it in full screen mode.

Overall the only problem I have seen on the mac, have been occasional video flickers. I haven't experienced the zone crashing bug that some people have.

I have no idea of the performance of the less expensive model that uses the nVidia 9400 graphics. There was a thread in the forum somewhere about using a Mac Mini for COH, which uses the same 9400 graphics.

Overall, I think it is great. I abandoned Windows at home about the time that COH was released, except for my game machine, and until recently, the only Windoes game I still played was COH. That machine was retired as soon as my new iMac was unboxed.

Im hoping it does as i just bought my first apple computer
IMAC with 24 inch 3.06 ghz core2duo & 4 gigs DDR3 ram & the Ati 4850 Video card option Hardware wise its all better than my 2.5 year old high end PC that im currently playing CoH on so im hoping to run COH native in os x Ill have vista on a partition for those vista games with no mac support

as for your gt120 it is just nvidia's rebranded geforce 9300 vid card with is budget card line. the Ati card is a high end card still only some of Nvidias brand new $800 cards do better and those are for hardware addicts who pay $800 for a 2% performance increase.

Plus that nvidia 9400m card thats in the mac mini 7 laptops is actually the Geforce 8400. you see nvidia in the last year have rebraded thier vidoe card named 3 times! so in reality nobody knows wich card is what without exhausting research and going back to nvidia and compare models. you will also if you look find several offical announcements on it by nvidia but its just pr. currently the best video cards period for gaming for apples are the ATI 4850 (imac) and 4870 (mac pro) wich is just the 4850 with a lil faster ram on it.

Thanks to a few irrepressible beta testers who don't sleep, the Mac version is very close to on-par with the Windows one.

There are still a few small issues, but they're being worked out. No FSAA, and some occasional texture related lag and crashes, but ironically running in Vista has its problems too (pausing and occasional crashing).

I think you'll be happy running the Mac client.

I just bought a 24" iMac (2.93 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM, and the nVidia GT 120 Video Card with 256 megs of VRAM), and I must say it runs the game awesomely well. Even red side, I hardly seen any lag. The only time I did see lag was in Atlas Park during a Rikti invasion, and it wasn't lag so much as running a bit behind (ie powers activate about 2 seconds after you hit them). I have the graphics on the second highest setting and it looks great. I could run it on maximum settings too, but I feel that is smoother the other way, plus, I hardly notice as the difference is mostly terrain distance. I can't speak for the 9400M, but you get the GT120 or higher, you will be just fine :-).

Hope this helps!

You may get better results by setting the game's actual resolution to match the actual resolution of your LCD, but then using the RenderScale slider in the game's graphics options to reduce the computed 3D resolution.

I've been playing on my 15-month old iMac with very few problems, so any of the newer machines should be just fine.

I highly recommend Miuramir's advice. I play at the same resolution as my desktop, which is 1900x1200 (or whatever the highest one is, which is the native resolution), and I use the graphics slider. I have it set on the second highest setting, and it runs very well. The only real lag I get is during Rikti invasions, and I cannot imagine someone not getting lag during one of those things.

24 inch 3.06 ghz here. 1920 X 1200 resolution with 2nd best graphics settings. It runs better than my PC any day of the week except for one caveat which is hopefully being fixed soon. I do get a sudden crash without warning. Not a mapserve (when the CoX server is having trouble), but just a sudden program close. /e reloadgfx seems to prevent it when I enter new zones, but I forget sometimes. That is a pain in the rear sometimes, but I can relaunch and be back in game in about 10-15 seconds. Other than that, it runs like a dream with better quality of graphics, sound and loadtimes than my prior pc experience with COH which I have been playing for a bit now.

I am getting very different results on my iMac 24". (Until the recently announced iMacs it was top of the line) Running at full resolution with the graphics settings turned down the game lags badly in certain areas. The Vanguard base is like a slide show, and a lot of the Rikti tunnels give me problems. In addition it randomly crashes.

If I turn down the settings low enough to get smooth turning characters just out of range lose all their detail; Tsoo Sorcerers have no hats at range, etc.

If I reboot into Windows on the same machine (via Boot Camp) I get *much* better performance. The Vanguard base is fine on much higher settings, I don't get the crashes, and everything is generally smoother.

It's really annoying to reboot into Windows everytime I want to play CoH but the performance hit is very noticeable and annoying, never mind the crashes. I am actually kind of annoyed that the latest issue didn't have Mac performance changes.

Moonlighter, the Mac performance changes are supposedly on the agenda, but didn't make the Issue 14 release date. Hopefully it'll be soon.

As for increasing performance, try setting the graphics to the second-highest setting, and then turn on Advanced settings. Set the World Detail no higher than 100%.

Also, use /reloadgfx *after* zoning if things seem unusually laggy.

I have one of the new MacBooks with the 9400M, and I'm extremely pleased with it in general--performance is overall slightly better in dense actions like ship raids than on my P4 PC equipped with an 8600GT/512.

I run at both 1200x800 on the built-in display and on an external monitor at 1650x1050. Lag in the Vanguard base has been noticeable, and in the SG base has been downright abhorrent to date.

I also set the Gamma slider to 131% in Graphics Options, as this matches hues better to the Windows version to my eye--the Mac is overbright elsewise.

Some days I just wake up cranky. Today might be one of those days...

The issue seems to be the high resolutions/pixel count of the 24" monitor. Macbook screens are too small and the resolution too low to hit this problem.
