Through a variety of lucky salvage drops, I now have petrifying gaze kitted out with three accuracy/hold/recharge and one hold/recharge, giving me a total of 52.6% accuracy and 74.8% each hold and recharge -- meaning the hold time is just shy of twice the recharge time now. Oh, very nice. And fearsome stare has 4/6 Nightmare in it, which gives me +5% accuracy to everything.
One more level to fluffy. And I even have one of the Cloud Senses recipes (yay random drops), so I can find out then whether he takes those. -
Hand me my umbral power pool. It's the one that says Bad MFing Warshade.
Nicely done; I'd been thinking the Kheldians didn't look super fun to play, but you make it sound fun. The other Warshade guides I've seen have sort of been built around the assumption that you pick a specialty; I think your idea of changing specialties frequently is intriguing. Conventional wisdom is you won't be as good as a specialist, so a specialist will beat you, but I think CoH has dynamic enough battles during the course of a mission that flexibility may win. -
[Broadcast] Slamm3r: lft standing around until someone kills us, have slammer and slicer
[Broadcast] Bucksh0t: lol who rolls minions?
[Broadcast] Br4wler: Hey, I can steal purses all day, no one thinks it's worth farming me. How many times you been to the hospital so far TODAY, Mr. Lieutenant?
[Broadcast] Slamm3r: help heros attacking
[Broadcast] Bucksh0t: Yeah, that's real likely, I'm totally stepping into that mess.
[Broadcast] Slamm3r: this game sucks it's too hard
[Broadcast] Bucksh0t: Whatever, like I said, roll something good so you can fight back. Don't be such a whiner.
[Broadcast] Sl1cer: Hey, guys, if we're all into arcane and stuff, why are we all fighting with ordinary weapons?
[Broadcast] Slamm3r: WTF this lady won't give me her purse anyone help
[Broadcast] Bucksh0t: Oh, that was super cheap, I just got sniped by someone who was flying out of range. I couldn't even target her jumping from the top of a lamp post.
[Broadcast] Sl1cer: lol who's a whiner now?
[Broadcast] DaMMed.: I avenged you, Buck! Hid around the corner from the Slicer, jumped out, FIREBALL TO THE FACE! That's how you ssss1112211sss oh geeze -
I think I'll pretty much keep the build as last discussed for now, possibly moving a slot off one of the low-tier attacks for Hover because the 2-piece set bonus for freebird is actually sorta nice for me, I think. But basically I'm covered.
We'll see how it works out. Hoping to get in enough time this weekend to get Fluffy, which I imagine may substantially alter my play experience when soloing. -
I may just stick with it then. I do love caltrops, and the tohit buff from targeting drone is pretty noticeable also.
-
I have an energy/devices blaster. I've been having fun, but sometimes people tell me devices is suboptimal. Is there something else I should have taken instead that would have had way better synergy?

Quote:Even just a few friends is plenty. Right before the Real ID thing, I was hitting ICC25 and the like, just because I was friendly to hang out with.Fair enough. That's hilarious about <Undergeared>. And sure, you can get some great stuff on the AH in WOW. But much of the "best" stuff you can't. I *was* thinking about the random dungeon finder . . . but I overstated the case, that's only true for the so-called "casual player". Someone with access to a savvy and dedicated guild can accomplish a lot more.
I guess the thing is, though... There's a lot of high-end stuff that really does REQUIRE that you group. There's virtually nothing in CoH I can think of that you can't get, eventually, by soloing or shopping.
I also get the impression that CoH's baseline difficulty is intentionally fairly easy -- you can pretty much get any group together and do whatever you want, and it'll go fine. -
I dunno, a whole lot of people have said FS is the most unambigous "you must take this the moment it's available" power in the set, except maybe Fluffy.
I really like it, just because it pretty much locks down a mid-sized crowd completely for a while, and even after the completely-crippled phase is done, they seem to be under some residual fear or something. Net result is, I have plenty of time to get everything nicely debuffed before anyone's allowed to take actions. -
Really tough call. I think one of the issues is, "enjoyable" varies depending on my mood. Also on whether I want to group with people or solo.
-
I actually now have two semi-complete sets; I'm 4/6 Theft of Essence for Twilight's Grasp, and 4/6 Nightmare on Fearsome Stare. Which cost me, between the two of them, oh, probably nearly a million inf. And even though a couple of the ToE pieces are maybe level 20 or so, it's still pretty decent as bonuses go, and now, unless I decide to hop to a different set, I can upgrade that power pretty cheaply whenever I feel like it.

