Quote:my brother's ss/shield brute has 44.9% melee defense, 40% ranged defense, and 36% aoe defense with toggles draining him at only .59 EPS. his recovery rate? 3.57 EPS. good endurance there..ok, so I got my SS/Shield up to around 37 and he is an outrageous end hog. I got stamina but that doesn't seem to help at all. I don't even have hasten, so I can already see the rage crash and the hasten crash making it even more of a pain in the [censored].
I normally tend not to IO my characters until I hit 50. I like to get to 50, then use a respec and spec the powers and slots I want for 50, then IO him all out in one swoop. So, without IO's, is there a way to make him not eat the entire blue bar before one fight even half over? -
Quote:you dont have to 'rely' on it, its there IF you need it. usually, i never need unstoppable on my ss/invul brute. its awesome the way it is. 70% smashing lethal resist, 50%+ to everything else except psi. i think it has 10% res to psi right now. also have 12% defense to psi. capped defense with a few baddies around me with 1900+ hp at all times and around 2800hp with DP on. with slow resists and drain resists to top it off, invul comes in very strong.I also voted out Unstoppable. The 3 mins of glory IS pretty good but the crash and long recharge made me not rely on it and id rather have a constant buff to resistance (passives) than an occasionnal god-then-crash-and-burn mode. If you get your defense to smashing/lethal to 35% with just 1 mob in range (wich is easy with IO's) you'll see your survivability greatly improved, even more with DM's -to-hit.
I wouldn't skip the resists, and if possible Tough/Weave/Combat Jumping (yes i know you took fly im just suggesting) can help also. Hope you enjoy /Inv
oh and did i mention my recovery rate is 4.08 EPS? and with toggles draining at only .57 EPS.. yea. powerful indeed -
pain MM's are the toughest to kill on villains. you can stall a duel and not die, but you prolly wont kill it either

Quote:its because if the brute actually does hit 100%, he transforms into a massive green monster.Fury provides a 2% increase per point up to 200% damage at full fury. Interesting enough, it is impossible to go past 90 fury in my testing even with stacking bosses or arch villains. This means we only cap at 180% damage.
Now Castle is probably going to say "Well Brutes are fairly balanced, maybe even overpowered, there is no need to fix this" -- It still is something that has always bugged me. If this is Castle's response, why not just make the cap of fury 90 but the bar appears full. (In other words, at 100 fury you get 180% damage increase but it still increases at the same ratio as before but can be capped... so its only changing visually)
They could also add something like hitting an enemy at full fury adds the words "SMASH" or something of that nature -
Quote:well those werent my words. and he explained his reasoning behind his thoughtsUsing this to say that MM's are the redside tankers as opposed to brutes is well, stupid. There is one word in there that is key, that word is WERE. Yes, when CoV was released that was the intention, that changed pretty quickly.
If built right, brutes have only marginally less survivability than tanks. MM's, while being very sturdy, are easily taken out in certain situations, the AoE one being a very good example.
This is misleading, and well, kinda silly. Everyone reading this knows what the OP is getting at. Redside, for a melee toon with the most survivability out of the box, that is the brute.
Is a brute a tank. No, it is not. It is not a scrapper either. It sits almost dead in between them. It has damage similar to a scrapper true, but it has the survivability POTENTIAL of a tank. It has taunt available to it, which means it can control aggro well. Now, if you are willing to go crazy with IOs, you can make them tougher than a tank in SOs, with crazy damage to boot.
MM's, while originally meant to be the aggro management AT of villains, did not become that. The key reason being, a whole lot of people just never learned how to play them correctly. The player base tried to push brutes into it. They had sets matching tanks moreso than matching scrappers, and had taunt, so of course they were tanks(this is said with sarcasm).
My first toon redside, which was the first I got to 40, then 50 redside, was a MM. Could I tank with him, hell yes, very easily. I mostly duo with my gf, her first Villain was a brute. We kind of traded off on tanking duty. She would jump the toughest one while I mauled the minions and lt's. If there was a type of mob that was particularly painful for her brute, I would stomp it. My second 50 was a brute, which I can quite easily tank with as well.
Villains plays differently than Heroes. Unfortunately, when villains was released, the player base tried to make a square peg fit a round hole. When it comes to tactics, Villains is offensively oriented, and Heroes defensively. This is the reason there was no traditional healer set when Villains was released. You kill it before it kills you. Some people still try to make the square peg fit in the round hole. -
Quote:these words came from CASTLE:MM are Jack of All trades they cant tank. When you tank you take the Alpha and keep the aggro. MM are build to take the Alpha but not build to keep the aggro. MM play the same 'ROLE' as scrappers off tank. when the brute dies the a good MM can setup and safe a total wipe. Just like a scrapper. Also the MM can debuff like a corr/defender, heal like them, damage like the ranged and melee classes. Now i did say that not all brutes are tanks , they can be setup like scrapper off-tank and massive damage 3% more then a scrapper can do on avg. Put in general terms and labels yes MM are not tanks but they can take the alpha, buff, debuff, heal, damage, off tank, and what ever labels are left. But to label a class as unique and veristal as the MM as tanks is narrow minded. LOL i need to start a MM. Now to simple label the brute as just tanks is narrow minded too but i did say that not all brutes tank. /EA, /FA, /Ele, and /SD are good non-tanking sets damage sets . /WB /inv are good middle or the road sets were /SR /SD and /SA are tankings sets. /SD is the more veristal as in it brings alot of extra damage. I may have missed a secoundary but you get the point
"I don't think Invulnerability needs help in PVE in the general case. PVP? Different story. Specific instances in PVE? Different story.
BTW, here's something I don't think has ever been publicly stated before, but is "true" -- Masterminds were meant to be the Tanker equivalents on the Villainside, not Brutes. Brutes tend to overperform compared to what the original design was, they were meant to be closer to scrappers than to tankers. That mindset has evolved quite a bit based on how players are actually playing, but that was the original idea. And, before things go south, no, we aren't planning any changes based on that. I just wanted to offer a bit of "behind the scenes" insight. "
There you go. Enjoy. -

