  1. Okay, worth knowing.

BTW, I don't know of anything saying that ownership of characters would transfer to the people running the MMO, and I suspect they'd run into a horrible nest of legal trouble if they actually tried to assert any such thing. That is, in general, simply not how copyright works. You can claim an implicit license up to a point, but it's surprisingly hard to transfer copyright no matter what anyone says.

In any event, since I've created the same character in another MMO and CoH, they can go sue each other. :P

    So LOLbat

I sort of enjoyed the Mercedes Lackey one, although it had some typos and suchlike, but couldn't finish it because we couldn't duo the AV at the end.
  3. A friend of mine, who has written books, was thinking about playing a character from one of those books in CoH.

The ToS appear to prohibit the use of characters-which-are-owned. Does that apply even if you're the owner, or have the owner's written permission?
  4. Huh, I thought to try dragging to the arrows, but it didn't seem to work. I'll try sides of the screen.
  5. I finally used up enough slots with characters I actually like to get some extra slots.

So... I now have a slot on another page. Is there any way for me to reorder characters between that page and the first page?
  6. * Add a small recovery component (wouldn't need to be big AT ALL to be valuable)
    * Possibly turn it into a floatie, like FFG.

The issue right now is just that it's rarely even practical to get much use out of it, and the use it provides is pretty limited; most groups run out of blue a lot more than green. Still fits the traps theme pretty decently, but makes the power a little less likely to get dismissed out of hand.
  7. I am unable to comprehend any build which puts Upgrade Robot off, at all, ever. Why would you wait until 47 to get your robots properly in shape?

FWIW, I'm doing bots/traps, and loving it. I have Aid Other, rather than Repair, although I might later get Repair too. JUST got my assault bot, haven't started running with it yet.
  8. One question I've had:

They've said a few times that the alignment merits are a bonus for staying-true.

Does that mean that only heroes or villains who have never changed alignment can get them, or just that only heroes and villains who are currently staying heroic or villainous can get them? In other words, if one of my villains goes rogue and then hero, can that hero then stay heroic and get hero-alignment-stuff?
  9. What does the "+" at the beginning of the bind do? (The one before $$ teamselect)

Don't remember the exact details, but they're 2009ish. Quite simply, there are no new drivers that work on this laptop; ASUS hasn't released updates, and the unmodified "generic" ATI drivers fail badly on this hardware. So not much I can do about that.

Nightphall: Try turning off Hero stats and then restart the game, see if you still get the low frame rate. I did, which surprised me a little.

    Addon software?

Tragically, I lose -- HeroStats can only display stuff in-game in Windowed mode under Windows 7, and the crappy un-updated video drivers on my laptop are such that that knocks about 70% off my frame rate. (And I can't use the card vendor's drivers, they crash badly on this hardware.)
  12. Someone recommended a program called HeroStats. I have obtained it and tried running it. This program attempts to (or can, anyway) display some data over the game window. That works only in Windowed mode under Windows 7. Unfortunately, if I enter Windowed mode, whether or not I am running HeroStats, my frame rate drops from around 40fps to around 12fps.

Machine is an ASUS G73-something laptop, ATI 5870 video card. Drivers are NOT updated because every source I can find says that the ATI generic drivers cause lockups on this machine, and ASUS has not yet released an update that works well on this hardware.

Hee! Nice background. My /traps MM is a robot. I'm not sure about character concept for a traps defender yet; I have a ton of ideas and none of them have really CLICKED for me. I'll keep messing with it.
  14. They occasionally teleport to me even if I'm not stopping; if I just run long enough, every so often a bot drops out of the sky near me.

But okay, I'm mostly convinced. I still think it'd be SUPER AWESOME to be able to fly around with my bots in formation, so I'll probably take the power anyway. Sometimes, RP > efficiency.

Thanks, I feel safer now. I've been using vmaps for ages, but I only heard about herostats today, and my first response was "OMG WANT" followed immediately by "wait, is that even ALLOWED?"

    MM farmer

I haven't levelled it so far yet, but I am LOVING bots/traps. A bit weak on heals, but I just added Aid Other, and that seems to be doing a fair bit of good. Still have to be careful with alphas, but this will get a ton better when I have an assault bot...

    Addon software?

My expectation would be that the only way I'd see a staff response to this would be if it were definitely not allowed. I just wanted to get some feedback on this before I went downloading stuff that I don't trust. (I do like that the stat-monitor thing looks to be open source. Yes, I can actually read source in a few languages, and I think I will before I run anything. I'd rebuild it myself, but I don't have a compiler on the games machine.)

    Addon software?

Ah-hah! I'd been wondering how the stats-gathering could possibly be legit enough to have a public page where they post it complete with source code. Monitoring chat logs makes sense. I may grab that, then, since it sounds legit. (And hey, sure the van's a bit rusty, but FREE CANDY. No one mean would give out free candy, amirite?)
  19. I have had quirky behavior similar to this, at the very least. It happened to me once recently, and I couldn't get out of the game, either, because I couldn't click on the quit button... and finally I figured out what had happened. I think.

