A few PvP build questions

Let me start off by saying I began playing this game before CoV came out (albeit not long). As soon as CoV came out, I immediately made a Bots/FF Mastermind. I got him to 37 and then my account ran out. Just recently, I reactivated my account and got X-cutioner (name of my toon) to level 50; my first level 50! He is quite easily my favorite character I've made, and he's quite dominant in PvE. He's even pretty good in PvP for a Mastermind. I'm quite happy with him and play as him all the time, even though he's 50 and very well setted. I consider myself lucky to enjoy my first villain that much.

Ok, now away from the intro. While X is good and all in PvP, he requires prep to be great (summoning, upgrading, and bubbling all of my bots then turning on the toggles). And that can be aggravating in a PvP zone.

I've despised Brutes for the longest time, because SSOOOO many people play as Brutes, especially SS/WP Brutes.

But I recently started to want a Brute just for PvP.

So 2 days ago, I made a BA/WP Brute. I'm a big comic book guy and I pretty much need my characters to go by a theme. It's why X is very tech-themed (and luckily still awesome). And it seemed to me that Battle Axe and Willpower is very thematic. Not that SS/WP isn't, but I would like a more uncommon build. Also, I've heard BA is very damaging single target but also very endurance hoggish. I figured Stamina and Quick Recovery would cover that well. Plus it looks so cool with my character!

So I have a few questions:

1. Is this build going to be inferior in PvP? I don't really know whether or not WP or BA are good in PvP, but I figured Battle Axe would be solid at least (very damaging, but lethal is resisted well in PvP) and that Willpower wouldn't be so popular if it wasn't at least good in PvP.

2. I was considering making a ff/elec/power Defender to focus on PvP endurance drain. I hate fighting /elec defenders in PvP.

3. Also wanted to make a Blaster if the above Defender wouldn't be good in PvP. What are the better Blaster builds?

4. Lastly, I know that /dark Masterminds are good in PvP, but the only way I would make a /dark MM is if it were a Necro/dark because I like the themes. How would that fair in PvP?

Help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

1) Yes, WP isn't that great. Its popularity is because how much of a PvE monster it can be. In PvP, you have much better choices.

2) If you want to drain as a defender, consider Kin/Elec.

3)Sonic/EM is a good one to use.

4) No they aren't. /Dark is terrible for PvP.

Why all the brutes and tanks take Super strength is for RAGE, and its really easy to perma.

Wouldn't go that far. Against anybody without defense, they are pretty amazing actually. Basically if you can land the heal, you're pretty much impossible to kill. It heals all your pets (and yourself) from like 0 to full in 1 heal, and recharges fast.

The problem is defense. Against defense sets, you're completely hopeless. If you can't land the heal, you're dead in seconds.

Eh, I've seen my share of /Dark MM's get TP/killed in short order. There just wasn't enough there to keep them alive in a bad situation. While the heal is great, the set as a whole falls behind compared to say Storm or even FF.

I do a little PvP with my Thugs/Dark (zone and arena) and if I'm fighting a high-damage, high-defense build, I find myself reaching for greens very often. Otherwise it's pretty easy sailing.

Any MM can get owned if he gets TP'd away from the pets. That's not dark's fault...that's just a MM problem. Even for FF MM's....just found out yesterday that PFF no longer protects from TP foe. I guess nothing does anymore. Yet another bug that will never be fixed.

There's no doubt that some other MM sets are way better, but /dark isn't as unplayable as many claim.

True, but other MM secondaries have means to disrupt a TP'er after they get ported. Aside from PFF, you have repulsion bubble or a well timed Force Bolt, Storm has Hurricane, etc.

Rest still protects from TP I think. But we can't really count that, can we? Do oranges still work?

I'm not sure if they fixed it, but it took 2 oranges to stop TP before.

I've heard you need 2 small oranges to be protected. But this game is so retarded, I don't want to even bother to test it. I just pretend TP protection doesn't exist...just like the devs want, for some completely inexplicable reason.

Btw rei, if you wanna get technical...dark MM's get an autohit mez, which can help when getting TP foe'd. Gives you a couple secs of time. But yeah...other than that and the heal, the set is basically a waste.

So far, I understand that I should go with kin/elec instead. I did consider it, but a friend of mine who I team with often has a /kin controller so I wanted more variety.

And WP isn't too good for PvP? That's no good.

One of WP's big mitigation powers, Rise to the Challenge, can be detoggled by a mez, which you have no means of stopping. That's what hurts WP a lot.

If you go with a Kin/Elec defender, be very prepared to not kill anyone. Ever. I have been stubbornly trying to make it work during kickball and fight nights, but with the shift to melee/defense, it is hard to hit people enough to do sustained damage. Plus, the blue shield may as well be painted into a target symbol.

Edit: Have not tried it in duels, sorry. It may function a lot better there.

So then what is a good PvP primary for a Brute?

And also, what's a good PvP Blaster build?

SS for brutes.

I hear good things about Sonic/EM blasters. Haven't gotten to really see one in action yet though.

Omg can we get this stickied already?

Playable blaster primaries:
sonic, psy, fire, archery...probably in that order

Playable blaster secondaries:
anything...but preferably EM or devices

Is Battle Axe really that bad and if so, why is that the case?

It's the case because battle axe has no rage and super strength does. Simple as that really.

^This.

As happens in many situations in this game, Developers make a couple equivalent sets, then out of the blue they pick one of them and add something that makes others subpar.

Like Impale, for example, is the reason there are so many spine scrappers around PvP... in detriment to everything else.

As far as PvP go, you have like 20% viable combination of powers. 45% if you're really stubborn, persistant and rich.

So Hurl is really that big of an advantage in PvP?

Ko Blow is technically ranged too. And together, yes, they're better than just about the whole axe set.