Quote:This is getting uncomfortably close to the "compare/contrast" rule, but I think it's a relevant point.As opposed to WOW, where you literally are unable to participate in some content if your gear score isn't high enough? I'm with Carnifax, I've never seen that happen in COX and can't imagine any scenario in the game that would actually *require* a full team of purpled-out heros.
And the fact is, this isn't the case. The only "literally can't" I can think of is that a very badly geared character can't use the random dungeon finder to get into a couple of specific instances. Apart from that, I've had characters that weren't qualified for some of the entry-level content get taken through ICC25 (third-from-hardest in the game at the time) by people who were well-geared and had a couple of openings in a 25-man team. There's also the guild <Undergeared> who have been clearing raids without any epic gear at all, and last I heard they were 6/12 ICC.
There's a huge difference between what pugs can do and what organized people who have chosen to cooperate on content can do. Furthermore, the content that's restricted like that, well... Yes, it's the gateway to more of that same content, but there frankly isn't that much content like that. There's bazillions of other things to do. Not everyone in WoW raids.
And finally, while I'm correcting things, I'd point out that some of the very best gear in WoW can be purchased. For oodles of money. Which a lot of people have a very hard time coming up with. There are similar complaints about the "broken" market, even. :P -

Yeah, I've been noticing that. Made some key progress -- I now have the level 30 damage IO memorized, and I've made decent money (well, by my standards) on it.
Been doing a bunch more crafting, filling in a couple of sets with mismatched stuff in the 20s and low 30s, because even mismatched and low level, it's giving me better bonuses than I would get from the level 30 common IOs. I also now have a couple of global buffs, like +5% accuracy to everything, which will eventually add up.
I think the big thing I was missing was that the prices fluctuate SO very quickly, so leaving a bid up at even a fairly "low" price overnight is often effective. -
Quote:Hmm. Sprint isn't insanely expensive or anything, but it's expensive enough that I'd rather not have to keep it up very often. I guess I don't actually have to, though, with the 120-second proc.Keep in mind that you can also slot the Celerity and Unbounded Leap IOs in Sprint. i have a couple flying alts who did that simply because they dropped and the Freebird IO didn't.
Quote:Honestly, none of my alts have ever slotted Hover for endurance reduction, just flight speed, set bonuses and procs.
Quote:As an aside, i really like slotting Dark Servant with a full set of Cloud Senses. It turns him into a debuffing monster with bonus proc damage, and gives some nice set bonuses. The recharge in the set is handy when using Fluffy as an alpha soaker. -
One of the things I've been liking about the CoH community is the combination of creativity and humor. I love reading bios; I almost never find one which is neither creative nor funny.
Anyway, a while back, a conversation I had led me to think about archetype ideas that we are unlikely to see, or possible new primary or secondary power sets.
This seems like fertile ground for people to post their crazy ideas.
New hero archetype: Magical Girl
Primary power sets to start with:
* Sparkly Art That We Don't Really Have Any Idea What It Is
* Ridiculous Mecha
* Flirting
* Threatening To Cry
* That Sword Is Bigger Than She Is
Secondary power sets would include:
* Transformations
* Fan Service
* Boyfriends
* Implausible Anatomy
* Author Self-Insert
... No? Perhaps it seems a little unlikely that this would ever get implemented? Aww. -
Quote:So far as I can tell, it got to a 5% miss chance a long time ago, and nothing I ever do can improve on that.And there is something you can do to lessen the odds of it missing. Slot for accuracy, and set bonuses that improve your accuracy.
Even with everything slotted, removing the 5% miss chance guarantee wouldn't mean that TG could never miss. It'd just mean that there'd have to be some kind of unusual defense in place for it to miss. Since a heal failing to go off can be a pretty serious problem for the team, I'd actually rather have it be pretty unusual. -
Could be.
I will poke around more, it might be possible to track it down and turn it into a bug report, whereupon it could perhaps get fixed. Maybe someday I'll have an idle weekend and I can work on it. -
Quote:Yes. But then, real markets have a lot of crazy incentives. Consider the parody ad "Diamonds: She'll Pretty Much Have To"So, yes, the game market does act a lot like real markets, but it has a lot of crazy incentives (getting crafting badges, for example) that completely skew the value of certain items.
