Mob Vs Spawn
1) I'm sure this will be flamed, though I do not give a [censored]
2) people will still use the term wrong, but at least I tried to help literacy
3) this bothers other people as well, so :P
Although I agree with you, you're wrong.
In game lingo, MOB stands for Mobile OBject
Remember back in the day when the enemies were stick figures, or even bouncing squares? Those were MOBs.
That said, I never call a single enemy a mob. I call them enemies, or baddies. For me, a spawn is the term used to describe the normal amount of enemies in a single group that are generated for your character, if solo, or your team.
So, for me, stating:
"I had three spawns of baddies in that room"
would be correct.
Be well, people of CoH.

Billz FTW
and by definition, "spawn" is very broad in how it is defined....having something like 6 or 7 completely DIFFERENT definitions. I can deal with spawn 1, spawn 2...etc etc....I call them spawns or baddies or the like...
Mob is something that is pretty solid in definition, and while having maybe 5 definitions, there are a couple of them that relate to the other....
Yeah but in this context he is talking about the "mob" being used to describe each spawn using a sort of "gamer speak" based on Moveable OBject. I was once told it stood for "monster or beast". *Shrugs*
Not that big a deal really. I was wondering the same thing when I first started playing RPG's (no idea how long you've been playing). I remember thinking "why are they calling one monster a mob?".
I've been playing CoH for a lil over a year now, but only recently has the term been used in such excess....
There's got to be an "acronym dictionary for gamers" or the like somewhere. If not, someone needs to make one and sticky it!
please do!
but for now, this is my guide I've made, and my first one...so until we get a MOB = Mobile OBject Guide, then I'm gonna refer everyone to my literacy guide for Mob

The problem is that you have simply made an absolute, unequivocal declaration that it is "wrong" and an issue of "literacy" without regard to the context of the industry in which the term is being used. You are talking about using these terms "correctly" but in the end it is actually you who are in fact "wrong".
If you were out in the street and talking to someone about a mob, then everyone would understand that you were talking about a group rather than an individual. In MMORPGs (every one of them), however, "mob" has always, from the beginning, meant a "single" entity...and in fact stands for Mobile Object, which has been mentioned already.
The fact that you or someone else doesn't know that or doesn't like that, doesn't change it. As a technical writer, I know that some people are actually confused by some industries' references to "male" and "female" parts. But, that is the proper terminology and someone who doesn't like it or doesn't know any better isn't going to change it. And them saying "that's an inanimate object...it can't be male or female" doesn't make them right. It is, in fact, a "male" or "female" part as defined within the context of that industry.
In MMORPGs, a "mob" is a single enemy, critter, or the like. "Spawn" is used to describe one or more "mobs" or objects generated by the game, and which are usually attached to or associated with each other as a group. A spawn could be an individual mob or a group of mobs. In CoH a spawn could be one minion, one boss, a glowie, a crate, 16 minions, or any other combination that CoH allows in a single associated group of objects, entities or mobs.
I'd want to know what your source(s) for these definitions is/are and how much effort you put into finding them-then and only then will I accept such a universalism. There are a rare few dictionaries that would really give you any useful definitions and background information and to my knowledge none of the ones on the internet is one of them. Not flaming you, I just want to know where you came up with these strict definitions. I am probably going to look the word mob up in a dictionary myself and see what I can find. A hint: if it doesn't have detailed word origins and the translated definitions of those then don't bother with it. THAT is MY literary contribution for the day-thank you and good hunting. Oh and please NEVER say this: orientated. It isn't a word. Oriented, or an orientation is correct. Just throwing that out there.

Hate to break it to you...but orientated is, in fact, a word:
Merriam-Webster
Dictionary.com
Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary
v. o·ri·en·tat·ed, o·ri·en·tat·ing, o·ri·en·tates
v. tr.
To orient: He... stood for a moment, orientating himself exactly in the light of his knowledge (John le Carré).
v. intr.
To face or turn to the east.
aye...it is indeed a word...

I concur.
A "spawn" contains some number of "MOBs" (usually lowercased) in it.
Heroes on Infinity, Virtue, Freedom and Pinnacle.
Villains on Virtue.
Over 5000 hours of playtime
49 or so characters; average level 30; 25 levels of PL total across these characters
