Oh noz! It's Monday again!
And time to change my avatar until Valentine's day.

Another Monday??? Nuuuuuuu!
Another day at work....
Coming back out of the woodwork after a couple years away from the game...
Am I the only person who likes their job? :O
Probably.
I don't mind my job, it's just the weekends have been too short lately and our company is in the process of doing audits so lots of late nights getting prepared.
On a good note though, I got my new computer up and running and the game runs like 100X better!!

I have to get a new computer. I have the money, but know nothing about building them and everyone I'm asking is telling me something different and it is making my poor wittle brain explode!
Actually putting a computer together is easy. It's not like there are all that many ways to put the parts in so that they aren't in the right places. Just remember the heat sink compound goes between the processor and the heat sink, not the processor and the socket (yes, someone did this when I was working customer service at a computer store) and that the spacers that come with the case are there for a reason - screwing the motherboard directly to the (conductive!) backplate is not a good way to make the computer work (another brilliant computer engineer did that one). Also, don't file out the plastic tabs in the memory slots just so that you can fit DDR memory in a DDR2 slot.
As for picking parts, what's the conflicting advice you're getting?

I just bought a refurb from Dell. I didn't need a monitor or any accessories so I got just the desktop for around $200.00. 3.2 ghz processor and 2GB RAM expandable to 4GB if I want to spend the extra money. It has an intergrated graphics card(don't remember what kind ATM) that can run the game on the highest graphic settings w/o any lag so I am thrilled! The only issue was when I got it I discovered just how old mine really was because it didn't have the old inputs for the keyboard and mouse so I had to go out and buy news ones with USB connections, lol. The only thing I don't like about it though is my old HP had slots for all the different device cards and this one just has like 16 USB ports, no where for my SD card so getting pics off my camera is a bit more of a hassle.

Nah, I like mine, and I'm deeply grateful to have it. That does not mean, however, that I wouldn't have rather continued with Plan A of "stealing Mr. Sins warm spot in bed and drifting back to sleep for a couple of hours, to be followed by coffee and a day of sewing."
Speaking of, Anightgirl, check out the canvas I bought to make groccery bags from:
- First one
- Second one
Also got some neat buttons and Mr. Sins picked out some fabric for custom bowling shirts. We will not speak of that. Had a nice chat with the lady at the shop, all about sewing for other people and what we were both working on at the time. If you're wondering, I went to this shop here .
All sorts of craziness.
You only need dual core... no you need quad core... this brand sucks... no wait it rocks...
Don't build prebought they use cheap stuff.
No buy prebuilt prices are dropping due to crappy economy and they are cheap as hell.
Don't use Vista, vista is fine.
Use this brand vid card NO this one, get 1 G vid card mem... shut up fool 1 G is ridiculous and over priced... she only needs 500K MB vid card memory is fine.
AMD processors are fine. NO they BLOW and it is worthwhile to pay for Intel.
Syn's head usually explodes about here.

Yeah there are a lot of different opinions out there. It really depends on what you want the machine to be able to do. If you want a "gaming" build you may want different options then if it's just going to be a general use PC and vice versa. I was going to get a dual core, but was cheap so I just went with a Pentium 4 3.2 ghz processor. I don't really play any other games besides COH and the specs on this PC I got are well above what the game requires to be run on optimum settings to that was really my only requirement, besides lots of storage space for my music files to transfer off my old PC. It has a 500G hard drive to and I can't even imagine filling that up ever considering my old PC had 150G and I still had 60% free space on it.

I've built 2 of my PCs from the ground up and let me tell you what I know from my experiences.
-Generally it's considered better to build your PC. You have better control over what is in it, you don't have to put up with so much superfluous bundled software and you get a better price at the end of it all.
-The PCs that I have put together have lasted longer than any of my pre-built ones. Granted, those were PCs built in the 90's and mine were made from new parts in the 00's, but it's still comparable in my eyes.
-The experience is something to cherish. I got a sense of accomplishment and great satisfaction in seeing my first PC start up for the first time.
-The knowledge you gain from the assembly can help you in trouble shooting in case something goes wrong... Instead of having to send the whole thing out to the company and waiting a very long time to get it back, you can fix it yourself and get it working in a much shorter time.
If you are considering assembling your first PC, I suggest buying online from Newegg.com. It's the only place i trust for my computer parts.
*looks into the camera*
That's Newegg.com.
*Newegg logo pans across the screen*
*smile*
*glint*
I think you can make them last a lot longer when you build them yourself plus as you mentioned, it's easy to troubleshoot issues. Luckily in college I had a friend who was a computer engineer and he helped me keep mine upgraded. This is how I was able to make it from 2001-2008 on the same PC, haha. The computer is on it's original hard drive, but I think we changed the processor, upgraded the video card a couple of times and expanded the memory as much as possible. It had finally just reached it's limit.
The cool thing about the refurb I got is they took everything off of it software wise so really the only thing that came on it was Windows XP with SP3 and anti-virus software. So now I can load it up with all sorts of games and fun stuff

