I don't think we're as much of a niche as people like to think.

Seconded. Before WoW, the benchmark for MMP success was 100,000 subscribers. Admittedly, WoW is a HUGE hit. Gigantic. Perhaps biggest in the PC industry ever, but that shouldn't diminish CoH's place as one of the largest North American MMP's. We're well over that 100,000 mark.
There's no way that NCSoft and Cryptic are going to do anything but continue to give CoH everything we can. I'm still playing, designing and playtesting!
[/ QUOTE ]
MMP? Must be a finger snaffu. >.>
Just out of curiousity States, do you play on the Live servers, or do you only play on the internal ones? I'm guessing both, but you never know. Hmmm... I wonder if I have ever bumped into you on live...You probably don't play on Freedom though, it's a mad house, and odds are not great regardless, but still... >.>

No, hours upon hours of playing EverQuest and PlanetSide did that. But then, I don't design the game, so you are safe!

Personally, I'm going to stand back and watch MUO for a while before I make any choices on it. I'm pretty wary of online games that have a big name attached to it. World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI are good examples.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm hopeful that Cryptic will give preferential beta access to CoH players. It seems likely, so perhaps we'll all get to see what its like in MUO Beta.
[/ QUOTE ]
That would be freaking sweeeeeeeeeeet. I am so hopeful and excited about MUO. The devs have shown us how much they have learned with things like the new Faultline and how powers are slowly being better balanced.
I don't get all the fear-mongering that CoX is doomed. That's not liable to happen. Sure, I doubt there will be as many of us, but doomed? Pfff. Then Ultima Online, Everquest 1, and all those other ancient games never should have lasted as long as they did/have/are. Actually, it seems once an MMO has really established itself and settled in, like CoX has, it just doesn't one day on the way to the proverbial fridge have a heart attack and die.
=. .=
[/ QUOTE ]
Its not so much that CoH is doomed. I don't think that, and I don't think its a useful discussion really. That said, the article gives a heavy impression that Cryptic's energy and innovation will be directed primarily to the new game. And given the recent history of six month waits between updates to CoX, it makes me wonder how much respect Cryptic is giving the the game that made them what they are today.

I thought it had more to do with the 40 hour work week and 1 1/2 hour lunchtime Warhammer sessions. Lazy nerds need to get to work!!
[/ QUOTE ]
*sigh* I wish I could have a 1 1/2 hour lunch break to play Warhammer. But I have no Warhammer stuff, so I'll just have to be content with cruising the boards and working on my DnD campeign. >.>

Yes, I'm still around...
NCSoft (the publisher) and Cryptic Studios (the developer) are still firmly behind City of Heroes. It isn't going anywhere. NCSoft continues to fund a fantastic live team with lots of great stuff to come.
Yes, Cryptic is working on other products. These are different games with different financial backers. We plan on supporting multiple games in the same way that other great developers do.

The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes...

*sigh* =0_o=
I'm sure there will be plenty of cool things coming out for CoH/CoV in the next few updates, but I just wonder about all the cool things we heard about from the early pre-Beta days....
[/ QUOTE ]
Same here Pep. But that just makes mew go, "Yaaaaaa! Must play Marvel!"
=^ ^=
[/ QUOTE ]
And the problem with that is, unless this has changed, the last mention of it said that it would be Xbox 360 or Vista only. Which pretty much means I won't be going for it at all.
[/ QUOTE ]
Pfff, by 2008 you'd have to upgrade regardless to run the game and Vista will be standard.I kid, I kid! Please, don't hurt me. >.<

Yup, the Fire/Fire was his brute. He used a Stone/SS Tank it looks like. I just quickly looked up his old tank thread.

Just curious, can it be done hero side with anything but a Scrapper? Everything else would seem to be either too squishy or too low damage output.

Ultimus has defeated AVs on his tank. Fire/Fire I believe, though that could be his brute I am thinking about. -

My mace tanker always juggles unless I'm running while taunting.
The only oddity I've noticed is that if I'm flying into a group while hitting whirling mace, instead of the normal animation, my tank puts his feet together, toes down, head up, arms down at his sides, but wrapped around him a bit and he starts spinning like a tornado with the mace sticking out of the side.

New power......Whirlwind Mace!

Gah! Now I want a macer just to see this new animation!!

I don't think they will, merely that the system is capable of anything but that not everything will be used.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yup yup. The way i read it the system is more than cappable of creating ANY reward, but that does not mean it WILL. Capability =/= what it does do. A high end sports car is capable of going hundreds of miles an hour, but you don't actually drive it that speed unless under the most special cercumstances, like being on a closed race track. I hope that made sense.
>.> -
Meh, not much there anyways. Less waffle, more substance! Give us teh juicey low down. Hearing that Posi didn't like his armour's look so he was happy to up-grade is okay, but it isn't earth shattering. Not intended as a knock, just advice that some more concrete information would be apreciated. On the other hand, given the past, I can understand why they wouldn't want to say to much to us.

