Derek is now really shiny!!

This piece has 36 layers, and I'm using all of them. XD I use a lot of shading/highlight layers now, making the piece shinier, and with more depth!!

Hope you like!!

Hmmmm... I want you guys' opinion on this.

Does his skin make him look white, or black? It looks a bit strange..?

If anything, with the hair, he looks Hispanic...

I'm just talking about skin tone.

Gah! The shine! I've gone bliiiiiiiind!

That's, uh.. very.. very shiney, Derek. Like you laminated yourself. Oh, and it's drawn very well, too!

You don't want to use pure white for your highlights. Trying using the layer setting "screen" or something similar. For something like skin, you'd have to have an intense light source to get anywhere near that kind of highlight and the image would be washed out anyway.

Also, try to get your highlights to match the shape of the object. The hand for instance. The highlight is too blobby, it doesn't indicate any particular shape on the surface. The hair highlight is flat and round. It should have streaks to indicate the direction of the hair fibers. Overall, he looks hard, like a porcelain action figure.

Pure white should be used for things that are hard (eg. glass, metal), wet (highlights on the surface of the eye), and/or very slick or shiny (eg. leather, vinyl, etc.). And a little goes a long way.

The darks on the skin are desaturated and a bit coarse, so to me he looks like a caucasian who hasn't bathed in a while.

The shine on his skin is quite exaggerated.

His skin is what I want it to be, now. The original link is edited.

EDIT: My avatar is updated as well.

I agree with the suggestion to use screen or a lighter shade of your darkest hair color for the highlight.

You have come a long way!

I just checked out your gallery and faves, and I went searching on DA for other tutes you didn't have and might like to see...

May I suggest adding these to your links:

Poses Tutorial - just something quick about poses.

Simple-Dynamic Posing - this is a better pose tute, but you need that first one to understand the differences in this one.

Properties of Light - you'll have to download this one to see it.

Tone Shading this is a horribly laid out tutorial, but the technique on the far end looked interesting and easy to do...

Weird tute - but worth a look

I already do something close to the posing stuff. I'm pretty much happy with how I color now, I think. Thanks, though.

No worries, I apologize if my links seemed like I wanted you to change, they were just small suggestions for you to consider if not now, then maybe later...

I forgot to add this one, this is a mondo link with dozens of links on just drawing and related stuff.

Again I hope I didn't offend you.

Not offended at all.

The properties of light is actually pretty helpful.

I have yet to look at the link you just posted, but I will now.
