The tennis balls surely sounded nicely upon the court, but the racket that decided to end its ballistic arc not far from the feet of Sis certainly did not, clattering noisily upon the rubbery grain as it came to a halt.
Of course, the racket itself hadn't anything special about it - the severed human arm that still clenched its fingers about the thing's grip, however, was truly something one didn't see every day.
The appendage looked to have been half-cut, half-torn above the elbow joint, the somewhat smooth mark of a hack having etched into the stump of bone a little. It was for all to see that the arm doubtlessly belonged to a woman, a rather slim one at that, and that the flesh and skin bore the bleached hue of death upon them. No blood came from the torn end either - this arm had been dead for quite some time, this was certain.
Oddly enough, however, there wasn't any evidence of rot or decay. Except for its deathly paleness and the fact that it wasn't currently attached to its owner, the arm looked and smelled perfectly fine, like it had never even begun to decompose.
"'ey, guys!" came a shout from the general direction of the rogue appendage's flight path, a man's voice that sounded very much like the stereotypical surfer fresh off the beach calling out, "Mind tossin' that back over here?"
The source of the voice was indeed a man, standing by a set of portable bleachers that had been drawn between three courts and the far fourth, blocking the view of said last court. Apparently, someone had been playing there - and somehow lost an arm in the process.
The man himself didn't seem too remarkable; at least not at first glance. He stood a little less than two meters tall and wore an ensemble suitable for outdoor activities - magnolia-white pants, tennis shoes of the same base shade, a Hawaiian shirt of blue and dotted with palms, and of course a nice set of shady sunglasses.
And that was where any semblance to 'normal' ended.
The man's hair fell long, almost to his shoulders, and carried the color of malachite; as did his eyebrows. His skin could at first have looked simply tan, but the distinctly copper hue couldn't be explained by simply that term, and the mask of gray cloth that hid his face from the nose down certainly wasn't the general fashion trend either.
In addition, though the sunglasses hid his eyes completely, the cover blending nearly seamlessly into the mask below, even the shades couldn't cover the beginnings of three large scars dug deep into the right half of the face. They even extended partially across the man's forehead, the leftmost cutting just above that eyebrow...

His cheeks reddened slightly. Ian took to heart the teachings of his sensei, not to let your mind or sword to be swayed by anger, love or greed. His smile had about disappeared up until now. His face brightened a bit after the subject was changed. Yes, I did talk to Ed. He told me what he thinks is wrong but I dont have any way to confirm his assumptions
.well, not yet. Ian tossed Sis a racket then turned to Orchid whos posture had stiffened and her fist clenched.

Eh!? was all that Ian could utter at the severed arm that lay near Sis, his face now contorted in confusion and distaste.
Orchid saw the disjointed arm on a tennis racket that had been carried in Ian's load of rackets and heard the man in tennis whites, who she presumed to be it's owner. She stopped in mid-grab and let out a very girly "Ewwww!" before backing away toward where Kruth'T was examining his racket.
It wasn't so much that Orchid was repelled by dismemberment, she had seen and caused plenty of it on her 'not so good' nights patrolling the streets of Paragon City. It was more the idea of a wayward arm still attached to a piece of sporting equipment that made her shudder. "Aren't they supposed to clean the equipment before someone else uses it?" was all she managed to mutter to no one in particular.
It was a quirk of hers, left over from her time before her change into an undead being, that she was a touch germaphobic. "I mean really, it's like going into a gym and using equipment that hasn't been sanitized between those using it. That's just so gross!"
She suddenly felt the need for some disinfecting wipes before she touched anything in the area. Hiding a slight shiver she took out a bottle of antiseptic hand cleaner from her western styled utility belt and offered it around to anyone who might like to sanitize their hands from touching the rackets...

Ella slumped slightly. She was a memory loss patient, though her situation was much more complicated. She had a vague feeling of dealing with people that thought she was crazy before but the vague feeling slipped away again. She looked back to rejoining the train of the conversation.
She tossed her jacket to KruthT when he volunteered to sit this one out. Youll pick it up quickly she smiled at him.
When she turned back, everyone was looking at the racket and arm that landed.

