Ten Ton Hammer Shows Exclusive Issue 13 Video!

Okay, I watched the video twice now and these are my thoughts...

(1) Not too keen on the 4th Wall Tron-like discussion. "My user"? Please!

(2) What are the characters doing leaving their day jobs to go meet in Pocket D? Wouldn't "their users" be upset that their alts are changing jobs on them? If I log out my alts in one place, I expect them to be there when I log back in with them.

(3) I'm sorry but the changes in costumes are not representative of real game-play. There are no special effects with costume changes, unless you can find some way to tie it into an inspiration with a macro. This is something that I wish we could select normally, though, so maybe at some point the devs will act on it.

(4) I have to ask: who REALLY gets their jollies fighting the Vahzilok to the point where they will only fight them? I hate having to deal with those puke-machines almost as much as I hate cave missions and sewer missions.

(5) The discussion was rather corny. I know it was designed to go over some of the major changes in i13 but showing is sometimes better than telling. Just watch Samuraiko's "What's Past is Prologue" video on YouTube to see a good example of this.

Finally... although I have to give Ten Ton Hammer points for taking the time to come up with a new video, which is something that I myself would love to do if I could get the time, I still think it could have been improved.

And let me take this time to also join in with the request that NCS please put Samuraiko/Dark Respite/Michelle on retainer for doing these videos. I have found her work to be superb.

Compared to Dark_Respite's I13 vid... this was really amateur, guys. Shoot, compared to the VEAT teaser, this was really amateur.

Hire Michelle, already.

....that wasn't at all pleasant. I'd rather re-watch 'time to start' for the eleventeenth time.

Holy crap! You guys are a tough audience.

Everyone's a critic. If I'd been the one who made that video, I'd certainly never step foot in these forums. You're all being unnecessarily harsh.

The guy (or gal) who was in charge of getting this video done, had a tall order to deliver. Take every new feature in issue 13 and describe it within a three or four minute video, with only three new characters that the audience is largely unfamiliar with and oh by the way you have NO time to get the audience familiar with them. Hit all the talking points and you're done. We also want characterization and a resemblance of plot structure but you have NO time in which to actually do any of that, because it's more important to get ALL the talking points in. Utilize machinima tactics and try to be hip. You have until two weeks ago last Thursday to finish this. Good luck. This tape will self-destruct yadda yadda yadda.

Things like the use of "my user" were shortcuts because the people behind this did not have an hour of exposition to explain these characters' intricate back stories. They did not have time to explain to new players the difference between character and player, or the intracultural intricacies of ICly vs OOCly speak. You say that's breaking the fourth wall. Hate to break it to you diehard roleplayers who insist on ((putting everything inside parentheses)) but to the rest of us? You're pounding your heads on the fourth wall. Your heads are bloody stumps with that fourth wall ((I'm not kidding. Get over yourselves)).

The people behind this vid needed the audience to understand the three characters are toons that players like the viewer play. Tron or no, it was a good choice in terms of conveying to an audience what's going on. This speaks to newcomer to the concept as well as veteran to the game. It's reaching a wide audience that way in a VERY short period of time.

More shortcuts were in developing a love triangle of sorts between the three characters. Trite and cliche and forced, but pretty much all the creative minds had to work with. You can't have intimate friendships with different multiple levels. You gotta talk about how Day Jobs work, multiple builds, leveling pacts, shields, pain domination and new Cimerora missions. We don't have time to know how these three characters are related, so shorthand character development is necessary.

Two guys vying for a lady's affections and she's mostly oblivious or uninterested, then the two guys do that male bonding thing over vomit in a sewer. This coulda been a beer commercial! In fact, in some countries it already is! I'm sure you think you could do better but either put up or shut up. Whoever you are, standing on your lofty perch telling everyone how lame you think this video was, do me a favor and admit you're full of hot air and got nothing to back up your claims.

You're full of it. Don't like hearing me say that? Make a better video and PROVE ME WRONG.

I have been wanting someone to take CoH and create a series that puts Red Vs Blue to shame. Talk about breaking the fourth wall - that's ALL RVB did and they were AWESOME! If you can't or are too lazy to try, shut the funk up. Considering what the people behind this thing had to work with? Excellent job. Will this become a viral video that gets two million hits on YouTube? Don't hold your breath. Five stars on the video. Joe Bob says check it out.

I wouldn't go so far as to say mine are "better" (what IS "better" anyway? write on one side of the page only), but I've done a couple of CoX videos (not including the ones YouTube's pulled down). Does then entitle me to criticize?

With all due respect, please remember two very important things:

1) EVERYONE is entitled to his or her opinion, regardless of talent, output, etc (or lack thereof)
2) Having said opinion does NOT automatically entitle you to being taken seriously

Also, based on your arguments, I might feel perfectly justified in telling you that were you to watch MY videos and not like them for whatever reason (and there are people who don't), YOUR opinion would be considered invalid unless you made a video yourself.

(If you have made one, incidentally, please don't forget to post its link in the Fan Videos thread in the Multi-Media section of the forums.)

Your notion of what an 'ideal' CoX ad may clash wildly with the notions of others. I think there's more than enough room for advertising this game to accommodate everyone. Look at the new Mac ads that StoneFalcon created, for example! Fourth wall? What fourth wall? Oh you mean that pile of rubble at our feet...

Someone already did. This is why a lot of us are saying "Hire Michelle". I'm of the opinion that her vid introduced nearly all of the major upgrades within I13, better than the "official" teaser.

Reactions to both vids will of course vary.
