Nice guide bro. 9/10 the -1 is because i have mcafee and i have no real problem with it. my computer runs faster than a T1 and was built for gaming but yes if your computer is a "hybrid", meaning its used by mom, dad the dog, you, your idiot sister and is used for taxes and etc then Mcafee may not be for you but if your computer was trained from day one to combat evil lag spikes and stuff then mcafee isnt that bad.

Great guide Billzzzzz. Very Informative and helpful.

Bill,

Another player directed me to something that helped tweak my high-speed connection somewhat. Here's the link:

SpeedGuide

The TCP/IP optmizer (on the left side - shortcuts) program tests the connection and can help tweak it for better performance. It will also handle whatever registry changes may be warranted by itself, taking the 'oops' factor out of the equation.

Very cool, DarkEther. Thanks for that. I'll try it out this weekend.

Start a new thread in the tech forum including dxdiag and hijackthis logs. One of us will find the cause. Instructions on getting those can be found in the Before You Post thread in the tech forum.

This actually helped a lot, I should have verified my files before logging into the game though. I crashed on entry after running Driver Cleaner and reinstalling the Nvidia drivers. However I also had gone into screen shots and deleted a ton of them.

I also recommend the free versions of AVG at the bottom of this page. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/5/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Norton was awful for my computer. The antivirus and firewall.

Thanks for posting this guide.

Apparently they are charging for it now. I bet a good google search could find someone downloading the free one though.

One little addition I personally use, I'm a stickler for an organized HDD, especially my OS disk so I run O and O Defrag
http://www.oo-software.com/home/en/d...t/oodefragpro/
if you decide to buy it:
http://shop.element5.com/product.html?pr...d0bfda97b56e875
the single user license can be found at the bottom of the page.
Note: DO NOT USE: clever cache or drive LED, useless resource eating junk.
oh, and read the help file very carefully before deciding which advanced defrag method to use.

Although it looks interesting, personally, I am against all the other defraggers out there.

Granted, it mostly comes from the standpoint of me not wanting to bother with a 3rd party app when the defrag in xp is "good enough."

A demonstration of complete and utter paranoia in terms of computing...

That said, I don't know if I should criticize or praise this guide.

On one hand, I know that not all of these tips here will generate results. Indeed, many of them will render your computer less secure or less user friendly without any noticeable benefit in terms of game performance. Which ones in particular require a reliable benchmark and a lot of spare time on your hands, but the results speak for themselves.

On the other hand, the 'better safe than sorry' motto isn't a bad one to have in terms of computing, especially if you're not tech savvy enough to know the difference between bloatware and stuff you need. On other words, paranoia is the one computing practice you can trust.

I do have one solid critique about this guide, and that is that it does nothing to tell you how to configure City of Heroes, itself.

That's why I have an ATI Settings Guide and a Rigs and Settings link in my sig. Nvidia users can seek out the poster jg0001.

{yes I'm really that broke atm}

is their a free version of Driver Cleaner that's safe?

::looks at Trend Micro scan thingy:: is it supposed to take a very long time to prepare? o_O

Some additions: Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition still exists, you can find it at http://free.grisoft.com

Also, some other 3rd-party defraggers can be found at:
http://www.raxco.com
http://www.diskeeper.com

You can get a free 30-day trial from either, Diskeeper supposedly has a "run-in-background-unnoticed" feature that'll defrag your HD on the fly without taking up too much CPU time (I never noticed a slowdown at least). As for why you'd want to try a 3rd-party defragger, on average the both of them are much, much faster than XP's builtin defragger. Great guide btw, Bill!

I haven't found a free driver cleaner. I have been planning to buy it for a while, but in the meantime have been using the old one. I'm concerned about this due to AMD changing ATI's Control Center as much as they did.

I don't use Trend Micro at all anymore. Their online scan has become bloated and buggy. Now all I use is AVG Free.

I found this great freeware defragger:
http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag
Heard that it's better than the builtin windows one, and hey, it's free. Runs faster than the Windows one and tells me more about what it's doing. Works for me.

Bill, check out the windows pre-fetch. I found turning this down to "2-boot" was helpful for my performance.

Nice catch. I don't think I've ever come across that before. Won't change much on my gaming rig since it's wiped so often and nothing gets installed to it, but for the workstation, heck yea.
