A good idea is to make a chracter based on yourself. That way you can act like that character without thinking too much about RP itself.
I started out this way and am now...somewhat...on the way to making actual RP characters, so I probably wouldn't be the best mentor here. Just thought I'd throw out some random suggestions that might be helpful.

Thank you for your suggestion. I was thinking along those lines myself, but perhaps adding in a few quirks here and there. 
I'm really just hoping to get involed with a small group of RP'ers that I can group with often. One of which will hopefully help me along the way.

((I am thrilled with all the responses. Are most of you on Virtue? I understand that is the unofficial RP server. I am trying to get used to proper speaking and emotes still.

About: A sweet talker raised in the South, he always felt like he could see a part of the world that no other could see. Looking deep into other people and even deeper into himself, he has raised questions about life, love, and his purpose here. Throughout life he has learned to embrace the traits that set him apart from others. He has the ability talk his way into or out, of just about any situation. Some people believe its his use of words, but it goes much deeper than what is seen on the surface. While he his friendly to all, his motives are not always the best. However, when loyalty is established, it is never forgotten.
About a week ago he moved to Paragon to attend school at the ripe age of 24. He has started attending the University in town in order to learn how he might harness his abilites as well as pursue education in other areas.

Pardon the redundance, but names are personal things- we can give suggestions, but it's best if you build on whatever we give you and make it your own. For example, my character Lyden's name is a derivative of Lydian, a measure on some.. musical scale that someone else suggested.
Anyways, a smooth talker, huh? The.. Operator? The Faceman? The Ambassador? *leaves lots o' room for other people*

As for me, my home base is Protector. But there's a clump of us Board RPers who tend to stick together and follow each other from server to server, so most of us have toons on Virtue.

Nice bio. I got into RPing much the same way, having played WoW in the past. I had been on CoX much longer, but never RPd any characters... until I felt I couldn't do enough in WoW.

An idea for a name could be Negotiator, or Arbitrator, or Adjudicator, Ambassador, or Delegate.
In any case, good luck with him. I'm sad I can't volunteer myself to introduce you to RPing (I'm a recluse and misanthrope, and my schedule varies a lot), I'll be watching you with great interest.

((So, I created Southern Charmer last night. He is a lvl 7 mind/kin troller on Virtue. I had a couple of great conversations in Atlas, but found myself ooc most of the time on teams. I took extra note to read peoples descriptions and try to engage them if I could. I find I am having a hard time determining what dialect he will use.

Hal actually does not leave stains, but you must be careful to use only as directed by a doctor as side effects may include dizziness, nausea, and/or loss of consciousness.

Well, where are you? Right now, we (Hal, Essex, Khell, myself) play together on Protector the most, followed by Infinity and Liberty. Virtue kind of takes the 'sometimes' slot there.

I'm feeling quite shy about posting, but got the nerve to do so.
(( Hi ladies and gents. I am here to ask for help and perhaps a friendly guide/mentor. I recently started playing CoX about a month ago. Prior to CoX I played WoW for about a 9 months.))
I'm not sure why I always feel the need to give details. *shrugs*
(( Moving along, rp'ing has always interested...err...intrigued me. Just last night I met someone with a great character and she was kind enough to answer a few of my questions in regard to rp etiquette. I love the idea of creating a character and truly immersing myself in to role. However, it also makes me nervous as I have never done so before.
I just finished reading the "Idiots Guide to Roleplaying" -- great post by the way. While that shed some light on the subject, I can't help but feel I still have a lot to learn....and experience.))
*Takes a big breath*
(( So will someone be willing to take me under their wing? I do not have any characters made for RP yet, but I plan on making one this evening, most likely on Virtue. I live in the est. time zone and work M-F/ 8-6. I play most evenings for a few hours and many weekends.))