ACTUAL PROBLEM: Somehow, Windows has decided to give focus to a program which is not CoH, but which is also not visible behind CoH's full screen display.

HOW IT WORKS: As long as you're not focused-to-chat, CoH is grabbing raw keyboard input data and turning it into things like "pop up this menu" or whatever. As soon as you enter the text window, though, somehow the question of what happens when you type turns into a question for the Windows text entry stuff, which thinks you are typing in the other window.

HOW I FOUND IT: I noticed that I couldn't click on the "quit" buttons, and that when the mouse cursor was over them, it turned into a standard Windows mouse cursor. After some experimenting, I established that a large hunk of the screen, including the middle, was showing cursors for another window which was invisible but presumably "in front of" the CoH window. Once I figured that out, I used cursor shape changes to find the upper-right corner of the window, moved a few pixels down and left, and clicked -- causing that window to become closed, and suddenly CoH worked again.

This has happened to me a couple-few times, only when playing on actual Windows -- I don't see it on Linux or Mac. I have no clue what's going on or how to fix it. I assume that setting the game to "Windowed" and then maximizing it would help.

(Question: On Mac, I can do command-enter to toggle Windowed/Full Screen. On Windows, I can't, obviously, because there's no Command key; is there a toggle to Windowed mode, though, that I've just missed?)

    Addon software?

Hi! I'm afraid this question may get me in trouble, but I think it's legit.

I have seen people refer to various hackery which modifies CoH. The ones I've seen include:

    * A program which runs alongside CoH and records statistics about your gameplay.
    * Some data file upgrades which add additional information to the minimap displays for the city.
    * Texture/model mods, such as an "all-nude" model mod.

My basic question: Are ANY of these legit, or permitted by ToS? I'm coming from a background in a game where all three of these would be not only bannable offenses, but bannable defenses that the game software would actively seek out and detect. On the other hand, in that game, there was an actively-maintained API for user-created user interface modifications in game.

From what I've seen of CoH, my guess would be that all of these are allowed, but not necessarily supported or encouraged. I say this because I don't see anyone complaining about references to them, and I see a lot of people recommending them without much hassle. But I'm not sure.

And honestly, I can live without the all-nude mod, because given peoples' taste in costumes, I can't see that ending well.

But the stat-tracking thing sounds really fun to me (I might be a TINY bit obsessive about data collection), and the map addon similarly sounds fun.

I've avoided referring to these by name because it may be that they're considered exploits or hacks; if they're not, I'd be happy to provide actual names that people could look up. And similarly, if stuff like this is allowed, I'd love to know what else is out there.

    No traps guides?

I'd reroll my archery/devices blaster as traps/archery, except I really want cloaking device for RP reasons. I'd been thinking energy could knock things either into or out of traps -- one of these is sorta cool. The other, maybe not so much.

Apropos of nothing, I just thought of a horrible idea for an archery toon. She wears a <Family> suit, and goes around killing people. Her name? "Made Marian". Ah, nevermind.

I'll think about this more, maybe roll something up. FFG's far enough in to make the early levels a little frustrating, but I'll think of something.

    No traps guides?

I guess I tend to view any model where I'm likely to take an action other than "attack" as my first part of dealing with a mob as "conservative".

I'll look over the secondaries. I like AR and Archery, but I think I'll go for something without redraws, and anyway, I have an archery/devices blaster already.

    No traps guides?

When I was originally doing it, I couldn't get my head around the non-healing set. Using it on the MM has gotten me more appreciative of it, although there's some obvious differences; triage beacon is a much better power for a mastermind, because the extra regen is affecting you and several friends even when soloing. I'm not sure what secondary I'd use, but I think I could easily enjoy it; I really enjoy the conservative and planning play style, to be sure.

Okay, I hereby declare this the "thread for helping seebs decide how to do a traps defender, so I can try to turn the experience into a useful guide."

I've already got a /dark defender, I think I'm looking to play something else. I know basically nothing about the defender secondaries.
  24. As I recall, TT does some kind of melee damage type, at least in part, while Night Fall is negative energy. For a /dark defender, TT is generally better because it fills a hole, and because immobilizing is so very awesome.

The obvious answer, though, is: Get both. TT to immobilize, then nightfall to damage everything in the cone. They really do pair up together extremely well.

    No traps guides?

The guides list doesn't have a Traps guide; does that mean there isn't one? I sucked at my attempted Traps defender (although it was horrible clipping issues with his costume that pushed me over the line to deleting), but... Having gotten a /traps MM up into the 20s, I'm really starting to love the set, and I'm wondering whether there's a good guide for it. If not, I think maybe I am volunteering to try to write one. Although, obviously, there would have to be some levelling involved.