I've noticed there are a lot of generic minded pvp'rs out there, with regards to powersets. Hey everyone lets make a spines/regen stalker or scrapper so we can be like everyone else!
Anyway I will address two things first: Spines/Regen. vs. DM/Ninjitsu - OK first of all, I have toxic res., then I have fear, then I have heal(s) then I have -acc stackable out the Yingyang and on top of that I have AOE protection and ranged protection, on top of that I have fear and psy resist also stackable, so Spines/Regen stalkers/scrappers any questions?
OK back to this thread, people are putting the hate out on Dark Melee, which i just dont understand. PvE is a simple joke on relentless. PvP you say something like stay away from this... OK something which I think is greatly underestimated is -acc (stacked) in combination with fear (control) and great defense. How you even gonna hit me? The reality, your not going to and if you do, I have all the Ninjitsu secondaries and two heals so I'm gonna turn the tables on you fast. Also I took a mu patron with two interupt time slots for END. Masterminds Im gonna caltrop/blind/flash your pets while I fear/pwn (you better ave dark miasma so its a challenge) you and you still are having trouble hitting me. If your gonna get technical I took Fitness, Leaping for acrobatics etc., hasten and specifically zapp as well.
I think that DM/NIN/{Mu (for the end)} is grossly underated because I have put it too the test and I have not had dmg problems. Anyway someone needed to say something, eventually ill make a DM/NIN stalker guide to PVP

i had a DM/ stalker attack me while i was fighting a Zeus Titan in WB. i still kept trying to kill him WHILE the stalker was trying to kill me on my scrapper. after i killed the Zeus Titan, i proceeded to kill the stalker. how did this happen? well, against a BS/WP scrapper, its quite easy.
easily hit the soft defense cap with parry so the DM/ could do anything. and his defense? how can he stack -acc on me when he cant even hit me. it was funny to say the least
