Derek: New and Improved!!! (My best yet!!)

I already do something close to the posing stuff. I'm pretty much happy with how I color now, I think. Thanks, though.
[/ QUOTE ]
It's ok to be happy with something, but as with everyone and everything, theres always room for improvement. There's no excuse for not trying to improve.
Honestly, the number of layers you use doesn't matter if you are using them properly. I understand you want it to be shiny, but I doubt you want every one of your pictures to look like the subject is doused in gloss.
You shouldn't brush off criticism. It's the best thing you can receive. If you only listen to compliments, you'll NEVER improve, and I dont mean to sound like an [censored], but you should keep trying to improve.
I highly suggest you look over those tutorials, try expanding yourself instead of listening to only the good. Compliments are a great motivating factor, and criticism is a great thing to receive, especially in the way people have given it to you. They're not being rude, they are being helpful.
Like I said, you do have a lot of room for improvement as everyone does -- so use that room and get better. Don't just "settle".
[/ QUOTE ]
Who the heck said I didn't listen to critiques? I was just saying I like that style of coloring, that doesn't mean I won't improve on it. Sheesh.
I like the way you color, too.

Thanks, lol XD
You know, I just looked at this again and it occured to me that his hand on the staff is really very large compared to the width of his body. So assuming the hand in the pocket is the same size, it would completely cover his crotch. Clicking on the larger image and looking more closely, there does indeed seem to be a large bulge there. Once you think about it, it's kinda suggestive. Is this something you intended?

No, it's not. The hand holding the staff is foreshortened, so it seems bigger than the other hand.
EDIT: Not foreshortened.. You know what I mean. It's closer to the viewer.
Derek just wants a girlfriend XD
Shaddup, Samoa. -_-
Well the pole appears to be vertical and the bottom is behind his foot. So based on what you've got going here, the hands would be pretty much on the same picture plane. The fact that the knuckles of the hand on the staff are turned towards the front means it's losing volume, not getting bigger.
Then you can look at the width of the wrist going into the pocket. The center mass of my hand is wider and longer than the width of my wrist. So assuming he has something close to human anatomy, that pocket would occupy the space where his groin would be. The size of the hand on the staff supports this. You could always give him a pocket or something off to the side to put the hand, but right now its burrowing towards the center mass of his body (i.e. his crotch).

His left foot is closer to us than the right foot, therefore the staff can go straight down.
But if the staff is going straight down, it means that the hand holding it is behind the foot as well. Doesn't address the crotch issue at all spatially. It would also seem kinda hazzardous for someone with a head that big to slide one foot forward and stick a pole behind it no? Won't he fall over? There isn't really any bend in the legs or waist to indicate the weight shifted forward.

That's anime proportions... Oh well, live and learn.
I'm debating how to color now... Should I do it shiny, or my old style...?
Honestly, I like the old style better. You do great eyes that are enough shiny for an amry of shiny people. It does look good full-body shine, but I personally perfer the olden way.
Also, "Crotch Dispute" is an incredibly funny thread title.

The proportions don't necessarily have anything to do with his hand landing on his crotch. You could easily bend the arm out a bit more and put a bulge on the side of his body to indicate that the hand is there in a pocket.
The majority of anime I saw when I was in Japan is near correct human proportions. The stuff that is really off tends to be aimed at younger children. Shooting for more realistic proportions would help you understand the body better and achieve more dynamic poses.

Tone down the white. Most importantly, have your highlights correspond to some light source. For example, look at the highlights on his eyes. There's one on the top to the side, one in the liddle of the eye, and then one at the bottom. Realistically speaking, that would indicate a lightsource in the air--up above somewhere, one right in front of him, and then another bright one below. But none of this agrees with the shading on his body, which is very dark, especially near the feet.

Okay, yeah, I want critiques, but this is a little too much. No offense, but can you please stop?
And I'm 12. I would be one of those "younger viewers". I happen to like this style, and I don't intend to change it anytime soon. Eyes are like that in this particular style. The head is that big. It's according to style, it's not supposed to be completely realistic. Think of it this way: Normal males don't have gigantic bulging muscles, and normal females don't have that kind of figure either. Rant over.

I think a blend of the two would be cool. I like the shine in certain places, especially the eyes and if you have effects, but the old simple coloring looked very nice, also. Mysterious Flame is very close to what I'm thinking of - Leaving the shines for accents, (ex: Skull eyes and fire and eyes) but just keeping it regularly lighted for other parts of the body (ex: pants, shirt, hood).

Hmm.. I think I know what I'll do, usually. I'll do the detailed shadows, but without most of the highlights. I might do the simplistic thing for some, as well.

Don't let anyone get you down D, I like your work and the style you have come into over time.
The new and improved piece is great, I like the shiny. Its made me realize that I could like something besides cake with 36 layers
[ QUOTE ]
Derek is now really shiny!!
This piece has 36 layers, and I'm using all of them. XD I use a lot of shading/highlight layers now, making the piece shinier, and with more depth!!
Hope you like!!