I look at it this way, my kids are growing up in a gamer's home, bar none. They both like playing games now as well and their usual standard fare is something like GH2 or Pokemon or any of my superhero games. When I play something that's rated T+, I usually play alone and out of their sight in another room.
I remember playing God of War late one night when it came out. I was in the middle of royally tearing a new one for my foes when I heard an "Eeeeeewwww!!" from behind me. I turned around to see my then 12 year old daughter's face, eyes wide and jaw dropped in shock. She looked at me, looked back at the screen, wrinkled her nose and jetted back to her room. Needless to say, I have no worries of her shooting up a Hardees one day.
[/ QUOTE ]
There must have been something wrong with me then. At twelve I would have asked how the game was played and lept onto the couch beside you to get some quality time with my dad. >.< Though at twelve I think I was just starting to graduate from Mario to Civilization and Master of Orion. >.> The first 'graphic' game I played was Duke Nukem 3d, none of the others caught my attention, not even Doom. -

[ QUOTE ]
I'm extremely disappointed that an image of Statesman would be used in such a way. I know that we designed City of Heroes to appeal to "children of all ages." My proudest accomplishment with the game is that many parents (including my brother) play with their children...sharing, I hope, the same joy for the comic book world that I've had ever since I was 8. I cannot express the shock that I felt seeing that a character created by Cryptic would be used in the same sentence as Columbine.
[/ QUOTE ]
And therein lies their tactics. These people are trying to associate any video game iconography with real life violence. They're the heirs to previous such demagogues - the anti-D&D crowd, the religious zealots who swore blind that all rock music serves Satan, the people who believed that comics seduced the innocent, etc. They're only interested in stirring up fear for their own gain.
Of course, as any good geek knows, fear is the path to the Dark Side, and I'd like to think most of the populace knows better than to buy into this nonsense. Last I heard, Jack Thompson was close to being disbarred for his antics.
[/ QUOTE ]
I can't understand why he hasn't been disbarred yet, just for clogging the arteries of the system with his verbal waffle. Then again, we are talking about a system where a woman can sue McDonalds for damages when she spills a cup of coffee in her lap while driving her car, and win! -
[ QUOTE ]
<QR>
On the topic I just saw on the news a thing about kids stealing video games. They interviewed a six year old asking him the games that he was going to buy. He said Halo and doom. Im really wondering where these kids parents are.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, they really need an upgrade! Poor little tots,Having to suffer with such oldies as Halo and Doom. At the very least the ankle biters should have Half-Life 2, or my personal favourite, Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodines.
Nothing like some good wholesome vampy action to set kids right!
How are they supposed to grow up to be well adjusted teens and adults if they can not connect with popular culture? They are going to be the outcasts in school at this rate, and we all know where that leads. That's right; MIT, pocket protectors and a guest spot on Wierd Al's 'White and Nerdy'!Come on parents, get your acts together! All your kids need is a Wii, X-Box 360, and PS3 with a HD TV. =~.o= Failing that, a 2,500$ computer, they are about the same price overall. <.<

It's pretty sick they did this. Sorry the trailer should have been showing horrible parenting, resulting in kids doing bad things.
[/ QUOTE ]
I swear to God, if I had the means, this is exactly what I'd film and post on YouTube.
[/ QUOTE ]
It's true; There's alot of people out there so so willing to blame anyone but themselves; but when you ask them "Well, what do you do when your kids do act up?" and they respond "I beat the [censored] out of them with a belt" - yeah... not teaching ANYTHING about violence being a problem solving tool. (Note - there is a difference from a normal spanking and the kind of thing I speak of)
Also - around here at least, I've seen people literally *throw* their children when they behave poorly in the store. How exactly is that going to teach them anything positive? Pain hurts?
But most of all, the thing that breeds violence in my opinion - is hopelessness. I don't mean 'emo' hopeless, where you just feign hopelessness because you want people to feel sorry for you - I mean genuine honest to goodness 'there is nothing in the world for me' hopeless. It exists, and is far too common. The way our world works breeds it - as it is far too easy to get stuck in a cycle of not having enough money to even keep the bills paid and food on the table while still working your [censored] off.
Oh, and then people call you "pathetic" or "lazy" because you can't afford food despite working.
How often have we heard about people walking into a school or office and shooting the crap out of everything, then themselves? Would a person who really has a reason to live do that? Maybe a scant few who are genuinely crazy. But I don't think people who have a reason to believe life can get better will do anything so insane.
Videogames are so far from the source of the problem it's like looking for penguins in Illinois.
