Quote:What? Skipping the Voltaic? Why so? Couldn't that be my personal defense right there? And it can be destroyed right? Or is this for the sake of saving a power for the dark mastery pool?Having Played Electric quite alot and even a Dark/Electric up to level 28 (long time ago),
I can tell you that Electric is a set that you can play at range if you like, but its real strength is in Melee Range. My Emp/Electric would kill for a Tar Patch power.
Sapping on a Dark/Elec is going to be alot like sapping on an Emp/Elec, only 10 times safer.
You will want to slot Short Circuit to recharge as fast as possible. It also needs ACC and End Mod. I personally prefer some damage in it as well. Unlike my defender, you can stack Pet.Gaze/Fluffy and Tesla, so you are less pressured to take Electric Mastery or Psychic for a second Hold.
My choice would be Dark Mastery as well. The idea of running DN, OG, Tar Patch, Dark Servant, then hitting Soul Drain SC,BL,SC,BL just sounds like so much nastiness.
Personally I would skip Voltaic and just run with Fluffy. You will find Dark and Electric will be greedy on slotting, or at least alot of powers worthy of slotting, and having a second slot-greedy pet will add up. Make Dark Servant the best he can be and you will be able to spend more of your own time dishing out the damage. -
i think what I come to realize is that most of the people out there are playing basically what they assume most people want or maybe more showy or CoH Cliche builds. Because when i tell you guys that Dark Miasma is underrated or something to that degree then you say "Huh? What are you talking about?" LOL! Before i tried Dark Miasma myself I was just telling a team that it was underrated, thus I had to roll one myself. And so far, I'm liking it.

Quote:Naw, they went on to say they loved the pretty purple rocks the earth troller was using. LOL!Dark Defenders have a lot of control powers. Notice the quote is "Nice controlling," not "Good job Controllers." Maybe he or she was including your body of work in that compliment.
And maybe I did come across an odd PuG. Since the last double exp weekend I have been on teams full of trollers and defenders. Though we dont wipe, it's a slow time. Mid 20s with that kind of team is a bit of a drag lol. -
I see. I used electric, so I didn't know it would take that long to sap the end out of the baddies. Especially since Dark Miasma makes it a quicker time killing mobs.
-
I was thinking about going the sapper direction being that my secondary wouldn't be that noticeable to begin with. I think sapping goes unnoticed as well, but when an enemy can't attack, how can you not notice that.
So with a lvl 50 Dark/elec/dark I can have good -res, good -tohit, good -spd, a few holds via pet gaze, fearsome stare, Tesla cage, tentacles, decent sapping power when slotted right, and one self centered heal. I also get two pets.
When I look at the whole picture this seems like a beast of a defender even though it's more controller-ish. I should go the sapping direction so I can get some more endurance. Running two pets, darkest night, and all the other power can run me end low.
What do you think? -
Heya guys. I am just now getting deep into playing a defender. I am usually tanking or scrapping. I built a Dark/Elec defender up to 28 so far and it's been nice. These days I find myself on a team full of defenders and controller so no one really stands out. Last night I finally found myself being the only defender along side 1 troller, a few blasters, scrappers, and a tank. We did really good. I was a bit bothered when I found the Tank saying "Good job blasters." Also, "nice controlling" I was like....WT F I did some work in there too. So with evil intent, the next mish i sat back a while and didn't do much of anything. Next thing you know it was "Where's the tar patch?" and "Man that was close we almost wiped" Then when I got back on my job we were solid again. No good jobs there.
I know Dark Miasma isn't the most showy up in your face noticeable defender primary out there, but c'mon. Now, I know I CHOSE to be the ugly duckling for the defender set, but sometimes it's just messed up that the Dark Miasma set isn't as appreciated. Probably my last defender I roll. probably. I have one other defender, but i almost get tired of people depending soley on my emp to carry the team. I find my self being next to the tank as far as survivability when i use other sets so I don't expect a defender to babysit me. My GF has a fire/kin and people are always begging for the SB. She gets annoyed because she has alot going on and people are always bugging about it when she tries to divvy it out as much as possible.
Anyways, I love Dark Miasma. I I guess I like being different. -
Hello Defender class of 2009. I am not new to CoH, but I am a bit new to the defender class. I have one other defender which is and Emp/Rad. I forgot about her and didn't really want to touch a defender AT again. I am generally a Tank and a scrapper type. I have a few 50s under my belt with the Tanks and scraps.
Something about Dark Miasma/Electric intrigued me. So I have one now up to lvl 26. He's been fun to play...I think. I always manage to get on a team with tons of trollers and defenders. I went in knowing that a Dark/ defender would be a thankless toon. You know, all the healers, FF, and sonics get the praises while Dark is the black sheep of the gang.
I know what Dark/ is good at, but I wanted to get a little more advice from the defender veterans on what I might want to consider when building my toon. Here is what I do know about rolling a Dark/Elec
- I get two pets. Fluffy and the voltaic sentinel
- Dark Miasma is a debuff/slow defender. Darkest night gets less and less use the higher I
get because the others can kill quicker as well. But Darkest night still helps alot. On AV
fighting this is a heaven sent and a must (In my opinion)
- I may skip petrifying gaze OR I can stack that with e tesla cage for bosses and such.
- Fearsome stare may need 2 acc enhances to get the minions and Lts.
- tar patch doesn't affect everyone. Know my enemies.
- Defender attacks weren't really meant to be killers but rather a support to the support
(support being me, a defender) I chose elec because I can stun foes and give me and
team time to get in another attack.
- I chose the fly pool so I can be above the fight and also give out heals better without
totally putting myself right in harms way.
So what things would you suggest? slotting? Powers? Play style? Let me know. I am kind of new to defenders remember. And please do correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!! -
maybe it's because I am ugly (LOL)....I just don't find teams like I used to. And when I form up a team people aren't really into traveling from city to city for arcs ya know. So I have a few that drop. BUT, if anything I think the task force rate is up. I've been into quite a few of those.

