  1. My Shade is by far my favorite to play but I am still fairly new to the circuit so anyone is free to step in and correct me if I'm wrong. I think everyone here can agree that step one is to read Dechs Kaison's spectacular guide:

    http://dechskaison.blogspot.com/2011...-warshade.html

As far as Incarnates go, here's what I personally have on my Tri-Form Shade:

Alpha: Spiritual Partial Radial Revamp (Tier 3)

Interface: Reactive Partial Radial Interface (Tier 3)

Destiny: Clarion Partial Core Invocation (Tier 3)

    Judgement: Void (Tier 1)

    Lore: N/A

I'm not sure if I made the best decisions here, because Dechs hasn't told us yet. I'm pretty happy with how it's working out so far- It would be nice if I didn't feel like I HAD to take total status protection on Clarion and explore some other options, but stuns slow me down too much and I don't always have a break free sitting around so this definitely helps.

As for the build you posted, I really recommend trying to slot up for some Smashing/Lethal and Melee defense (since they seem to come together.) I just recently added that to my build and it made a HUGE improvement in survivability.

You don't need essence drain because you have dwarf drain and stygian circle. That 5% recharge can be picked up elsewhere if you really want it. .. If you take that out you can swap combat jumping for Maneuvers, replace essence drain with tactics, and swap stealth for vengeance. Maneuvers and Vengeance will both take LOTG procs and I think you'll get a lot more use out of that.

Now you have some extra slots to play with if you want to try for a little defense. Personally I think Gravity Shield is much more useful than Gravimetric Snare... I like to turn it on with super speed and inky aspect before I shoot out gravitic emanation and charge in for eclipse, just as an extra safety measure against tougher enemies.

I also slotted my Dwarf Drain for damage instead of healing with a regular heal IO tacked on the end... My stygian circle is up so often and I have a key bind set to drop out of dwarf and fire it so drain is more useful to me as an attack than anything else.

Anyways, I hope this helps and anyone can feel free to cut me down to size if I messed anything up.

I just didn't want to risk the alienation that Flux mentions below you- I play on the Protector server, a fairly small community and I'd like to avoid pissing anyone off lest I get black listed from trials. I agree 100% with Flux that it's extremely odd the way people are about it, but it is what it is I guess.

I'm going to try explaining myself ahead of time on the next trial I run so that people know I'm not intentionally being a jerk or trying to nerf their rewards- I need to buff off the groups before 10 scrappers flatten them.

    Quote:
Oh, there are still minions to be found. Every time a new shipment of weapons arrives, there's two fresh spawns with it. Run to one of the spawns and load up an eclipse and mire. Now, turn your tentacles around and go feed Marauder his teeth. That group of enemies will soon catch up to you and be smashed to tiny bits by you and your team. Now you have corpses to explode and reanimate.

    Repeat as needed.
Ah great, that's what I've been doing for the end of BAF with the reinforcements- running over, eclipse, double mire, summon fluffy, and try to run over to nightstar and co. for a quasar while there are still corpses around. I always find myself running around like a madman at the end of Lambda trying to fulfill my acid obligations.. I only just started running trials the other day so I'm still adjusting to all the surroundings.
  3. I finally upgraded my machine a bit so I could run the Incarnate Trials, and did so for quite a while yesterday. I definitely find BAF more fun than Lambda, I make sure to pay attention when the reinforcements come in for eclipse/mires/et cetera. The problem I'm having though is that the league leaders seem to all insist that nobody jumps to the next group, but I can never get sufficient buffs running in a pack because the groups are cleared so quickly that way...

Not to mention the end of Lambda when there no minions to be found and I'm making purple and orange inspirations like a madman just to stay alive. I feel so inferior blasting at this epic boss in Nova and firing off Judgement when it's up with no eclipse and no double mire, and unless I have two or three blue inspirations handy no quasar since stygian circle is useless without bodies.. Not to mention no unchain essence for the same reason.

This is the first time I've EVER felt useless as my Warshade, I plow through any other content I've done on x8 all by myself. Just in case it's relevant and I'm missing something that could help, here is my build. (Perma hasten, perma eclipse, ok s/l and melee defense)

    http://www.cohplanner.com/mids/downl...4CE01F78D5F850
  4. I ran the trials for the first time the other day repeatedly on my main (a Warshade) and did my best to follow instructions but I noticed that with waiting on the leader or team to start in on a group, there were never enough left for me to buff off... Kind of takes all the fun out of playing in the first place since it's a faux pas to skip to the next group for eclipse/mire. At least I got some new stuff though.
  5. I'm sure no sort of elaboration happened, in terms of what he felt were the issues that deserved most attention and what the priority was?