"Much obliged." the masked man retorted, lazily snatching the arm from the air. He then turned to his left, where several figures could be seen approaching from behind the bleachers.
The first was doubtlessly the woman the arm belonged to, and there were several indicators - the first of course being her missing an arm. The second was the deathly pale tone of the skin on her other arm, and the third the eyeless sockets in her head. Instead of eyeballs, her visage carried simply a set of slightly luminescent, yellowish replacements that didn't look anything like human eyes.
In addition - as Kruth'T may well have noticed by now - the woman had no heartbeat. Her body was quite distinctly dead.
She'd dressed in a manner very much like the man she now accepter her arm back from, though her mask consisted of a drab white cloth that hung about her neck in the style of a 'reaper', as well as a hood in the same hue of white.
"I told you that Gave Knight got you." the man told her as if settling a bet, the undead woman grumblingly taking he arm back and holding its severed end to the stump in the short sleeve below her shoulder. Within moments, flesh and bone knitted together once more, and the arm sat firmly attached again.
"Fine, Mr. Cyber Eye." she huffed mockingly, testing the arm's motions to make sure everything was in order, "So you were right. This time. And it doesn't change anything."
Two more people had meanwhile come into view, and though all four of them stood more or less at the height of the average human, if just the casually dressed duo hadn't already appeared mismatched as could be, things now were surely so.
Though a man and a woman, the two wore roughly the same attire - clad completely in black, their clothing consisting of ordinarily cut pants, tank tops, and combat boots. The male part of the like-dressed duo also carried sunglasses, his hair in rather short, military fashion, while the female's long, silver strands fell elegantly upon the polished steel skin of her shoulders.
Yes, steel skin. In fact, everything about her was quite metallic. After all, she was a golem.
Indeed, the man in the same attire seemed the most human of the bunch, and he even had a heartbeat - an oddly low one, but at least it was there. In addition, he seemed the most amused, a wide grin upon his face as he crossed his arms while the other three discussed if the far-flung arm had won or lost the game just now.
Indeed, he didn't seem to care much at all, and so stepped over to the new arrivals to the tennis court.
"Sorry if Sal freaked you guys out any." he told Sis casually, but including the others in his explanation as well, "You've probably guessed by now, but she's kind of a lich. Parts come loose every now and then. Oh, and I'm Mitch..."

Kruth'T politely waived off Orchid's offer of disinfectant. Despite the surprise of his current infection, Kruth'T was fairly confident that there were few bacterial agents on earth capable of causing him harm. Mostly this was due to his knowledge that his bio-chemistry was different from the life forms that evolved on this planet. So it wasn't one of his concerns.
"Are those kind of injuries common in this game?" Kruth'T asked, with some concern. He hadn't noticed any cutting edges on his racket, so was wondering how someone might have lost a limb.
<Mitch> "Sorry if Sal freaked you guys out any." he told Sis casually, but including the others in his explanation as well, "You've probably guessed by now, but she's kind of a lich. Parts come loose every now and then. Oh, and I'm Mitch..."
"Hello Mitch, I'm Kruth'T."
Kruth'T was not really any closer to understanding what Sal was. It was then her lack of life sustaining bodily actions became apparent, to him at least. He could still hear her movements, but to him it was the equivalent of seeing a ghost.
Creepy, very creepy. How dose she do that? She's not alive, but she moving. I don't get it, how is she doing that? For some reason he found himself disturbed by the notion that their were people that he could see, but whose bodies made none of the traditional noises.
(to Orchid) "What's a litch?"
"What's a litch?" asked Kruth'T to Orchid.
"That, my interdimensional traveling friend, is a very interesting question. There are those who say a litch is a very powerful undead sorcerer or sorceress. Others suppose that they are the supernatural embodiment of powerful elves or humans trapped in a type of magical afterdeath. There are rumors of litch kings and litch queens, but I've never heard of anything being substantiated by any research. The data just doesn't seem to exist for some unknown reason... I personally don't have much experience with litches so my knowledge is a bit sketchy at best. Perhaps Mitch or Sal could enlighten us more on the subject?" replied Orchid.
Orchid finished with the disinfecting hand wipe and declined to take a racket after all. "And no, Kruth'T, it isn't a normal part of tennis to lose a limb in the process of playing. The idea is to hit with a racket a round rubber ball over a net where the opposing player can't return it with a hit to you or your partner."
Orchid knew this day was getting more interesting by the minute. First with the hopelessly inadequate explanation of tennis to Kruth'T and second with the incursion into a very unusual tennis match between the four 'people' of the tennis team who's game had been interrupted by the arm attached to the racket Ian had found.
For some unknown, but seemingly appropriate moment, scenes from Douglass Adams' 'Hitchhihker's Guide to the Galaxy' circled in Orchid's mind. She smiled and shrugged to Mitch and Sal.