Dual Core vs Quad Core:<ul type="square">[*]For most people's computer usage, they don't even need dual core. You never need quad core, although if you're a heavy multitasker you won't notice as much slowdown.[*]Many games (including CoX) don't perform any better on a multicore system than a single core system.[*]What price are you looking for? Dual core processors are cheaper and perform just as well for almost all computer users; quad cores will have increased performance but only in niche situations.
AMD vs Intel:<ul type="square">[*]When the choices were Pentium 4 vs AMD64, AMD had the clear advantage - they were not only faster, but ran cooler and cost less as well.[*]Intel processors from Core 2 Duo and newer are generally faster at the same clock speed compared to AMD processors, but AMD will top Intel in certain tasks.[*]AMD processors are less expensive than Intel processors for approximately the same level of performance.[*]At the top end, Intel is outperforming AMD. Ever since they abandoned the Pentium 4 architecture they've been more innovative as well.
Prebuilt vs Do-it-yourself:<ul type="square">[*]At the low end, prebuilt is much less expensive, but you don't know how upgradeable the system will be.[*]Building it yourself lets you control what parts go in it, but provides some concerns with customer service and support (as in, there is often little to none).[*]At the high end of performance, building it yourself is cheaper than a prebuilt system.
Vista vs XP:<ul type="square">[*]I personally don't like Vista, but yes, it will perform "fine".[*]Vista has a much larger "footprint" in memory, which means that you have less resources available for the programs you want the OS to run.[*]Many people have gotten used to where things are in XP; things have been moved quite a bit in Vista. It's like going from XP to KDE Linux - things seem familiar, but not everything is where you think it should be.[*]Micro$oft is actively trying to push XP out so that people buy the new OS. This means less support for newer hardware in XP and many times prebuilt systems don't even supply drivers for XP at all.
Graphics cards:<ul type="square">[*]nVidia is supported better than ATI currently in CoX (there's a whole thread on ATI issues).[*]Depending on the resolution you run the game at and what settings you're running on, a mid-grade card will likely perform just fine.[*]I personally use an nVidia 8800 GTX w/768MB of memory and it's pure overkill, but I get (vertical sync-capped) 60 fps in almost every situation in the game, while running with advanced graphics settings which are set higher than the "very high" settings default to at 1920x1200 resolution.[*]If you spend more than $200 on a graphics card, you're paying for "new and shiny" instead of performance.[*]Video processor speed and memory bandwidth is more important than amount of memory. A high end, newer generation 256MB card will outperform an older, slower 1GB card.
As an afterthough don't skimp and get one of those $20-30 power supplies. A failing power supply can show up as a lot of seemingly unrelated problems, and a friend ordered one online because it was cheap and it exploded (literally - flame shooting out the back of the case) on the first day, taking the motherboard with it.

Well I finished this little guy for my BF's daughter.
Pony 1
Pony 2
Started another one for my boss' grandson. Gonna be a baby blue body with green accents.
Also started this guy for my Nephew.
Turtle
I have a scarf I'm half done with and then I have some Angel Bell ornaments I need to work on for my BF and then a giraffe I am making for the daughter of a friend at work.
I will also be making Mrs. OSHA a unicorn version of the horsey in Pink and white.
See, now you're going to have her saying she wants a pony again.

This is going to be a purely gaming rig.
I will have my current computer to do all of my coursework etc. on.
I usually run at least one window open with gmail chat, facebook, streaming radio or a podcast for class, and AIM all in the background.
I play in windowed mode.
I just got this monitor so I can run at high res settings etc.
I'm currently only on a single core processor.
I was looking at this video card.
In regards to everything else I have no clue what to get/do.

Thanks :-)
I really am having fun crocheting all of this stuff for everyone :-)
Satisfies my crafting beast and lets me give the stuff away so I don't have to fill my house up with it all!
Yup. I make baby quilts as gifts and sometimes other things because it lets me work with textures and colors I wouldn't have chosen for myself and also because I can then give it away. Not that I don't want to hoard the baby quilts sometimes, but they need to go out into the world to be drooled on and chewed on and washed and loved to shreds.
