True Role Playing
There are plenty of Soldier and Gangster RP's on our machine, plus a lot of RPed other types. Try Sibling some time, you never know whether Cliff or Angela will be the dominant personality (unless it's a bad fight, then Cliff is always on the line). Or Almira, no Elizabethan English, just a Lady many centuries old, placed into a willing, younger body that knows all things good come to those who do good.
Oh, and there are plenty of Soldiers in the real world that don't act like soldiers, plenty of police you would never recognize out of uniform by their actions. Molds don't fit the real world, so they certainly don't fit RP. Look at the mid-60's Marvel Black Knight: had the whole armor thing, flying steed, jousting deal, but was actually some 20 year old in his ancestor's gear, definitely didn't speak like a knight.
MentalStorm pulls quite a trick; took me a second to figure out whether to post that I totally disagree with him, or totally agree.
What he describes is, primarily, moronic. It's such bad roleplay that calling or examining it as roleplay is just mistaken in the first place, the same way discussing the ford pinto as a performance car is mistaken.
Also, it's just flat out wrong to suppose that all or even most RP is like that. Anecdote proves nothing, but speaking of soldiers, I know a guy who RPs an immortal roman legionnaire, another who RPs a mentally defective semihuman mutant with a twisted childhood, and I myself RP, among some of the sheer stand-out-ish characters I have, a manic-depressive antiwar German expatriate intellectual newspaper columnist based on a character by Herman Hesse (whose estate will be suing cryptic momentarily), a mystical tree-spirit (real creative, I know), a cranky modern girl-teenager-esque rebel from Rularuu Wisp society... and, I dunno. Tons of others. Altitis, is bad.

Personaly I'm not a role player and will never be one either. I don't mind role players in most games but in this one it just really annoys me because it just a bunch of guys with medieval armor talking in Shakespearian language (which is ALWAYS butchered because they don't know how to truly speak it). What I wanna know is that why someone doesn't role play as a gangster or a soldier. Enough of this crap, lets get some true role playing or none at all.

Uh, actually, I've never seen a group like that for the entire time I've RPed in CoH, since launch.
The closest I know of is a half-elf who is obsessed with pop-culture references. Not very close at all.

i met this dude one time RPing as an alien..his name was K'ol and he was from the planet Traxis!!! rofl...bah i laugh at RPers...not that theres anything wrong with it...i just find it funny. RPers can take things way too far though...like this one dude said he was a villian but he was killing hellions for "practice" i teamed with him and he kept on calling me not my heroes name but just "hero" told me i was foolish and stupid and that one day he would destroy all of us....my [censored]..
What I'm wondering is, why are you such a concerned bystander.

I don't like football, and I certainly wouldn't tell a football player how to play the game. If you wish to improve the situation, you must be a part of the situation.
To RP, or not to RP....that is the question....
(not meant to further enrage your high Shakespearian standards..)
p.s. Most RP that goes on between players is done within the Team Chat system, or Tells....as not to interfere with anyone elses game playing style.
EDIT: To the poster above....A true RP'er would not attempt to RP with someone not into it. He was probably insane and not really roleplaying at all. Lol.
Hey Thang,
That was US! And we are not insane, but fitting two minds in here gets cramped. Have to let out the bad thoughts somewhere.
So, who RP's anyway?
To some extent I disagree with SweetThang (I mean, come on. Let's not all just agree! That's so weak!)
When RPing in proximity, I RP in local and do OOC in tells. I'll also RP phonecalls in tells, and RP in team channel when on missions.
Moreover, I definitely apply the assumption that people are basically interested in RP, since this is an MMORPG.
Mind you, I'm not about to harangue somebody with RP who's not into it, and I'm not so dense that they have to come out and tell me to quit RPing at them, normally.
However, it would be wildly unreasonable to ask someone to stop RPing in local, or to have an expectation that it won't be done. I would be more reasonable by far to object to people making clearly OOC remarks in local.

