DO NOT photoshop the picture (minor cropping is ok).

How about "cropping, resizing, and gamma correction"? Since the screenshots taken don't respect my gamma settings inside the game, and I think given discussion elsewhere (in this thread and others), that's at least wide-spread, if not universal. And resizing is required to meet max size for people running at larger. None of those substantially alter the picture, and all of them are generally allowed in photo contests, so...

One drawback of the internet is how it has trained so many people to think that one day is a long time.

OK, who objects to allowing Gamma/Brightness correction?

Anyone care to argue why this shouldn't be allowed?

Bueller?

i see no reason that gamma/brightness cannot be changed, what does it affect? nothing significant. So u didnt get perfect lighting in your shot, why not be able to change it.

... you know, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for clarification of what to do if you're running at a larger size or you have to gamma correct in-game but the screenshots don't take that into account. It's not 'gaming the rules', it's trying to figure out if people are going to have to exclude themselves because the rules don't allow for these things.

Or, I suppose, enter a non-optimal screenshot because of the gamma or change their size in game temporarily. The former affects me (to the point that I find my unaltered screenshots muddy and unpleasant) and the latter does not, but the latter affects a lot of people, so I figured consolidating them would be a good idea.

Sorry I said anything, though, if you find it so annoying.

<shrug> Simple is rarely fair. This is NOT a contest with a major prize, though, so you don't have to be too fair.

Changing brightness/gamma sounds great to me. IrfanView can do that just fine and it's a free program.

No, you're missing my point (or perhaps you never saw the threads for these types of contests before).

*I* totally agree with you. And yes, if I'd thought of it in advance, I probably would have mentioned it.

But if I "change" the rules now, inevitably some of the 50 or so people who have already submitted will go "AHHH! You've changed the rules! My entry sucks! Can I reenter?" which isn't a huge deal, but does mean a lot of unecessary work for me.

It's not that I mind the questions (hey, I like to think I do my best to answer/clear up as much as I can - y'know, like at 11:30 on a Tuesday night) - it's that I both want the best entries AND to make it as fair to people as I can.

And the "not a big prize" option unfortunately doesn't mean anything, because someone always hates me/the contest/the rules/the prize, no matter what I do.

And because of that, I'm allowed to take the very, very occasional cheap shot.

(BTW, this isn't a "woe is me post." I do these because I like to. And I do try to refine them every time. I'm not going to make a decision right now until the morning, and see what other replies people have made to the suggestion.

AND if I "change" the rule to allow gamma, then yes you can resubmit if your picture is 'teh suck.' But don't abuse that, or me. Please.

Fair?

cheers,
Arctic Sun

<. .> Go to sleep!

(err, what I meant to say is)

<o_O> Honestly, that's more than fair! I really hope I can get some good shots so I can pick one to submit soon >< I'm having bad luck atm <-.->;

Okay, fair enough.

ETA: And I, at least, appreciate the contests. I keep missing the deadlines so I really want to enter this time, especially since I have an idea what I want to do.

I recognize all the inv and ss stuff, but what's that other toggle?

I believe that is Tough from the Fighting Pool.

Yep, that is indeed tough. My inv tank is clinging on to at least having max s/l resist.

Just got my screenshot sent to you.

Chad Gulzow-Man's second account. 'Nuff said.

mmm...okay...I have a question.

You said we cannot edit the pictures at all....fine

But....what about screen capture from a demo edit?

Stretching I know...but I hadda ask....

<Cue dark and menacing music.>

OK, we discussed and at least this time gamma correction is NOT - I repeat, *not* - allowed.

We want this to be as simple for as many people as possible.

We only want you to crop and/or resize.

In other words: Take Picture, Check Size, Send In.

NOTE: If it is a good shot, but simply too dark, we *will* adjust the horizontal and the vertical (and the gamma, the brightness, the contrast, etc.) on our end.

I know it's not going to make everyone happy, but let's run through it this time and we'll see how to adjust the contest next time around.

cheers,
Arctic Sun

PS And *no* demo edits or demo records!!!

Arctic,

For future contests, to avoid problems and/or complaints about rules fairness and revisions, why not lay out the rules several days (or even a week) ahead of time?

Conducting the contests in this fashion would allow you to make rules revisions due to feedback and to correct errors. Any submissions sent before the official start could be accepted as is, or rejected outright, and any caterwauling brought on could be directed towards the rules posting.

While this would not eliminate all detractors or complaints, it should go a long way towards reducing those problems you always attract.

And many thanks for the fun contests you're dreaming up!