"Pretty much." the military-esque Mitch smirked in support of Orchid's explanation, "And no, she just..."
"Didn't listen again." the masked man who'd first appeared completed the sentence, having made his way over now as well, "Grave Knight went spastic after she punched out its master, and the sword got her at the arm. Now she smacks the ball too hard, and off it goes."
"Oh, how rude of me." he performed a curt bow as the remainder of the group drifted away from the bleachers as well, "I don't remember my name, but feel free to call me Thermoplast - or just T. Everyone else does. You've met Mitch, that's Saledreya, and the chunk of metal's Mica."
"You be careful who you call a 'chunk'." the steel golem grinned in a sinister manner, wagging her finger at the man, "I've got my eye on you."
"I'm sure you do." he replied laxly, "And then of course there's Mor...Mord? Where'd you go?"
"Probably hiding again." Sal concluded with a snicker below her cloth, explaining to the others, "He's really shy, you must know."
"Am...am not." a stuttering voice gave answer, the man that was its source emerging from the bleachers and making his way over the few steps. Mordes stood garbed in just about the same outfit as Mica and Mitch, though he'd supplemented the ensemble with a long black trench coat and a large duster hat of equal hue.
Of course, the most distinguishing mark upon him was his skull. Just his skull - it had no skin, muscle, or flesh of any kind, being just bare bone. Like Sal and Mica, Mordes of course had no heartbeat, lacking internal organs in the first place, and Kruth'T could probably hear quite well that the man really was nothing more than a walking skeleton.
Though he kept his bony fingers within matte black gloves of leather, the eyeless sockets of his head were more than enough to give this away to just about anyone. In addition, there ran wrinkles through his tank top and pants that no human with flesh still attached to their bones could have supported, no matter how severe of a crash diet they'd undergone.
The creature beside him looked even stranger, but at least it was alive. It wasn't very large, perhaps the size of a sizeable dog, maybe a Great Dane. It was definitely some sort of reptilian, and a quadruped at that. Long and slim, it seemed reminiscent of a large predatory cat, at least in the way it moved; slowly setting one leg in front of the other, the three clawed toes on each digitigrade foot spreading to contact the ground and curling back somewhat once lifted off.
The skull was large and long, the characteristic shape of a sizeable carnivorous reptile unmistakable, and the mouthful of sharp teeth only added to the sense. A coat of falu red, finely interlocking scales covered the creature from head to toe to the tip of the long, whiplike tail, and even the large pair of wings that rose from the thing's back, membranes of robust, leathery hide stretched tightly between the supporting bones of the neatly folded-back appendages.
The eyes carried no pupils, only solid amber membranes that gave no clue what the creature looked at, nor if it even could see. The head surveying its surroundings with precision, however, gave this a rather large chance. Still, it didn't exactly seem outright dangerous, wearing a segmented silver collar about its neck that looked surprisingly high-tech, despite the large blue jewel embedded in its frontal joint.
"Um...hi." Mordes got out timidly as he stopped by the group, raising a hand in a semi-wave for a moment.
"Wow, you guys must be very charismatic." Thermoplast commented with a light chuckle, "You actually got more than two words out of him..."

While it was entirely possible that they too were just a rag-tag bunch of random acquaintances, she rather doubted it. And the lizard...thing...was not something one usually brought to a medical facility. Unless they were here for the Spa. Even then, she thought.
"Looks like we have more than enough people for doubles now." Sis picked up her racket again. "Should we try to organize teams, or just pick a court and sort it out as we go?"

Ella tossed her jacket aside and picked up some fuzzy balls that were lying on the court. She set one of the balls on her racket and with small taps bounced the ball into the air.
"Heads up" Once it was high enough she reached back and served the ball to Ian. It was a gentle lobe that with one bounce wound hop directly to his reach. She sent the next ball over to Sis similarly then the last ball over to Mitch.
She gave the racket a twirl "So who is in?"