I would still love to see uninterrupted form shifts on my tri-form Shade, there's nothing worse than going into Dwarf or Nova and being hit with a stun while you're trying to change over. A higher damage cap and longer duration on Mires paired with inherent defense wouldn't be too bad, either.

Can anyone provide a link to Black Scorpion even mentioning that he planned to look at Khelds at some point in chat? I watched the U-Stream and didn't hear this at any point. Thanks!

I cannot TELL you how many leagues I've been on where the league leader/someone else has started calling people names and cussing them out because the person in question:

    -did not receive clear instructions
-has never run an Incarnate Trial before
-went afk for a minute to take care of their kids/pets

Be flexible. Expect people to mess up a little bit. We're all only human.

As for the photobombing: especially on teams that go zooming through, getting the pacnades/acids as fast as possible, some of us can't keep up. We either have no stealth, have insufficient stealth, and/or spend so much time running back and forth to the hospital we're not doing much good indoors.

In a situation like this, as long as all the pacnades/acids are still being gotten, who gives a crap if someone wants to be in the cutscene? As long as they don't spring Marauder on the rest of the group prematurely, it's not hurting you or anyone else. If nothing else, they'll get their butt kicked by Marauder and then you have extra Veng bait to buff off of before they hosp.

It's a game. Pull the stick out of your butt and have some fun with it. This is not SRS BSNS.

This is my favorite part of this thread. I'm waiting on some shiny new RAM to come in the mail in a few days before I can even attempt the trials, and I've got anxiety over being told I'm doing it wrong already with the intensity of the "thou shalt not's" pouring out of the sky. I hope I get a fair chance to acquaint myself with exactly how they work and what I need to do before anyone starts throwing lightning bolts at me or booting me from the league.

  9. Update- I finally bit the bullet and restored to before I had the launcher/COH installed. My sound is working OK, I just downloaded the launcher and it's running normally. Just waiting for COH to finish downloading (letting it sit overnight.)

Thanks for tolerating my thread sitting here and thanks to this community for existing in the first place while I mumble to myself aloud, whether I meant to or not.
  10. I just ran a system restore to set my computer back a few days because I accidentally uninstalled something that removed my sound (wasn't my sound driver- That's a separate mystery I'd rather not get into) and after running it, my NC Launcher won't work anymore.

Here's the error message I'm getting when I click my NC Launcher in order to run COH (the launcher won't open at all):

I tried restoring to a few different points to where my sound would work AND my NC Launcher would work but apparently I was being greedy, because after I was willing to sacrifice my sound just for COH I still could not get the launcher to work.

I uninstalled the Launcher, re-installed the Launcher, and got the same message every time regardless of the restore point I chose.

I've gotten various different messages, some of them ranging to: "could not find game folder" (I don't remember the exact wording.)

I even tried uninstalling the launcher AND uninstalling COH, but when I downloaded the launcher, it still gave me an error message of some sort. I guess NC Soft hates System Restore, or my life just sucks...

Anyways, I would love to download the city of heroes helper which I previously had installed to give you better details of my specs, but when I tried to download it I got this message:

As you can see, this is not my day (night) at all.
  11. Nice running it with you today, I think we made a nice Shade duo. I hope to team with you again soon!

Or you could, wouldn't recommend, not to install the low-profile bracket and just dangle the VGA port out the back on it's little ribbon cable. It's fugly and if you aren't careful as you could Conan (as in the Barbarian) the connector right off the card damaging the cable, header or even the card.

Note, the way the desktop GX270 is configured, it only has one low profile slot out the back so the cards with a second low profile bracket for the VGA port isn't any help.
Ok, thanks for all the help. It's much appreciated.

Onto the power source, if I picked up the one I posted earlier (http://www.cputopia.com/hp-400w-dell...lex-gx270.html) is not having it fit the ONLY issue, or would it not be compatible with the board? I've known people to leave their cases open anyways, and I could always get a new one at a later time as long as the power source was compatible.

Here's the service manual for the GX270, it covers all the models.
Knowing my luck, of course I have the desktop. Does needing a low profile card mean that I can't upgrade it at all?

As for the power supply not fitting in the case is it possible to pick up an external one?

As for video cards, I would shy away from the FX 5200. The FX series was nVidia's one major misstep in GPU development. I would have you look at GeForce 6200 AGP cards.
When I looked up the 6200, the results I got were DDR2- Is that ok?