This absolutely astounds me...how an avowed non-RP'er can even start a thread entitled "True Roleplaying" boggles the mind. Give me a break. If you don't RP, that's perfectly fine. You don't have to, and in fact, I fully support your right to turn your nose up at any and all intimations of roleplay. HOWEVER...I fully agree with Sweet Thang...if you don't play football, don't go telling a football player how to play the game. If you're NOT a roleplayer, and you NEVER WILL BE a roleplayer...for the love of the gods, DON'T tell me how to roleplay. I'm not even gonna try to sugarcoat this.
If you insist on making noise about something you evidently barely comprehend, do what another poster (was it Thang again? Sorry, can't remember ) suggested and be a part of the solution. Want to see roleplayed gangsters/soldiers? Logic suggests...shut up and do it.
Oh, and my wife has volunteered her services to beat you about the head and breasts with iambic pentameter anytime you feel the need.
So there.

I've not seen ANYONE talking shakespearean.. infact I've never even seen a roleplayer playing as a night, I've seen RP renditions of classic heroes in COH, Ganagsters, Soldiers, and even a Super Group that consists of a bunch of semi-hostile aliens who are only cleaning up crime in paragon so that there own armies can take over the city that much easier when they arrive to invade- but shakespearean speaking armored guys??? Never seen that so far...
There is no true way of RPing, grasshoppah...
Besides, I'm in a supergroup that doesn't count on how good you RP, more like how well you fit in. As long as you don't fight with others, you are in. We do mostly casual RPs, but we DO RP a lot. Even have a one-night-a-week kinda thing.
The thing is, there is no true way to roleplay. If you offend people OOC as well as IC though, then you should be spanked. Hard.
EDIT: Forgot to add in something. Knights don't always speak in thees and thous, but some do. But if the player don't even know how to speak in that, then they should not even try it. Besides, most knights don't do that anyway. They're too busy fighting and practicing manners to care about speaking properly.
EDIT AGAIN: I've seen some people who RP as soldiers, but gangsters? Well, I've seen some Tsoo, but most people don't really make em. I've given some thought but I'm full up on 8 slots on my main play server.
I have a Jawa though, does that count?
Golden Patriot does not say "Thee and thou" He says "Unit online! Greetings Hero Class Citizens, this unit is identified as Golden Patriot". And do not tell Golden Patriot how to roleplay, or he'll give you an energy-filled fistfull of JUSTICE!!

It isn't, at least from what I can tell. The box bills CoH as a Massively Multiplayer Online Game. Obviously the developers expect and condone roleplaying, hence this forum... but I don't think CoH is defined as an RPG by the creators.

Metaforces is an entire Super group of soldiers. All natural AR blasters with no super freaky powers or anything. We all roleplay soldiers. Gangsters aren't really good guys....
We even do the whole "yes sir" and reporting in to the Meta's that we work with. We're brave, and we incur debt in the name of saving our Metas. And we never leave a Meta behind.
Plus, we're like, real modern day city camo, not like 1940s olive drab and stuff.
I agree with everyone here.. I've seen plenty of non medeival themed RP. Not to give the girl too many shoutouts, but Sibling is one of the better examples of hero rp I've come across.
Personally I've got 2 heroes I rp that I'm proud of: Augustine and Royal Falcon.
Augustine is a mutant who used to work for the vatican (to repent for a past sin) and wound up working with Iron Justice (supergroup). Very religious, a wondering monk of sorts
Royal Falcon is a newer, younger hero. Rich boy gone vigilante simply out of desire and financial ability. He's got a penchant for the ladies and that biting hero sense of humor we all have come to know and love.
That's pretty brief summaries, but an example none the less... I still rp on a mud with a medeival setting and WE don't use butchered shakespearian english, so I can't imagine why (unless for humor's sake) anyone would use it here without good reason.
I've seen lots of gangsters (gangstas) and soldiers on Virtue, and even on Triumph sometimes.
