I was hailed once. It was golf ball sized hail. And I forgot my clubs. Which is just as well since I can't golf. Not without a shotgun.

Why, Namsetats of course.

What would you do with a klondike bar?
Well, I know what you SHOULDN'T do. Confuse it with a klondike bear. They don't like to be licked. -
Well Craban, that's what you get for marrying older women.
I knew a great pianist;
his organ was huge.
He'd play all day
and the women swooned.
He'd stroke his keys
with prenuptial bliss.
Until one day the lid came down,
slammed by a spurned lass.
And now he's a great pianist no more;
he sits depressed playing only a minor chord. -

Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out!
Here comes the Spiderman. "

They are coming.
I hear their claws upon the floor
sharp tipped, gouging into the stone.
They are coming.
Red eyes glimmering from shadows dark
lusting hungrily for fresh flesh.
They are coming.
squeals of anticipation
amidst murmurs of horror.
They are here.
And now
I
FEAST. -
Aye, he has much 'espleening' to do for sure! But I've always said, "'liver' alone if she's good to ya". Whoever she may be...I 'colon' find a good woman who was 'intestine' enough to keep my attention long, not that I 'mind'. Bah women! Who 'knees' them anyways! 'Toe' much of a good thing is 'toe' much anyways. I always get the gals who dress in 'pinkie' neways. But that's enough for now, so 'lung' everyone!

