All-New Guide to running CoH/CoV on a Mac

I hate to bug you, but can you be a little more explicit about the 'annoying yet workable bugs'. I'm definitely tempted, but I'd like to be sure the money is put to use. Ugh, I have to get the pro version so it's even more then I thought.

You don't need the PRO version, there's a seperate one called Crossover Gaming 7.1. There is a 30-day demo you can download.

The bugs I've seen are as follows: The full-screen mode isn't full screen (you can see the menu bar and the X-Window frame), FSAA doesn't work (it breaks alpha channel) and the game can freeze when you're quitting or in high-lag zones like Grandville.

I dl'd the trial verison of Crossover ... I'd appreciate some input from anyone who has successfully installed COX. I dl'd the game client updater and ran it (under crossover, which I think created a pseudo-"C drive" in one of its default "bottles") but I'm not sure I did the install right.

Now when I run COX I get an error saying something like "GL_Vertex" not supported video driver ...

Exact Quote: "You card or driver doesn't support GL_NV_vertex_program"

this doesn't happen when I run the version I installed on my Vista installation on the same MacBook pro.

Help? Thx.

That error is normal, you can dismiss it and the game will run anyway. It just means the emulated graphics system doesn't support some instruction CoH uses, it can work around it usually.

Make sure you're using Crossover GAMING, and not Crossover or Crossover Pro.

The game still launches, then I can get to the character selection screen, but when I log in I usually crash as soon as the zone loads. Or right afterwards. Like, I'll zone in, and then as soon as I start to move, or if I move the trays around, it crashes. Is it a graphics-setting issue?

I am using an application called "CrossOver Games" so I imagine that's the right one you're talking about.

Any tips on doing the install "properly"?

I'm trying to run CoV/CoH on a Macbook (regular) using CrossOver games and I get this error:

You card or driver doesn't support GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array

After this, if I choose to continue, I can hear the sounds from the game, and there's a cursor (albeit a mangled one), but the screen is simply black.

Am I safe to assume this is a driver issue? I'm having a lot of trouble finding the right drivers and installing it since I'm using CrossOver Games (7.0).

Unfortunately for me the Boot Camp route is not an option.

I have an Intel GMA 950 chipset graphics on my Macbook.

Can anybody offer a workaround or help on how I can get CoH running?

Thank you!

Note: CrossOver or Codeweaver, one of them (maybe they're the same) is now supporting COX, do a search and there is a link to where they're helping users through these problems...good news I think.

I've seen several users say they are using a regular macbook (not pro) to run COX through bootcamp and/or crossover. Is this really possible with the intel graphics?

I was looking into buying a mac and was going to go with the iMac for its capabilities but I really like the macbook (just not the pro) and would love to be able to get it instead of the much more expensive iMac desktop.

If it would actually play the game decently, with my employer's discount I can get a good macbook for about $1000, where a iMac would be around $2300.

Let me know your opinions on whether the macbook could handle COX and if I'd actually be able to play the game without horrible problems (I don't care if I'd have to play on recommended settings, I just don't want it to lock up or not work at all).

I am, but with minimal particle FX, and other relatively low graphics. I can play it, but it's night & day versus my gaming PC. Then again, when my fiance is playing EQ2, it's nice to play on my MacBook (non pro) instead of nothing at all.

I have Crossover gaming on my Macbook. If you have the newest Macbook, I'd say don't bother. Players and NPCs are rendered almost invisible. It makes playing the game practically impossible.

At the very least, download the demo before shelling out the cash.

IMHO, the best option for running PC games is to get a PC. I've gotten CoX to run on a Mac, but the end result has always been more trouble for lesser quality than running it on a PC. And when I say "Get a PC", I _don't_ mean "Get a Mac and run boot camp".

Why not? Runs just fine on my GMA950 MacBook with XP SP2.

Get a Mac and run Windows. Why settle for a substandard computer system -all- the time? Switch to Windows for necessities like CoH and then back to the elegant Mac for the good stuff. CoH works great on a Mac. I have used it since Boot Camp came out with no problems.

Any ideas on how well CoH/V will run on a new macbook (announced today)?

I am really waffling between getting a macbook and a macbook pro, and CoH/V is a consideration. Obviously I know it will run, as CoH/V runs on a GMA950 macbook. Just trying to gauge how much of a difference the 9400M vs. the 9600GT will be..

I believe a Nvidia 8400 will run CoX but just not at the highest graphics point. I don't have the best graphics card in my older computer (and its ATI) but it plays the game nicely. Its a definite improvement over the old macbook.

This brings the baby macbook back into consideration when I buy my new computer (so many choices, damn you Apple!...lol)

I just got CrossOver Games, been running it on my first generation Intel iMac (2 GHZ Intel Core Dueo, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI Radeon X1600). My iMac is my main computer, so it regularly has a lot of programs running on it. It's not as snappy as my gaming PC (Intel Core Duo 1.86 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, nVideo 8600 GT, and probably most importantly no other programs running on it when I'm gaming), but it's usable. Wouldn't want to use it for a Hami or Mothership raid.