Are you sure you can't stretch your budget to $400-500? You could get a whole new system that will crush the one you're going to upgrade. It's really not worth it. Totally understandable if you don't wanna, though.
It's not a question of not wanting to, it's a question of not being able to. Unless the college loan fairy comes and wipes my debt away I am stuck with what I have and a small budget for improvement.
  14. Ok-- I planned on upgrading to only 1.5-2 GB of RAM for now. I was just going to pick it up used on Amazon on the cheap. You said I could get a card for 40-130 and I'd be willing to spend somewhere in the middle of that, with the RAM hopefully totalling less than $100. I'm having trouble keeping up with your math I guess because unless a new power supply is going to be $300 I don't know how you arrived at 300-400 total.

Exactly what would I need to upgrade the power supply to in order to get a card that will properly support COH, even if on minimum settings? I'm not concerned about anything flashy right now, I figure if I dump like $150 dollars into this thing it should be in working order... I definitely wouldn't be able to get a whole new computer for that unless it 'fell off a truck.'

edit: a quick search brought these up:

    delloptiplex gx270 470 W Power Supply Replacement: $29.98

    http://www.cputopia.com/hp-400w-dell...lex-gx270.html

    SPARKLE SF8834DT256MB GeForce FX 5200 256M AGP TV-Out S-Video DVI Graphics Card: $34.99

    http://www.amazon.com/SPARKLE-SF8834...3255346&sr=8-5

I really can't see how to match these things up to see if they are compatible with one another, et cetera... But, if everything is in order it would cost about $70.00 after shipping.
  15. Great thanks. Here is all the info on my power supply-

    JMC/Datech DB9733-12HHBTL
    DC 12 V 2.3 A

As for the size of the case, from the side perspective it's 16 in x16 in and from the top perspective it's 5 in X 16 in.

    Thanks for all the help.

edit: I may have been looking at the wrong thing, I'm not really tech savvy at all and google just directed me to open up my case and look at the sticker. :S
  16. according to http://crucial.com

Your OptiPlex GX270 Series (Desktop and Mini-Tower) System Specs

    Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
    Total Memory Slots: 4
    Available Memory Slots: 2

I am curious about the 'memory is in pairs' comment... Does that mean I can't just buy 1 GB of the correct RAM on Amazon or something and add it on to the 510 MB already installed? Would I have to buy 2 sticks of the same size to upgrade?

  18. I just picked up a used Desktop computer to replace my Laptop. I know I need to upgrade the RAM, I was thinking of just adding an additional 1 GB. I don't need to run on Ultra Mode or even close, I just don't want 10 minute load screens anymore, and I want to be able to run the new Trials without being in lag land.

I also know I need a new graphics card, but I've read that a certain amount of power is required to support certain cards and I have no knowledge whatsoever as to what any of this means so I'll defer to the board. I would like to spend the minimal amount of money to get to a point where I can run decently (be on trials/TF's without viewing a slideshow of the game) and have short load screens even if it's on one of the lowest settings.

I also don't know if my processor is up to par though it seems to meet the system requirements.

At the behest of Jock Tamison (is Jock still playing???) I slotted up Choking Cloud, and it makes a noticeable difference. I 6 slotted it with Lockdown.
I currently have choking cloud on my lvl 20 rad/son defender, and I'm already hogging so much end with my anchor powers that I never even toggle on choking cloud anymore. Maybe if I uber-slotted for it, but I haven't noticed it being effective enough to be worth the risk. I'd rather use the power choice on part of the invisibility pool to slot an LOTG proc and have my more reliable powers be up more often.

Seriously though, sorry about that. I am the culprit. Just wanted to throw my belated sentiment in there.

Since the anchoring is providing a lot of the debuffs which is the keystone to Rad, knockback seems like it would be more of a hinderance than anything.

EM Pulse seems to be more trouble than it's worth. It's a bit overkill to shut off your own recovery with a very long recharge hold every time you encounter a "problem" minion or LT. Possibly better to switch to Screech or Shocking Bolt to mez them individually.
The fact that it's aoe is why I gave it higher priority than screech-- I've already picked up howl. The -regen is problematic but I was thinking cardiac Alpha would aid with that.

You might swap the slotting between Scream and Shout. Shout is nice for its accuracy bonus, but Scream is the single target DPS workhorse of the set.
This makes a lot of sense, thanks I plan to do this now.

1-slotting Power Sink was a good move, I think. You will probably only use Power Sink immediately after Dreadful Wail + Catch a Breath. Or if you're not nuking, only while AM is down and your end is running low. So it doesn't need any recharge slotting.
Much appreciated, although EF and RI seem to hog a bit of end at the lower levels it seemed like a form of end recovery aside from AM would be nice.