Quote:Wow my experiences are totally different. I struggle trying to get on a team most nights. If I do get on a team I usually end of with some familiar faces which is good, but alot of time I'm soloing because i can't find a team when i throw out the LFT.Can't say I've noticed any real difficulty finding teams at any time I've logged on lately. Mornings, late night, middle of the afternoon durning a sick day...the only thing I haven't seen are the spamming requests from the AE for boss farms.
For a recent example I'll just take this past wednsday, I logged in around 10am eastern with the intent of checking a couple auctions, so no LFT flag, not sending any global messages to friends, and no attempts to contact anyone...less thatn 5 minutes from logging on I recieve an invitation to a team. Since I had a few hours befpre work i decided to join up for a bit, we had a 7-8 person team running for 2-3 hours, and a good time was had by all. This is obviously just anectdotal data, but it's fairly typical for any time I log on to virtue...no real trouble finding teams and no lack of people to play with. -
Hello all. What is the current state of CoX as you see it now and do you think double XP weekend will make it better for weeks or months to come? it seems like there is a steep decline of participation these days as far as teams go. The streets of paragon seem alot emptier. Some love the game even more now and some have moved onto different MMO-RPGs.
- Aion and Champions may have thinned our numbers
- difficulty sliders may have contributed to the damage types not teaming as much any more.
They can just terrorize the mobs themselves...push themselves to the limit.
- Super SK has made finding teams in your levels zones more difficult as well dont you think?
- People arent using AE for what it was truly meant for. I think that if it was set up the way
it is now at the beginning of AE then it would have been ok, but people got spoiled with the
farming and now they assume it sucks when it doesn't
Any more contributing factors to the current state of CoX? I've been on and off of CoX like 4 times in the passed few years. Something about this game keeps me coming back, but at the same time stale. I think I'm kinda partial to CoX thus the reason why I haven't event tried CO or Aion. LOL! -
Question, what exactly is the sign up for? Just any old mishes? Just a certain crew to run alot of mishes with during that time slot?
-
hehe, hard crowd man. There are plenty of good arcs out there, but you have to sift through them. The best xp comes from the already made faction mishes..so I've heard. You just have to search man. But after you get contacts from completing the bank mishes there are some decent arcs, but you might have ran them before. I'm having fun and getting pissed at the same time running arcs in Cimeroa. Those guys gang up on my Kat/WP. It's challenging. I had to turn down the mob density. I was running 2+/4 heroes. I had to turn it down to 3 heroes and even still when enough of them get around your it gets hairy
-
I don't know about you guys, but it seems these days Doctored Wounds sets fits my budget more than the numina's sets. Man, it's hard and expensive these days to complete a set of numina's unless you constantly task force. I've been trying. LOL!
But I like speeding up my attack chain too because at the moment the smite>siphon>smite>MG isn't working because of recharge times. but I still tear up baddies. -
Good point on the true grit. Looks like I have some reslotting to do. i could use the recharge for powers like shield charge, soul drain, etc. And I could also use the extra hit points. Thanks!
-
I also have a DM/SD. I have some questions though.
Any particular reason why you guys chose to go with Against all Odds so late? I think I got it as soon as it was available or something. And I took the fighting pool early on as well.
Also, why all the doctored wounds in true grit? Is there a particular reason you didnt slot the three resistance slots there? or did you make up for it elsewhere? Or was it that you sacrificed resistance for something else?
I'm just trying to get a different perspective on how I might build my DM/SD. he's only 36 now.
Oh also, i went with the flight pool rather than super jump because I can get air superiority and then flight. I have another attack and then the travel power. This attack replaces the shadow punch I might've taken for the attack chain. I four slotted it with Kinetic combat. The target I attack can barely stay on their feet if they aren't too high lvled and a boss or something. I can even knock bosses down though. -
Wait, Oct 5th is a monday. Is it the 2nd? or is it really monday the 5th?
-
That's what I was thinking. I was thinking about this. I know there were some uber min/max-ers out there and folks who have their own takes on the different combos. Some people take joy in doing things like this, but then again it's subjective.

