Don't forget the pig-tails...

(Grats on the DD, also! An awesome piece. The only thing I can think of - from a personal preference standpoint - is a wink with a bit of a twinkle in her eye... and yes.. I was looking at her eyes!.... eventually.... )

Having a hard time keeping up with the messages? lol

[/ QUOTE ]

Haha, yeah. Over 1,000 messages so far.

This has really juiced me up to do more. I finished my Hawkman and Emma Frost models today and have had requests for Wonder Woman and Black Canary. I'm thinking I found me a niche.

As soon as it's legal. I don't want to jeopardize my chances of working for DC by selling prints before I even work with them. But once I'm in the door, I'll be all over it.

I've actually been wondering about this! I do see artists that are/have worked for DC or Marvel or etc. that sell work of licensed characters as commissions or whatever. That's legit after you actually work for them?

Yeah i was wondering this myself. Because i notice ya don't sell prints at all. Or do ya?

If not then i know theres quite a few pieces in your gallery that aren't DC you could sell as prints no?

Just working for them isn't enough. Typically, once an artist is working for a company, there's room to negotiate print rights to certain images. In fact, allowing an artist to sell prints can lessen the amount the company has to pay for the art in the first place, since print rights can be part of the compensation. Companies will also have to make sure certain details are observed, such as not releasing the print before the comic it's part of, and not making prints of an image the company wants to make prints of themselves (so there's no competition).

But my observation is that comic companies really aren't into making prints, so they let their artists do it. WOTC was that way back when I did MAGIC cards.

As far as why I don't have prints on my DA site - none of those characters are mine. I have images designed that I intend to release as prints, but I'm adamant about the characters/images being my own and not a rehash of someone else's commission. I would find it cheap if I'd paid for a commission and found the artist making side-cash on prints of my character - so I won't do that to others.

Now... should I get into DC/Marvel, you can bet your hats I'll be making a big push into prints. I've been doing all my images poster-size recently to allow maximum quality.

I can appreciate that - I certainly wouldn't want an artist selling prints of something I'd commissioned them to do for me - I'd be thinking why did I pay that much when I could get a print for that little?

It doesn't stop me from wanting to place my order for the "Doug's Portfolio, Volume 1", though.

Heh, I have dreams of eventually releasing a book of colored 3D hero art, like Alex Ross' 'Mythology' or Greg Horn's 'The Art Of Greg Horn'. Do enough covers and the art should be easy to scrape together into a collection.

I don't sell prints of previously commissioned work, either. Its actually in part of my terms of commissioning. For the same reasons... it seems skeevy.

But thanks for clearing up the prints of licensed big-name characters. I never really got how that flew with copyrights and stuff and thinking that the big publishers wouldn't want to lose a dime!

Doug these last two that I have seen (Ivy and Zatana) have just been the very best. As good as your work has always been these two really seem to go to a higher level. Very very nice.

Took the words right out of my mouth, I didn't know you could get better, but you did.

Very Impressive.

EDIT: gratz on the DD, finally read the rest of the thread ^.^;;
