I'm certain there have been instances where I'm doing my job and people would apply that term or terms with a similar sentiment to me (I've actually been referred to as "Hitler" for refusing to haggle over rates). However, most of those people were - or likely were - trying to get away with something/get something for nothing. I've found that the sentimentality that is evoked in order to manipulate me in such an instance is only worth as much as the trust/respect that the person evoking it has earned - which, in most cases, is nil or less.
Were I in a position responsible for enforcing rules governing public health and safety, sentimentality would have even less place. -

I remember when they closed the Dots in the mall and I was put off playing Pac-Man for months afterward.

Quote:If it's not a fabrication, then I would take solace in the fact that such a person maintains a largely more constructive than destructive position in society.I'm not sure how much of this is you being real and how much is trolling for reaction, but either way it is depressing as ****.
If it is a fabrication, then it's just another mote of dust on the digital wind and not worth wasting any real emotion on. -
Quote:Hence the qualifier "even in states where a case might be made".nah, for that, there would have to be an actus reus (guilty act) aka me doing a crime that put a person in harms way or ending up with someone injured. Which could have been possible if there was a duty to rescue law
Of course, the fact that it was allegedly not illegal doesn't change that it is debatably unethical - the latter, of course, being more important to some than to others. -

In some few states, I believe you are legally required to at least notify the authorities/call 911 in such a situation.

Quote:Everyone makes mistakes. But there comes a point when it can no longer be considered a "mistake" and moves into the realm of "willful ignorance". I largely gave up on correcting people, as I've discovered that the sorts of people who actively choose to do things the wrong way generally cannot be dissuaded from such behaviour.Glad I'm not the only one who see the annoyance in the crazy habit of people waking around like they are the gods of spelling going around correcting people like they dont make spelling mistakes.
On a completely unrelated note, I find myself wondering when I last checked the Darwin Awards... -
You can't think of the big picture without thinking about all the little elements that make up the big picture. If you let those elements disappear one-by-one because they seem unimportant, eventually that big picture is going to be rather empty.

Quote:While I've certainly felt as if I were being actively antagonized by you from time to time, I wouldn't say that I've ever come to "dislike" you. If anything, I would say you have increased my capacity for temperance.Ya know in all honesty I think it's the people that "dislike" me that I'm going to miss the most. They've provided me with years of laughter both in the threads and via hostile PM's they've sent me.
Heck, I'd be hard pressed to come up with anyone around here who I wholly dislike. The two that have come closest were Golden Girl and that person that used to post around here particularly around the time of Champions' release who had a large-eyed puppy for an avatar. There was a time when I might've thought those two were one and the same, actually. -
"Hope" isn't my cup of tea, but I wouldn't say that it's delusional to not give up a fight even if it's unlikely that you'll win. Nor does it necessarily have to lead to bitterness upon failure.

Quote:That sounds vaguely like a polite, businesslike threat to me. Nah, it's probably nothing...
We wanted to let you know that your voices have been heard and your concerns have been taken into serious consideration. We appreciate the overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages in the emails, notes, and packages you've sent in support of the game. It has not been an easy decision for us to close Paragon StudiosĀ® and prepare to shut down City of Heroes. We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. City of Heroes has a special place in all of our hearts, and we want to ensure its reputation and the memories we share for the game end on a high note. -
Quote:I wish *I* could get paid for simply voicing a pragmatic outlook...I love it that NCSoft feels the need to have plants within the community to try and demoralize us. Love all the negative "Be Realistic" posts from the corporate shills.
It seems to me that a real "plant" would be less overt, though. I'd imagine that the best way to be effective would be to actually join the efforts to save CoH and passive-aggressively destabilize them from within. -
The Television. I've been sleeping with Television surrogates for years.

Yes, that's pretty much what I did.
Actually, it was something I should've done a long time ago. I had numerous characters I'd made (and not really played) on servers back when I ran out of space on Virtue that were just sitting around collecting virtual dust. And to be honest, there were several characters on Virtue that I'd never seriously play (or play again) but which I was alt-hoarding.

Quote:I'm not really a fan of the Beatles, but the 'number nine' thing made me think of a Simpsons reference that I'm pretty sure was parodying the Beatles, at least in part. The number of folks who fail to recognize a Beatles song leaves me with a massive sad...
And I'm not a fan of rap, though I recognized the 'definition' thanks to the Chap-Hop stylings of Mister B and his History of Rap. -
I tried AION sometime this year. Got killed by something standing a few feet away from where I materialized in the starting area while I was trying to get a handle on the controls. Deleted the game and never looked back.

The one time I've logged in since the announcement was to delete nearly all of my characters. There were a few I just couldn't press the button on, though. I'll probably get those right at the end.

Do I hate it? I can't say for certain, because I've never seen it. I'm not a big fan of Will Ferrell, but he's occasionally made me laugh. It could be that Anchorman would surprise me.
There are a number of comedians that I *do* like: George Carlin, Sam Kinison, Lewis Black, Don Rickles, and Stephen Colbert to name a few. Hrm, there seems to be a disproportionate number of comedians there that direct comedic anger at the antics of stupid people - what an odd coincidence. -
The only character I managed to make significant Incarnate progress with was my level 50 Electric/Energy Blaster. Her name was "Leapin' Liz" and she was inspired by a picture for a D&D Monster File of Shocker Lizards.
However, her damage often seemed a bit low to me, and she wasn't built to sap.
I also had a small round robot that was Electric Control/FF. His name was AARD-VARC, which was an acronym for something I no longer recall. He was going to be all about sapping from relative safety.
Sapping rarely seemed to be useful, though. Maybe if it included an Endurance Anti-Discount debuff to make powers cost more it might've been a bit better? -

Quote:The Foxbat mission where you go into the news station to save the anchorman? I was told by someone else that it was a reference to the Anchorman movie, but I wouldn't've known it otherwise since I managed to avoid that movie. I always enjoy doing that mission, though. It was the sort of pop culture in-joke storyline I usually like and you really hate, but it was so poorly handed that even I couldn't stand it. Basically a ripoff of the movie Anchorman, but so heavy handed, with character dialog that beat you over the head yelling "DO YOU GET IT!!! DO YOU GET OUR FUNNY JOKE YET!!!"