Hello, I have been trying to find a guide that would kinda tell the story of the primary and secondary powerset synergies. Ya know, like in what way do each of these complement each other and what holes are in each set and how might one even fill these holes if possible. I would do this myself, but I am no true knowledge base on this. Any help? Quick tips?
-
You know, I've been playing CoH on and off for 3 years. It's only this year that I became a bit more serious about this game as me and my GF are into this heavily together. There are a lot of guides out there that have helped me on this forum. One thing that I haven't had decent information on is secondaries scrapper powersets. It seems like you guys and gals in this particular thread have this down to a science. The debates are good. I've learned a lot on how I should be building my toons according some of the good info in this thread. The guides out there don't focus enough on secondary sets which is more important than your primaries in my opinion. Sadly enough this thread alone will make me give my toons a second look and maybe a respec. My toons aren't bad and my toons have decent survivability below lvl 40. alot better than peer lvls. But they could be better with a second look.
I have a lvl 38 Kat/WP toon that I am surprisingly have fun with. I have a DM/Shield toon at the same lvl. I liked the DM/shield guy first, but now I find myself loving the kat/WP better now. Better AoE's too. I still find myself having to pop greens though. I need to fill some holes. I think I need to slot more for regen and maybe more positional defense at this time. I don't have the numbers, but I think they were ok. But my typed defense is what I might be lacking.
For us ppl who aren't deep into the slotting of set bonuses, I think some of the guides would be better if they told us what they were building off of the sets for in particular. -
Quote:Yeah, I've never even thought about the volume man. For a good analogy it's like the drug dealer selling alot for a little. The way I have been doing (selling a little for alot) gets me a lot of inf in spurts. You way could possibly have a constant flow coming in. And it could possibly help the buying market by selling these things for low prices constantlyThen the price you're setting is too high. There's just a handful of recipes / IOs where you can set the price at the going rate (or higher) and expect it to sell quickly. The rest of them can sit a long time if you set the price at the last five sold. A Numina Heal/End isn't one of the recipes that can guarantee to sell quickly.
I prefer to realize profit by setting modest prices and making it up by volume. Occasionally (actually, frequently) I get the prevailing market price or higher. Sometimes, the IO gets sold at a discount, but still at a profit. I started a new alt recently (currently level 33) and she's sitting on about 212M influence. There's plenty of players who have considerably more at the same level, but it's enough for me to outfit her out decently. Probably, when she's level 50, I'll have in the neighborhood of 600-700M, and that should be enough to get her everything short of purple recipes. -
I do the whole crafting and selling bit. The things are not selling of course like they used to though. I've had the same number of rares and common sitting in the WW for like a couple weeks and no one buys them. I was almost tempted to snatch them back from the market and lower the price, but I'd be out like a couple hundred thousand inf. I actually have a numina heal/end up there. Surprised that didnt get snatched up. But yeah, playing the market these days seems like a more meticulous endeavor. Me and my GF will spend an hour crafting, selling, buy, recycle. But yeah like you said, the impatient get penalized.

Note: THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT THREAD.
So, alright, with with the death of AE farming I have noticed a sharp decrease of crafted IOs sales online. I've been trying to buy some of the set pieces and can't seem to get em. I'm not even talkin about purples either. While the IO sets are in shortage, the prices of salvage and the recipes seem a bit high at the moment.
My question is with all these being said, how are some of you successfully building a set bonus stacked character? The drops just dont seem to be coming. I've been doing AE mishes solo and teamed up trying to gather tickets and enjoy the content at the same time. I've been in the Rikti war zone tearing it up with Onyx Slash and Wrapem. I've been on a few task forces since the opening of I16. Been racking up merits. AE tickets don't get me decent reward roll prizes and neither are the normal merits reward rolls. And when i do get some rares back I try to sell them and of course very little success has been had there.
So is anyone being any bit successful? I know you may not want the general public to know so if you are that secretive feel free to send me a PM. HAHA! Please!!!! I'm trying to get my Katana/WP scrapper a lil beefed. -
/e Clapping hands together daintily saying "cakes and pies oohhhh cakes and pies!"

The crazy thing is, with this new I16 crazy colorization of powers thing, I don't see how the color of your fonts are a big deal ya know. I never really did understand why people hated multi-colored fonts. To me it is a peek into your true personality. Colorful, creative, maybe meticulous, but nothing bad. It's self expression.
The internet can be cruel on self expression, because when you aren't face to face with a person then you have to be what the majority wants you to be or else prepared to get flamed! I've been kicked out of two forums over the passed year for being myself. I AM NOT GETTING BANNED FROM COH. LOL! I was on a sports car forum...banned. Just because I had a funny opinion about certain sized people riding in certain sized cars. No lie.
Yeah, over the past 2 years I have seen the ugly face of forums. Sometime you just have to go with the flow or have leather skin for this.