If you're going to 3-slot a ranged blast, consider Devastation instead of Maelstrom's Fury. Devastation's max health boost will help against alphas and lucky shots.
I grabbed Maelstrom's for the AoE defense which I am already not optimally slotted for as it is. Max health can be picked up through accolades and such.

Numina's proc may not be as useful as adding another slot to a single target blast. You seem to be fine on recovery, and you're going to be either Power Sinking or crashing your endurance on purpose (or both) every couple of minutes anyway. On the other hand, having only one single target damage power near the ED damage enhancement cap is asking for trouble on a solo defender (except maybe Kinetics). Even with enormous amounts of recharge buffing, I'd still want at least two high damage slotted ST blasts to keep up the DPS.
Another idea I plan on implimenting, thanks a lot for the help.

I don't want Choking Cloud. It's such an end hog and I already have enough powers that drop it. Since it's just a chance for hold it doesn't seem worth the cost to me.

Regarding Health, I'd actually say keep the Numina proc and take out the healing IO it is providing less than 1 hp/sec of regeneration which shouldn't make much of a difference, especially since you have a self heal anyway.
    This sounds great! Thanks.
  22. edit: I was having some technical issues, but here is another version of the build with Dreadful Wail replacing Screech. I got better numbers with the second Obliteration set but had to sacrifice slots in Power Sink and Charged Armor. I was able to add a Numina proc to health though, which should be useful.

  23. I will be using this for almost exclusively solo play. I tried to build primarily for melee/smashing/lethal defense since my play style is to stand right next to my anchors to keep groups in the debuff radius. I also tried for some AOE defense.

I took the invisibility pool instead of leaping since stealth offers +def and it let me fit in my 5 lotg procs. I originally put 1 proc in combat jumping and took super jump so I could grab acrobatics but it left my recharge pretty low.

I went with the Electricity Epic Pool for the smashing/lethal defense and endurance recovery. The high damage attack is a nice perk too for soloing... But anyways, feedback/advice/full-on corrections are all welcome and appreciated.

  24. I was planning on going with electricity mastery and taking charged armor which is +res to smashing, lethal, and energy. Another thing I like about it is power sink as a means to gain end since AM doesn't always sustain toggles optimally. Thunderstrike is a good perk, too.

Would it be possible to 'layer' the protection in this scenario as Gavin suggested earlier in the thread? I would prefer to be able to survive just as well against most enemy groups. Another thing-- I'm not sure if it would make sense to plan ahead of time for incarnate powers, since I don't want to be gimped while I work towards them. This is sort of off-topic since it's more relevant to general strategy than game mechanics but it will ultimately effect what set bonuses I aim for, ie: Planning around Destiny and Alpha buffs.
  25. Wow thanks everyone for the great replies!

    Quote:
Don't look at the set bonus listing for your total details. There's another window called "View Totals", the button is near the powerset list, near "X slots left". There's two tabs there with all your details.
This I was not aware of, thanks for bring it to my attention. I do use the combat attributes to monitor several things already but that won't help me when making a build ahead of time.

    Quote:
Defense uses the highest applicable number---if you have 5% smashing defense, 25% fire defense, and 2% AoE defense and are hit by a Fireball (Fire, Smashing, AoE), it uses the 25% fire defense.
Well that's sort of annoying... I feel like the bonuses should stack.

    Quote:
Mids does not always have toggle powers on so I suspect when you looked at the builds in question certain key powers were turned off. It's hard to say for sure without knowing the build in question however.
That makes sense...It was something I noticed on a pretty fair amount of builds I've looked at, nothing particular comes to mind but the poster before you pointed me in the right direction in mids. I'll be looking at the totals instead of the set bonuses from now on.

    Quote:
    1. Softcap all positional defenses (popular with Super Reflexes and Shield Defense)
    2. Softcap all typed defenses except for psi (popular with Stone Armor and Invulnerability)
    3. Softcap one positional defense, usually ranged (popular with ranged characters lacking defense powers)
    4. Softcap two typed defenses, generally smashing and lethal (popular with resistance based armor sets and ranged characters who have a S/L defense epic power)
The build I'm working on specifically right now is one for a Rad/Son defender to be used almost strictly for soloing. Most people's builds seem to favor ranged defense, but being solo I need to keep the groups close to the anchor and the best way to do that is to stand right next to him... So, I'm assuming I should build for melee defense? I tried building for AOE AND Melee on top of the recharge bonuses I needed for perma hasten>AM and the set bonus numbers were not where I wanted them. Then again, at the time I was under the impression that in order to be soft capped I needed to get the set bonuses to 45%, so I'm glad I posted this.