"I think I'll just observer the first game." Kruth'T said. "It would help my understanding of this game." He then walked over to the bleachers, and took a seat on a ground level bench. He placed the racket beside him.
While he watched the collection of beings his tail gave a sight twitch, whenever his gaze fell on the litch, and her friends. A large part of him wanted to go to his room, bring back fifteen pieces of scanning equipment(that he 'forgot' to tell the Vanguard was in the escape pod), and learn how they managed to move, let a lone talk. Fortunately, or not (depending on your point of view), the was not an option for Kruth'T. Seeing as his people took a dim view of probing sentient life forms, without their permission. It still didn't keep him from wanting to.
Instead, he contented himself with taking mental notes, and observations on the game they were playing.
"I'm game." Mitch gave answer with a grin most wide, accented even further by his sunglasses, and began to bounce the ball upon the ground, "Goin' for doubles, right?"
"This ought to be amusing." Thermoplast remarked as he too stepped forward to join those already on the court. He turned for a moment to the others of his group, giving them a nod, "Next week, same time?"
"You know it." Mica replied, flashing a metallic smile. This quickly disappeared, however, as her gaze passed the scaled-down dragon, "Hey Mitch, who's gonna keep an eye on Nrev?"
"I...I can do that." Mordes fell in with a bit of a stutter before the other man could respond, "I'll just...I'll just be a little while."
"Most agreeable." Sal nodded, still twisting her arm about a bit, just to make sure everything had gone back together just the way it should, "Very well, we'll see you in a few."
With that, the lich snapped her fingers, and then Mica and she were gone in wisps of icy wind. A flurry of tiny ice crystals fluttered serenely in the air for a short time, then vanished as they melted once more, ending the sparkling dance of crystalline reflections.
The skeleton meanwhile silently took the strange animal over to the bleachers, then took a seat not far from Kruth'T. The reptilian creature turned back toward the courts for a moment, then lay down with its gaze still directed at them. An almost metallic rasp could be heard as its scales scraped along the bleachers for a moment, then fell silent as the being ceased to move significantly...

Orchid decided to sit in the bleachers behind Kruth'T. She had found a Japanese parasol and had opened it up, careful to keep from blocking the sun from the reptilian friends. She had studied that most reptilian creatures liked to lounge in the sun awhile and her parasol was there if they should desire some shade. Of course Orchid always needed shade and she looked a bit like a B-grade movie starlet in her sunglasses, hat, trenchcoat and stilletto boots.
Yes it was an odd collection of beings on the court today and Orchid was content to people watch. The game of tennis had always been a bit too 'tweedy' for her tastes just as horse races and speed boating had been. So Orchid was content in the shade of the parasol to quietly observe life and the game around her.
Sis caught the ball lobbed in her direction and stepped out onto the court. "I'm in. Are we picking teams, or is it just which side of the court we ended up on?" She glanced between Mitch and Ella questioningly. "Can always swap later."
As Orchid and Kruth'T announced they would watch, she nodded. She was terrible at tennis, but felt she could use the exercise. "Have to earn that soak," she muttered to herself.

[Sis] "I'm in. Are we picking teams, or is it just which side of the court we ended up on?"
Ella shrugged, it didnt matter to her. She just hoped that whomever she played with didnt get mad if she kept hitting the ball out. She stepped onto the court giving the pink racket a spin in her hand. She took a quick moment to stretch doing some quick textbook bends and then some lunges. Before standing upright again and setting herself to receive whomever server.
Im ready she smiled

Ian caught the ball served to him in a palm without looking because his gaze was on the strange party they had just met. It wasnt an intrusive stare, just a curious one, yet it contorted to a confused one when the lich and silver skinned woman vanished in a swirl of frosty air.
He continued to size up the group for a moment longer, eyes passing from the skeleton with the reptilian to Mitch and Thermoplast. As the group separated into groups, Ian let his gaze waiver. Heh, okay. Ill step out on this one and keep score or something. Does anyone have any special rules theyd like to use for this match? Ian moved to the end of the net off of the playing court and passed a smile to each group. Since Sis has the ball, I guess she can serve first.

It not intercepted, it looked like it would land just inside the line towards the backcourt.

"Yeah? Didn't you talk to Edward? It's really not my place to talk about it, but the whole thing was pretty shady. Then again, there's no telling what patients agree to or don't, especially if memory loss is a symptom." Sis shrugged it off, studying the tennis courts. "Man, someone left that a mess..."
As Ian went to fetch rackets, Sis scooped up a few tennis balls and began bouncing them on the ground. They made a nice *pock* sound as they hit the court. The court was warm and sunny, and she suddenly wished for her sunglasses. Putting the tennis balls at her feet, she flipped her hair over and then back, quickly tying it back up in a ponytail.

"I think I should sit out the first game." [Kruth'T] said with some regret. "At least observing you should clue me in on how to play this game."

"Sounds like we could probably get away with Doubles to start, if you're gonna sit out. That leaves me, Ella, Ian, and...Orchid, right?" Sis picked up one of the remaining rackets. "I'm terrible, I'll warn you right now. The last time I played was elementary school."