I ate a hurricain for breakfast,
it turned out to be quite the repast;
but ere much time did pass,
I found out the wind did give me gas. -
It crept inside
your skin last night
and burrowed deep
beneath you psyche;
but now you scream
in fear and glee
and didn't even realise
you're sleeping in pee. -
Well, on the plus side when CoV goes live and the villains level up Warburg will make more roleplay sence. But until then....I agree.
I was in there yesterday (Thursday) and there was a large free for all/team fight going on at the waterside. They seemed to be enjoying themselves and stuck to that area. People standing on the outskirts (me included) weren't even attacked (good thing to cuz I'd've wiped the floor with them!<LOL>. Now, I can understand heroes fighting like that. Sort of like a 'Danger Room' training session. That makes sence, and even the good natured ribbing that was going on.
So, I decide to explore a bit and I find a lone blaster with a scientist trailing him; I ask him if he needs help getting the scientist to safety (I am, after all, a hero and I know there are probably unscrupelous folks about). He invites me in the team (there was a 2nd blaster) and was VERY happy to have a scrapper along. Well, we finish the mission with no problems. I'm happy that so far I've seen no punkish/leachish PvP behavior yet. We go to get another scientist and the guy says, "HEY! There's a scrapper leading a scientist! Let's get him! Get in position, don't let him know we're coming!" Ok, so much for non-punkish behavior. I left the team and seriously thought about helping the scrapper out, except I was now in a moral quandary; attack former teammates to help out a stranger or do nothing? Since I didn't mark their position before leaving, nothing won out. But still, that kind of behavior tees me off. Sure, it's a FFA zone, but why interfere with some loner who's trying to finish his mission? Especialy when some OTHER loner went out of the way to help YOU out? Heck, that coulda been me leading the scientist to safety after all. Ah well.
Important things to know about PvP...unless you're VERY strong or accomplished, don't go alone. Expect to be 'ganked' by multiple foes. Expect leaches to attack you while you're fighting. But ALSO expect there to be nice, decent folks out there willing to lend you a hand. There ARE honorable people around, even in PvP. -
<Kamui flicks off the radio> Sheesh, and I WORK with these people? Some of them are wierder then the villains......
-
Kblaze said, "Kamui, you're comparing apples to oranges here, but even so, in real life the companies I have worked for will gladly pay the 18-year-old high school graduate more money if he has more skills. The fact that Larry has been around longer doesn't entitle him to anything more - he got what he was due for all those years, or should have (a steady paycheck)."
Of course I'm comparing apples and oranges; I said it was an allegory<G>. However, the point I was making was George has more skills then the 18 yr older fresh out of Highschool. That was stated in the arguement. Now, the company YOU work for might pay that 18 yr older more money....I just hope he's not applying for a Surgeon's position.
"This sense of entitlement that people have has got to go. You work hard, play well and whatever rewards you have coming to you for that shouldn't have to wait for PvP; you should already have received them, so the game doesn't owe you any more distinction."
It's not a sence of entitlement. You can play the game for 15 years, if you roll an alt then it won't have anything more then any other lvl 1 character would have. No one is saying that time spent in a game should garner the player extra (or at least I'm not saying it) goodies. What I AM saying is level is an expression of skill in these types of games. A level 50 character has 'learned' more then a lvl 1 character on his first mission. Note I am speaking about the CHARACTER, not the person playing them. Remember that we are NOT playing ourselves, but instead are playing characters. So then, why in a fight would the lower level person have the same chance to hit as the higher level person? He hasn't 'learned' as much about fighting.
Kasterisk said, "From what I've read, the division in Points of View seems to fall between people who see this as a ROLE-PLAYING Game versus those who see it as a Role-Playing GAME."
Curses upon you! I was gonna say something along that line...<G>. To address your point though about high level 'noobs' I shall delve into an example. In 'Dark Age of Camelot' we have had an influx of 'Adena inc.'. Those who played 'Linneage 2' are familiar with them. Essentialy, they are a conglomerate of oriental players who are payed to 'farm' items and cash for sale in real-world money. Now, these people are all 50th lvl. That's the highest you can get in DAoC. And they suck at it. They consistently lose duels which they shouldn't (A heavy tank v. a Ranger(archer) and the ranger wins...in melee!). When they venture into RvR PvP they lose. They even lose often when fighting mobs becuase they realy don't know how to play their characters. It DOES take some skill to play even these games. So, some dweeb buys him a lvl50 scrapper, or gets PL'd. He then goes up against say, a lvl 45 whatever who knows his/her character backwards and forward. I'm putting my money on the lvl 45. -
"Yeah... cause we all now that it wasn't the players fault that the lawsuit from Marvel was filed."
Heh, I said FELLOW MAN, not Lawyers. Lawyers aren't people afterall but instead a lower lifeform....<LOL>. Personaly, I'd love a system that was purely skill (twitch) based. Problem is, how would you institute a skill based system in CoH? I don't think it's possible without completely recreating the game, in which case it is no longer CoH. Now, take Vendetta-Online, they use a purely skill (twitch) based system where a complete noob could beat an ace if he has the inherrent skill...but that is a space combat game, not a superhero game.
