Since this post was necro'd, what on earth was this ever for anyway other than to garner interest in the Rikti invasion?
Tech Support Rule #1 - They will lie to you. Usually intentionally.
I think that was it, just to get everyone excited and folks on the same page for the Rikti Invasion.
I suspect the Devs wanted more folks to get mass teams together and try and tackle the Drops Ships and such as well.
It was also for the rp forums, they had lots of interactive story telling there.