The biggest difference is that, in real markets, the incentives to take advantage of inefficiencies are much, much, larger -- meaning that the available remaining inefficiency to exploit is usually much, much, smaller. -
Thanks, useful tips. I don't now remember why I put all those slots in Petrifying Gaze.
I'm also looking at another key question: Stealth IOs. These have some utility, and certainly, the stealth from Shadow Fall isn't quite as much as I'd like for soloing.
It appears that there's three; Celerity (running abilities), Unbounded Leap (jumping abilities), and Freebird (flying abilities). The obvious candidate would be Hover. So a couple-few questions...
1. It seems like I still want an endurance reduction in Hover, at which point I might as well do the one from Freebird... Would a third slot, to get the set bonus, be worth anything to me?
2. In what ways does the level of a stealth IO matter, if any? Does that affect when it is or isn't effective when exemplared down?
FWIW, just made 29, and got about 4.5M inf from a couple of good salvage drops. Currently thinking about starting to save up reward merits to try to get the freebird +stealth. -
So what server should I play on while Virtue is down? I'm pretty much a big fan of the RP community part of this game (I honestly don't comprehend why people would play these games without staying in character... I can't make sense of these games without the RP hook).

I've been using Crossover Games, which is closer to plain WINE. (The Cedega people are a fork who split off some time back, the Crossover people are much closer to a branch, and contribute a lot more code back to the WINE project, which is why I tend to prefer them.)
I agree that this might be it, but it's still totally mystifying to me, because I can't conceive of what WINE could be doing that would cause the chat window to retain focus like that. -
Okay, my other problem went away, this one stayed.
I play on a Mac, and I play on Linux. The Linux machine is faster and runs cooler, but it has a very odd user interface quirk, which is that the chat window is very reluctant to yield focus.
On both machines, if I hit enter and start typing, I am typing in the chat window on the selected channel.
When I hit enter again, the message is sent to the selected channel. If I'm on the Mac, focus is now back to the world -- hitting movement keys moves me. On my Linux machine, there's no cursor in the chat window, but the chat window still has focus; hitting wasd enters "wasd" as text in the chat entry box.
Hitting escape when the window is empty yields focus and I'm back to being able to move. Hitting escape once after something has been typed empties the window but keeps focus on it. Sending an empty message does not yield focus. On the Mac, of course, it does.
What mystifies me about this is that I asked about it on /hc, and someone said it was a Linux issue, but another of my friends plays on Linux and doesn't have this problem... -
Okay, here's what I ended up with.
http://planner.cohtitan.com/view/1820
Haven't put in any particular IOs, I don't know what's available well enough.
A few comments:
* Dropped Hasten in exchange for Recall Friend, just because, situational though it may be, it's sometimes super handy to have, and that veteran reward teleporter is a LONG way out.
* Shuffled things around, and in particular, moved Fly quite a bit later. In practice, I don't have to do much travelling when exemplared, and I do have Ninja Run if I need it.
* Dark Embrace is fully slotted just because it's a defense set that I'm likely to have always-on once I have it.
* I am totally open to the notion that Petrifying Gaze doesn't really need all those slots, or something.
The goal of this build, basically, is that if someone at any level needs "help with a mission", I can probably help with that mission, through some combination of heals (more relevant at lower levels) debuffing enemies, helping allies, etcetera. Assault, Tactics, and Recall Friend are more there for other people than for me, although Tactics will also affect my slotting at higher levels probably.
Current plan is that since there are likely to be free respecs "sometime soon", I'm just gonna sit on this until that happens. -
I haven't yet tried with plain WINE, but there was a new update to Crossover Games today, and the problem went away. I still have the chat window focus problem. (Weirder still, I know two other Linux users, and only one of them has it...)
EDIT: ... and it came back. And went away. It seems to be less frequent, but I still have the slideshow problem "sometimes". -
Yes, it is.
Quote:It has NO basis in reality and this includes the broken market.
This is a market in which real people are exchanging things that have some kind of value to them. It is, by definition, a real market, governed by the same fundamental principles that govern any market in which humans are exchanging things which have value to them and which cost them some form of time, effort, or other resource to acquire.
There's a reason that tests involving manufactured games with arbitrary rules (e.g., prisoner's dilemma, etc.) consistently predict the results of similar trials with things like purchases of houses, decisions about whether or not to commit crimes (or to inform on people who did), and so on: Because humans use the same rules to evaluate them.