I dunno, personaly I think people are knee-jerking like 1920's flappers doing the Charleston. When CoV comes live, you won't have to worry about some lvl 50 bully marching through the streets of Atlas or Kings Row laying down havoc. It's already been stated there will be zones for PvP after all. If you don't want to PvP, then you don't. Like in Dark Age of Camelot, don't want to PvP, then you never go into the frontier. But there is something to be said for matching your skills against another person. -
People keep talking about why a high level person should have advantages a low level person doesn't have just becuase they've played longer. Well, I'm gonna play analogy boy again; let's take a look at the workplace. You have George. He's been an employee for 17 years. He's kept up to date with changes in the industry, he's always on time, works late, is an all around good employee. He has put in his time. The company hires Larry, an 18 yr old highschool graduate. Should Larry make the same money as George? Why not? Why should GEORGE make so much more money then Larry? Just becuase he's been around longer? Well, YES. He's put his time in. He has learned his field. He has paid his dues to the company. Now, how does this translate to the game? First off, remember that we play CHARACTERS. This isn't like say, Tribes2 or Castle Wolfenstien where you log on, grab a weapon, and go forth to frag. This is a ROLE PLAY game. Whether or not people decide not to roleplay is inconsiquential. So you have a high level hero, he has been around for a long time, has learned the ropes so to speak. He has learned combat tricks and had his lumps force fed to him. Why should some kid who hasn't even read the instruction manuel on the power-suit he found in the alley be able to hold his own against this hero? Remember that levels denote KNOWLEDGE, not time spent playing.
Now, one of the major complaints about RvR is the fear of high level players ganking low level players. Yes, that will happen. But it's a self-policing situation, becuase there are other high level players who will go out of their way to protect lower level players from these 'villains'. Frankly, the low opinion some of you have for your fellow gamers is appalling. I mean, heck! Seems like some of ya'll beleive every single one of your fellow gameplayers is some mysogynistic cowardly psuedo-murderer just waiting to beat you up while cackling insanely. Have some faith in your fellow man, ok? -
"...You have to AGREE to enter combat with this other person."
So, in otherwords a /duel PvP concept where we are NOT playing a Heroes/Villains Roleplay game, but instead playing an arena game? I find the concept of that type of game to be depressing. I much prefer the idea of whole, large zones where people can actualy roleplay heroes and villains and go at it. If some lvl 40 dweeb wants to be a jerk and 'grief' low level people, then the rest of the NON dweebs band together and beat him till he stops. There will always be complete morons in any gaming community; you can't avoid that. But from what I've seen of the CoH community (at least on Virtue anyways) we have a mature player base. Now, I have no problem with there being penalties for a high level person taking down low level people, but a system where before every fight you have to click "accept" "deny"? <shudder> -
"In PvP situations I've been in before, the higher level PvPer (generally) enjoyed ganking the lower levels as much as they could."
You know the good thing about being in a social game? You don't play alone. Let's say there is a lvl 40 picking on lvl 10s. What can the 10s do? Well, they can get a vast horde of low leveled people together to do battle against this super powerful supervillain; you see that in comic books often. Or...they can call for more powerful heroes to come. When I played Shadowbane I was one of the people who hunted PKers. Someone picked on lower leveled people and I'd be off on his trail. I wasn't the only one either, there were a number of 'Protectors' out there; even a guild. It's a funny thing, but Griefer PKers don't realy like being PKed. They prefer the easy kill so they can boast about it. Actualy, I see unrestrained and unmodified-level PvP in CoH as being a good thing; it'd give the game more of a comic book feel. I mean, c'mon folks! We're playing heroes, right? What's more heroic then helping out 'the little man' in his time of need? And for that matter, whats more villainous then beating up on a weaker hero? Villains being evil and all. Of course, the innitial 'smackdown' might not be fun for the lower leveled hero, but just think of it in a Roleplay state of mind...the fresh faced youngster watching his 'hero' battle the nasty supervillain who has terrorised the streets for to long, and even getting his own small blows in on occasion, helping to vanquish the threat.
Something else to think about, levels aren't a sign of how long you've played, but instead of the skill and abilities your character has learned. For instance, let's take 2 people and toss them in a boxing ring. One is a begining karate student. The other is Chuck Norris. Now, can that beginner beat Norris? Well, sure. If he gets very VERY lucky. But he'd have a better chance of hitting the Lotto a hundred times in a row. Fact is, he probably won't lay a finger on Norris. In this example, Norris is the lvl 40 and the student is the lvl 10. Norris has learned, over the years, how to read his opponents body language, how to mask his own body language, how to move, feint, the best spots to hit to cuase a variety of effects, etc. The whitebelt has learned how to fall properly. Maybe. Now, if we use the scaling lvl model many people are promoting then a lifetime of training is negated instantly. Sure, Norris would know more moves, but that whitebelt can still hit him. That makes no sence. Even less sence then using a real life example for a game <G>. I know some people are worried about 'fairness'. Personaly, I don't see where fairness comes into a game. Conflict is what makes a game fun; conflict with the NPCs, and soon conflict with other people.
